The Valley of Vision by an Unknown Puritan.

This is a certified Christian classic, a collection of Puritan prayers, that for reasons I cannot fathom, has not been digitized yet by Project Gutenberg or CCEL or anyone else. As it's in public domain you'd think it would be a no-brainer.

It would make a great devotional for Logos, and a resource I believe preachers would like to have for sermon prep.

This has been on my list for a while. As a devotional, it would make an excellent addition to Logos. But based on my research, I don't think it's in the public domain. I think all of the pieces are in the public domain, but as far as I can tell the compilation of those pieces is under copyright (© 1975 by The Banner of Truth Trust). I'm not 100% sure how copyright law applies to compilations of public domain texts, and I'm not sure if Arthur Bennett did any editing of the English texts. But Banner of Truth is clearly claiming that they hold the copyrights to the work in its present form. If anyone has any solid evidence that demonstrates that the book itself is in the public domain, please let me know. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until we can license it from the publisher.

In this case, I think this calls for you to engage in some aggressive and persistent work with Banner of Truth trust to get all of their books into the digital domain on Logos!

For what it's worth, I've been in contact with BoT off and on for the last several years about doing a project of creating an updated (ESV vs. KJV, if you will) version of VoV. So far, though there seems to be much interest by some in the organization, the higher-ups, feel that "it ain't broke, so why fix it". Agree! BOT should definitely work something out with Logos to make Valley of Vision and their other excellent resources available for more people to utilize, and to make more of an impact in the world with the wisdom the puritans had. IMO digital works are far better for study purposes, and they will have more of a lasting impact on a future generation that will be going more and more digital.

Ever...?..

...I guess the wait is still going on for Banner of Truth to get on board. The physical vs electronic format seems like a weird position for BOT to take such a firm stance on. Is there any downside for BOT in publishing their works electronically? Or is it just a strange dislike for the "NEW" electronic format?

Does anyone have the wherewithal to build a PB of this? If all the texts are public domain, and just the arrangement of them is under copywrite, it seems that someone could reproduce a doc containing them all legally...

I don't think all the texts are public domain. We know that Arthur Bennett wrote the very first poem. As for the others, I've not been able to attribute any of the other poems to other writers. I don't think it's a simple arrangement. As far as I can tell, he mixed and matched different authors, reworded, and added his own stuff. In other words, I think it is essentially an original work, as far as copyrights go.

I could be wrong, though, and I wonder if any of you with huge Logos libraries have been able to attribute any of the poems to their original sources.

I just read that blog post and it is what brought me over to Logos Forums. Justin's post is very helpful, and clarifies why V of V is NOT public domain.

I posted a comment in the blog comments area about how doing the research on Bennett's sources would be so much easier using Logos because many of his source works are already available in Logos. If V of V were made available, and the Cited By tool could be manipulated properly, many of Bennett's secrets could be seen, I think.

In any case, add my vote for bringing V of V into Logos as a resource.

Well, they have it in electronic format on their website, but they apparently have thus far refused to license it to anyone else to publish an e-book of it. Such a pity.
