Printing out of Logos for Mac

Anybody know how to print something? I created a Note and can't seem to find a print command anywhere. In fact, since I couldn't find one to print a note I decided to try to print something else. Seems no matter what I have active, there is no print option anywhere. I will say I do not have a printer hooked up, but I should still be able to print to PDF. At least I would think so.

Logos 4 Mac doesn't have printing support yet. The Windows version has printing in beta testing and is expected to be released soon with Mac printing surely to follow soon.

While waiting for Logos 4 Mac printing functionality to be added/exposed, couple viable workarounds:

* Screen capture to clipboard - Preview: New from Clipboard - annotate as desired - can save file as well as print.

* Copy and paste works - Pages, OpenOffice, NeoOffice, Microsoft Office, and Mellel can save and print (to name several word processors available for Mac OS X - couple free). Printing is becoming less and less of a must-have feature in 1.0 products (take, for example, the iPad: printing support won't be available until November). While we understand that a certain subset of our users care very deeply about this feature, and we do intend to support it, we did not feel that it was necessary to delay releasing the product to all of the users who don't want or need it in order to implement the feature.

It's been listed on this page ever since the release of Logos 4 for Windows last November. If you did not find that page while you were making your purchasing decision and you feel that you have not gotten a product worth the money you spent on it, I'm sure that customer service would be happy to provide you with a refund.

Evidently without any trouble and, thus far, most users are fine with it. I'm among those that look forward to printing coming to the Mac, but nonetheless I've done fine without it. It is coming, it's available on the PC, it will make it to the Mac before too long.

In what way has it not been made public? It hasn't exactly been hidden. No software is going to advertise itself with a list of what the software can't do, but anyone looking at the forums or around the web shouldn't have any trouble learning what Logos can and cannot do. Discussions about printing are frequent enough that it shouldn't take long to accidentally learn that printing isn't currently possible. And if one goes looking specifically for pros/cons, info about printing should be easy to find.

Currently, the level of printing most people are talking about is only available in the latest Windows beta version, not in their stable release.

I have considered it. But, I don't really feel like going through the hassel. Plus, I do like the software. I've also already spent considerable amount of time learning Logos. Plus, it is a Mac version! Don't think BIble Works has a Mac version. I have accordance, but don't like it much. So, I'll have to just wait.

As I've already indicated, if you're that unsatisfied with your purchase, customer service will be happy to provide you with a refund, an offer that I have yet to receive from a used car dealer.

Also, as already stated, Printing is available in the beta for the next version of Logos 4 for Windows, and we will be adding it on the Macintosh at some point in the future, as well. The vast majority of our users have not been unduly hobbled by our lack of printing support, given the wide range of word processing software available and the ability to copy and paste from our app into other programs. However, if this is not a sufficient solution for you, by all means, please call customer service in the morning and request a refund.

Nope. I don't think anything I said implied that I (or Logos) expect anyone to read our forums before they buy our product. I was merely pointing out to Chris that we do, in fact, openly declare lists of features we haven't implemented.

I think the most useful response in this thread so far is David's response above, where he says:

So, that's really what it comes down to. At some point, we needed to ship. The list of things that we could ship was massive, particularly compared to our previous Mac version (Libronix 1.2.2). Given the fact that the stable release of our Windows version also doesn't print, it would've been silly for us to delay release until printing was enabled.

I think it's also important to make sure that we understand we're not talking about whether or not our product should ever print. We're talking about whether or not we should've delayed releasing it until printing was implemented. Nobody has yet, that I'm aware of, asserted that we should not implement printing.

I somewhat understand the surprise although probably not the level of frustration you seem to be feeling. One additional thing to keep in mind is that the Kindle apps don't print (at least not that I am aware of) and I think some of that is intentional. There is going to be some level of concern a publisher would have when printing something that has DRM protected, copyrighted material.Not may people would print a book to paper and pass out copies of it but it would be very easy to print a book to PDF and put it on the internet. I am not sure if this entered into the discussion at Logos but I throw the point out to demonstrate that the situation is not quite as simple as it might seem on the surface and not really that comparable to Word.

