Looking for a resource to help with greek (explained)

Hello, bear with me, I am studying Romans 11, (I have little Greek background but I do get by), In Vs 22 the word translated "continue" has the Greek lemma "ἐπιμένω"

I notice the word "μένω" from a previous study, it is all through the NT, but I am curious how "ἐπ" works in here?

I would like to find a resource where the words were broken up with the prefixes and the suffixes are listed AND how they work with the word to give it substance.

I guess I am looking for a breakdown of the Greek root words and how they are used.

Lastly, I use BDAG, Louw-Nida, TDNTA and Mounce's expository dictionary. There is a chance I am missing the answer to my question in these resources,.....

James Dunn in his Word Biblical Commentary on Romans says this of Romans 11:22. "ἐπιμένω has the force of “persist in, persevere” (BGD, 2); cf. 6:1 and 11:23. Once again Paul underlines the point that perseverance is a Christian responsibility rather than an unconditional promise; “throughout the New Testament continuance is the test of reality” (Bruce); see also on 11:21, and note the comparable ei clauses in 8:13, 17 and particularly Col 1:23 (εἴ γε ἐπιμένετε τῇ πίστει). In the balance of the νέν and δέ clauses we might note that the severity is consequent on the unfaith, whereas the divine goodness precedes the human response."

Thank you for your reply. I want to explain myself better.... I got the meaning in this particular verse but I would like a resource that would point out ἐπιμένω was a form of "μένω" In this case I "caught" that, but only because I recently studied "μένω" I do not want to "miss" any more forms of words that might shed light on a particular passage.

For instance: To pick an unfamiliar word out of a passage; "καταλλαγή" it is translated "reconciling" in the KJV, but are there other forms of this word say "λλαγή"

Of course I can search this but it would be nice to have a resource that listed all the various word forms.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction or even tell me if I am on the wrong tract..... Thanks

You need the Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the GNT. It is exactly what you need.

Mike, if I'm not mistaken, epimeno is its own word and the epi portion does not really clue us in to any compound or prepositional addition to its meaning. Some Greek prefixes such as "Kata-" can do this and maybe "epi-" does in other words but not in "epimeno".

For clarification and for example, the simple form "-baino" means "I go" where:

katabaino = I go/come down

anabaino = I go/come up

The only problem is that "kata" by itself means "against" when it is paired with a genitive and "according to" when paired with an accusative.

It does not have a defined meaning when used as the prefix of another greek word as the English does when referencing Latin.

Paul is right,

When prepositions are attached to words they may or may not modify the meaning of the base word. What can happen is that(as I understand linguistics) the preposition starts off as a way to add emphasis or a shade of meaning. Then as time passes people start using the longer form interchangeably with the old form. Given enough time any extra meaning added by the preposition falls off and is indistinguishable from the base word. Of course, this isn't the only thing that can happen; a meaningful distinction can remain a long time. A good lexicon will help you discern which option is happening.

A little book (unfortunately not available in LOGOS) "Lexical Aids for Students of the Greek New Testament" by Bruce Metzger, has some helpful material, if used with the cautions given by Kevin. Always remember, word meaning is determined by usage in context, not etymology. Etymology can be enlightening, sometimes, but again, caution is always a good policy.
