Determing distances between places

I am having trouble determining distances between various places using logos maps. One tip I had was to put the mouse on one place and press the Ctrrl key and the distance will be shown. This has not worked for me. Can someone explain how to find the distances between one place and another? Thanks in advance. Steve

Hold down the Ctrl key and click on point A; while still holding the Ctrl key, drag the mouse to point B, and you'll see the distance from A to B.

It only works on certain types of maps, unfortunately. It won't work on maps that have come from one of your books, only Logos' own maps. If the book the map is from is listed under it's heading, it won't work, and you'll have to choose a different map (they're usually listed on the left of the choices).

It only works on certain types of maps, unfortunately. It won't work on maps that have come from one of your books, only Logos' own maps.

Also, it doesn't work on the old Logos maps -- the brighter primary-colored lower resolution ones, like this:

It only works on the new ones designed especially for L4 -- the pastel-colored higher resolutions ones, like this:

If you're not sure which kind you're looking at, check to see whether there are Google Maps lat./long. coordinates in the upper right corner in Biblical Places -- that will be an indication you're dealing with one of the new L4 maps:

And perhaps it goes without saying that this feature only works in Biblical Places, not on maps you find as images within other resources, as Mark explained.

You also can't zoom in on the old style maps but the new maps are zoomable, and as you zoom in you'll see more detail. This is a close-up of that last one I showed, after I've clicked on "Actual Size":

You can use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in/out or if you don't have one of those, you can use Ctrl+Minus and Ctrl-Plus (the =/+ key if you don't have a numeric keypad, without holding down Shift, as I've finally learned!)

I noticed that mine worked differently...

I CTRL+Click in place #1 and WHILE HOLDING DOWN CTRL+CLICK drag to place #2...

Letting up on the left click didn't work.

Hi Steve,I made a quick video demonstrating the feature and highlighted the point that you need to hold down CTRL key first before pressing you mouse button. If you press your mouse button first, you are invoking the function to move the map about on your screen. I also showed in the video how you can tell which maps will allow you to measure distances and which ones don't.

Hope this clarifies things more you. I found it a little bit tricky when first learning to use this feature.

Biblical Places will show all your maps, including your Logos Deluxe Maps. If your map looks like the one Rosie showed, CTRL+CLICK will work. If it doesn't look like that, it won't.

Very odd.

Just out of curiosity, is the other "mouse" action for maps working on your laptop? Can you click (without the Ctrl key) and drag to scroll around in the map when it is zoomed in? Does Ctrl+Click work in other capacities (i.e., can you select multiple non-adjacent books in your Library by Ctrl+Clicking on them one at a time)? If the feature works on your desktop with a mouse, can you try plugging the mouse into your laptop and see if it works with an actual mouse as opposed to the touchpad?

EDIT: Also, out of a loss of other ideas, I'd also suggest you try updating to the latest version of the driver for your touchpad, and see if that helps.

If I do it on a city or place name it gives my the popup to choose Biblical Places or one of my dictionaries. If I control + click (or right click) on a "blank" area of the map, it gives me the standard "Copy/Save As/Print/Send to KeyNote" options.

And... I am using the proper maps with coordinates in upper right, etc.

Have you tried Command+Click? That is the Mac equivalent to Windows Ctrl+Click. Don't use the Mac Contrlol key which means something different. It never occurred to me that the original poster might have been using a Mac too, since this was posted in the main Logos 4 forum. So if that's the case, then try Cmd-Click insteadl of Ctrl-Click.

An expert Mac user may be able to correct me on this point, but I don't believe that there's a way to use the Ctrl+Click distance measuring if you're running the Windows version of Logos 4 under Parallels/Fusion on Mac (because of the way the emulator treats the Ctrl key).

You would have to either use Boot Camp (so that you're running Windows directly on the hardware), or use the Mac version of Logos 4 (assuming it supports a similar shortcut key in Biblical Places).

I sure thought I had tried the command/click combination. In fact, I know I tried many combinations of modifier keys + click. But obviously, somehow I didn't.

Command + click works. And now I am in geographical bliss...

Observation: The new ambidextrous Logos is a wonderful blessing. But sometimes even blessings generate new challenges. The issue we have now is that we must be "bi-lingual" in English. When someone switches from English to Spanish, that's easy for me. But with the current (unpredictable) mix of Mac-speak and Windows-speak in Logos tutorials etc., it sometimes get's confusing! (Or at least, I get confused. Maybe it's just me!)

BTW: Steven, if command/click doesn't work for you then something else very weird is going on.

If you haven't zoomed in on the map, you can get this to work using Fusion by simultaneously holding down the Control AND the Command keys, then clicking and dragging.

If you have zoomed in, you can get the distance measuring to work in Fusion by simultaneously holding down the Control AND the Option AND the Command keys, then clicking and dragging.

After that, you have to stand on your head and do it upside down! [:P]

Hello all,

I ran into this with Logos 9 and the new maps. If the setting for the map is "TERRAIN" is will not work... You must set the map to "FLAT" and the measure function works great.