I have played with printing on the Windows side (only a tiny bit though) and I think the entire issue will be moot soon.

I look at notes files and think what would I do with this if I printed it?

If I want to have an extract from a resource why would I want it sitting on a piece of paper on its own - I would only ever use it in context - ie Copy and Paste are the tools for the job.

Jesse's question and mine, which somebody might be gracious enough to answer, is not just thrown to the wind!

As the facility is not yet developed, knowing what is expected by users will help the programers meet aspirations.

If we are missing some great opportunity to get better use from the program that printing would give us then it would be a kindness to explain what this is.

Surely we are not asking for a print facility just because 'programs print' –there must be some practical use for the end result.?

Perhaps somebody wants to print out their library?

I have been using Logos for 8 months now. The lack of printing has never been an issue for me. The only time I have printed is to meditate on a passage and annotate my observations. I do this by copy and paste into pages.

A couple of the areas where printing within Logos is more beneficial than cut and paste is that:

a) Time - pastors purchase Logos to save time (a huge selling point for Logos); therefore, if I don't have to cut and paste, a pastor saves time

b) Correct Greek and Hebrew font rendition vs. having to use some word processing software to correctly depict foreign language letters

I am sure there are more, but these are key.

I was certainly surprised printing was not included in the Logos 4 package; however, I have had to live with it by default, not because I want to.

There is a huge push in the environmental conservation and other secular movements to go "paperless." However, this is simply unrealistic since the paramount purpose of God's Word is to get it communicated to the lost, as well as believers. Logos helps to do this definitely, but it is not the sole source of this communication and should make every effort to provide as many avenues of communicating the word, most of all the printed word, to its customers who are those trained, training or seeking to understand and communicate God's Word better to the lost and growing believers.

Actually the printing facility is fully developed on the recent Logos for Windows release. Macs will get it in the next release (4.1).

Printing and Exporting are a combined facility, and it works well.

From what I understand from the paragraph above you are making the case for the contents of the Bible to be promulgated by written explanation in printed format?

To do this effectively it needs to be well presented, attractive to the eye and draw the reader into wanting to continue beyond the first couple of words of text. All this takes time, planning, and a capable word processing suite.

Any 'busy pastor' who hasn't got time to cut and paste hasn't time to do the job at all.

Even in the notes for sermons that I prepare the number of cuts and pastes are legion!

Logos' print engine may indeed do a good job at rendering the ancient languages but what you see on the screen is not necessarily what you get on the printed page. Word processors are the tools for the job. Logos' print engine will be rendering the letters in a similar way to that which a word processor does otherwise you will get no control over font size.

That said, unless the print facility allows you to top and or tail your Hebrew extract it will sit lonely and unexplained on the page.

All rather pointless it seems to me.

On the other hand if the Developers are sitting there devising a fully fledged word processing panel to sit in the Logos Box then I will be very disappointed - after all how fast will it scroll?

Okay, Logos 4/Mac doesn't have the ability to print yet, and that is what it is.

However, I believe it's a bit patronizing to completely downplay the need or desire to print natively from an application. The ability to copy text and paste it into a word processor is a good and reasonable interim solution while we wait for the feature to be added, but obviously, it's not ideal.

Personally, I print in the traditional means very rarely these days, regardless of the application. But I tell you what I do instead--I create PDF files. Often it's to send an article or a passage to my iPad (keep in mind that not every Logos title is available for iOS yet), or maybe I simply want to file an isolated selection of text separately. Maybe I need to share (within reasonable fair use limits, mind you) an article with someone else.

The Mac OS has had a PDF layer built into the OS and accessible through the system print dialogue box since the OS X beta in 2000. This may not be normal practice yet for recent switchers from Windows, but for those of us who've been using the Mac for a while, PDF creation is regular practice. If I send a document to a class or to a committee at church, I never send it in something like a .doc file, even though I would assume that anyone would be able to open it if I did. Rather, I send a PDF. Again, this is standard practice for Mac users for the past decade.

Thus, while it's not the most pressing issue around, and I'm thankful there are reasonable workarounds for it, I do find it odd that Logos/Mac cannot perform this very basic function that's built into the OS itself. Printing and PDF creation are features of OS X; I'm no programmer, but it seems to me they shouldn't be features that have to be added to an application running in OS X.

but neither of the "answers" have really said WHAT you print and why it is more useful to do it straight out of L4. i guess i just dont see the point of extracting text from L4 to put into pdf just for the sake of having it by itself??? doesnt that defeat the purpose of all of the amazing features and usefulness of L4? and what would you be printing from L4 that any church committee would need?

the time factor - like maybe 10 seconds saved?

Just a few things to consider that can be involved: finding out what printers are connected to the system, discovering what paper sizes are available, determining whether any attached printer supports fun stuff like double-sided printing, ensuring that margins are large enough that nothing gets clipped as a result of the physical limitations of the printer, paginating content so that lines of text aren't clipped near page boundaries, ensuring that images and other visual elements are printed at an acceptable DPI (what looks good on the screen will look blurry on the page)…

So Cocoa does give you something in the way of printing, but it's far from the drop-in feature that you make it out to be.

I don't doubt that, David, and my real point was with the patronizing attitude that some of the users (not directed at developers) have had toward those who want to print.

Really, I shouldn't have even included that last paragraph. I have no doubt that printing is a complex issue, but regardless, Logos/Mac is the only program (from my immediate recollection) on my computer that involves text and graphics that does not print. That's odd to me, regardless, but I agree that you made the right decision to release the software even though this functionality wasn't ready as many will never directly use it anyway.

This is exactly the kind of patronizing attitude I was talking about. The fact that you don't get it and the fact that you don't need to print and the fact that you're happy copying and pasting doesn't diminish the value of printing (or creating PDFs) for other users.

You sit in judgment of my desire to print and scratch your head as to why I'd want to create PDFs of articles, but you know nothing of my workflow.

Maybe I've read a good article on stewardship and want to send just that to the Finance Committee at church.

For my dissertation, I keep a virtual file cabinet of articles in DEVONthink Pro. In the old days, the fact that I had an entire journal in print and ready access to it anytime I wanted to in a brick and mortar library did not preclude me from making photocopies of just the article I needed and storing it in a physical filing cabinet. Even now, I often may narrow a topic down to a handful of articles which might be in electronic form, and choose to store them separately in DEVONthink in my dissertation database. It's helpful to have them separate from the whole for my purposes.

As for the time factor of copying and pasting, a supposed ten seconds, over and over throughout the day adds up, especially when it's often more than ten seconds when text and/or margins have to be readjusted. Again, copy and paste is a very handy temporary solution, but native printing is obviously ideal or more programs would neglect it.

If you don't need it, that's fine. If you still don't get it, well, I don't think there's any more I can say on the subject.

Individuals work different ways and that needs to be recongnized.

When a feature is not available currently, others should try and help them with work arounds for the time being. Perhaps, as I do not know, attempts to understand and offer a temporary or permanent work around can be misconstrued as patronizing. Perhaps the benefit of the doubt would be in order given the obvious weakness in communicating in this format.

With that said, printing should be a part of this program and is on its way.

John, thanks for your thoughts. This isn't as large of an issue for me as what it probably looks like. I came to the defense of the original poster because of the way I felt some were responding to him. Offering a temporary or permanent workaround is great as are genuine attempts to understand the issue. But the actual downplaying of his need to print with statements like "Any 'busy pastor' who hasn't got time to cut and paste hasn't time to do the job at all" and "it all seems pointless" and "I just don't get it" moves beyond the realm of charitable helpfulness to mere condescension and best and unnecessary judging at worst.

please let me apologize if i came across as condescending or patronizing - i meant neither.

i sincerely was looking for some examples of real world uses of printing from logos, not just "it doesn't print? why not?" with the explanation of your collection of information for a dissertation, and how and why you would want to do that via another software i now have a concrete reason and a real world use for printing by a normal, non-hypothetical, user. i was simply trying to peak into your (and others who think printing is vital to any software) workflow.

one of the most important and useful features of a forum like this, besides just troubleshooting, is the ability to share workflow ideas and options. you may have a really great system of organizing and using your digital library that maximizes Logos - if so, i want in on that! im not trying to put down or belittle anyone, i just want to make sure im getting the most out of my Logos experience and even more, the most out of my bible study and preparation for preaching/teaching.

the only way to get answers is to ask questions - and if i dont ask, you probably wouldnt tell

I am looking forward to being able to print. For NT Greek I want to cut and paste so I can create a grammatical flow, but what I loved in Logos 3 PC was printing BHS and ESV in parallel versions on the same page, working with the text and then bring this to the pulpit. This saved time, gave me neat clear fonts and layout. I can't wait for Logos 4 Mac to enable me to do this again. I switched from PC to Mac so I am out of luck till it is enabled in Mac.

Something I have used the print/export feature on the windows side that is pretty cool is exporting verses that I have marked up and highlighted as I studied through a text. Or if I make a visual filter that also exports over into word. Then I have it in a document i can easily print and take with me.

Logos 4 Mac does not yet have printing/exporting capability for Resources. Wiki page shows PC capabilities => http://wiki.logos.com/Print$2fExport

Logos 4 Mac does have option to copy and paste text - create *.txt file - download to Kindle for reading. Also can copy and paste into Textedit, save as RTF, email attachment to free kindle conversion - then download converted document to Kindle.

Living and learning - Kindle can use computer to download documents to device. Appears Kindle wireless delivery is $ 0.15 per MB.

By the way, iPad can run Kindle application as well as Logos (choose Library resources for offline use).

Surely we are not asking for a print facility just because 'programs print' –there must be some practical use for the end result.?

I could think of a number of things, but first and foremost are all the pages where I have more than one version displayed. Passage lists come to mind, because I study a lot with them, and I would find it helpful to print them out, have the versions neatly aligned and use them while working on an essay. Synopses also spring to mind. Or with the more complex searches I run, it would be wonderful to print out the analytical view of the search results. The trouble with this kind of displays is when you copy and paste, the formatting goes haywire, verses are not aligned, etc. So printing is still useful with more complex page layouts. And just imagine having handouts in the future, but not being able to hand them out

So I think printing should come sooner rather than later.

Hi Mike,

I would like to answer your question, too, and maybe someone will be able to help me find a work around. (Perhaps I am missing a really obvious way to do what I have always done with Logos - before getting L4 and then L4 Mac.)

Just tonight I tried to do a couple of simple tasks that I have done a thousand times over through the years with Logos and I couldn't make it work in L4 Mac. I looked through the forums and couldn't find an answer, then called Logos and was told it just couldn't be done anymore. I was also told that it might be up to a year before printing was available on Mac. I have to find a work around waaaayyyyyyy before then. :-)

Here's what I tried to do just tonight:

1. First, I did a Bible only search with just the NASB 95 update on Moab. It pulled up 174 results, (cross-references and part of the passage) but I couldn't print them. Why do I print them? Because I study inductively and I want them all laid out in front of me so I can observe them carefully, looking for key and repeated words and phrases between the many sections in the Bible which give information about Moab.

2. Second, I did a passage guide on Isaiah 15-16 and headed for the cross references to print them. Again, although there is a list generated, all I can do is hover over them individually. I need to be able to take them and study them each thoroughly (side-by-side) for comparisons and contrasts in order to continue to seek for the whole counsel of God on Moab (and on Isaiah 15-16). The printed lists become my observation worksheets.

On a side note, I have always studied this way with Logos and it helps me, not only with inductive study, but with physical pain and limitations.

If any of you can help me figure out a way to do what I need to do, I would very much appreciate it. This may not be what everyone does, but it is a bread and butter part of my studies, always has been, and I need to be able to continue doing it. :-)

I can see why you would want printing in your case, although the option to cut and past the text into a word processor might be more convenient and save the odd tree.

There are two possible work-rounds that I can see - neither of which address your need directly but may help you in the meantime.

1. If this facility was available on Libronix then it is still available if you have the program installed and the resources in your Libronix library. There is nothing to stop you running L4 and Libronix side by side if you want to; they are completely self contained programs.

2. Using the 'screen shot' and 'Grid' view I was able to print the Moab results onto two landscape A4 Pages and the Isaiah cross references on one.

Well, one thing that I would like to be able to go back and export are Bible puzzles. I used them frequently in church bulletins. My primary machine is a Mac, but my secondary was a Windows machine. I would export the puzzle on the Windows machine and then copy it to a flash drive to put onto my Mac to drag into Pages. That worked OK until my Windows machine died. So, now I'm puzzle-less and waiting till the Mac version catches up with the Windows version.

Having said that, I hadn't thought of the screen capture option until reading the above posts, so I may give that a try to see how it works.

I will be glad when Mac catches up to the Windows version. Until then, I'll wait patiently. It has been my experience that Logos runs much better on a Mac than on Windows (and I only converted to Mac recently, after using Logos on Windows for years).

+shift+K allows you to precisely select the bit of the screen you want.

Once you have the selection on your (say) desktop 'Preview' will allow you to save in the most appropriate format.

Thanks so much for your reply! I really do need to find out a way to function until it works in L4 for Mac.

I uninstalled my old Logos when I upgraded to L4 - can that be put back on my new computer, which is now a Mac? I didn't know Libronix 3 worked for Mac. And if so, how do you go about doing it? Gathering all the old CDs and reloading?

What I finally did last night, about 10:00 pm after losing several precious hours, was to make screen shots of everything I wanted which was well over a dozen, and then tried to organize then into a document, which of course was very hard because I couldn't see what the screen shot was until I got it into the document because it was such a teeny size. :-) They were all out of order when I got them into the document in Pages and then I had to make them into floating objects in order to move them, which also gave them the ability to move by themselves when I removed one next to it, so I spent a long time chasing them around until I had them all in line - in order. Finally I made a separate document and then brought them back in one by one to my original destination. But it gave me what I needed for last night. :-) (However, I had used the ‘verses’ view in order to get the most context possible. I can see that the ‘grid’ view would have been a better choice because it would have maximized my space without losing much context for the initial observations. If I had stayed up a couple of hours longer I would maybe have seen your post and been saved that part of the process.)

I was able to sit down and do some studying with them, but I couldn't then go back to the computer and mark my findings because they were screen shots and I couldn't alter them. So… Hmmm... I don't think that is going to be my complete and final work-around because I need to be able to go back and delete and compile info from the original verses based on my observations into one document (without typing it in manually). But, as you said, this may help in the meantime.

Today I am printing out the larger passages in which the ‘Moab’ search netted verses. I am thankful that you can print out passages still. This will get me what I need for today's study. Once again, the Lord has provided my ‘daily bread’.

I know that God knows what He is going to have me do and He will show me. Truly, In His Word I put my hope.

PS Cut (did you mean copy) and paste would be just fine with me! As far as the ‘odd’ tree - I cannot think of a better use for any part of His creation than to be offered up as a drink offering for the proclamation of the Gospel! In my stewardship, the goal is His glory! :-)

PSS I used control+shift+4 to take the screen shots. Does apple+shift+K have different capabilities? How did you make the little apple? And what key is it - the control key? I don’t see an apple on any of the keys. I am sorry for the simple questions. I am new to Mac (and I LOVE it) but I have a lot to learn. Like the tip on ‘Preview’ helped me a lot! Thanks again!

(Command)+Shift+4 provides the cross hairs to select a specific part of the screen.

Alt+Shift+K gives the little .

Yes I did mean Copy not Cut.

When I was imagining what you were trying to do I had in my mind that you would print each screen shot on a separate page and stick them on the desk one below the other which would give you a page just over A3 in size.

Anyway I am glad to be of help. You may have noticed that I started another thread asking what the difficulty was in providing 'Copy and Paste' in all the panels.

Trees are here for our use, not the other way around.

I guess this is a personal opinion not a biblical one. I prefer the rendering 'Trees are here for our benefit, not the other way round'.
