Risk of Release Candidates

So, how risky are release candidates? I'd like some of the "fixes" available (like proper footnotes in Word), but I don't want a buggy Logos that locks up. Do most, or even many users fly with the "latest and greatest"?

My version reads 4.0d SR-2 (4.04.4.3415)

I've been running the latest and greatest and I cannot remember the last time I've had a lock up. I think early in the 4.1 beta process there was a substantial bug that they fixed the next day, but that was a while ago.

Release Candidates by definition are much less risky than beta's. A beta is code that is "getting ready" for public consumption. The programmers have done their bit to try and ensure it's stable but they need more eyes and fingers to poke and test it to make sure they found everything they needed to. So beta's are often early on flooded with bug reports because all the extra eyes and fingers find them.

Release Candidates are past the beta stage in that the programmers have diligently attempted to kill the bugs we beta testers have found. By the time it hits RC status it is literally a candidate for release (hence the name )

IOW: they THINK the RC is stable enough to be gold, but it usually gets broader adoption at this point and a few more eyes and fingers might find a bug (or not). The programmers will then attempt to kill those bugs and issue another RC. If no showstopper bugs show up the final RC will indeed become the real thing.

So, how risky are release candidates?

IMO, not very. If there are significant benefits you'd like to have, & if you can stand the possibility of more than one upgrade toward the gold version (with attendant internet impact + possible re-indexing), then the slight additional risk is likely much less than the benefit you'll gain.

In my experience they are pretty risk free, as are most of the Betas as well.

Whilst I was one of those who suffered when one of the Betas got confused in the install process I soon got back into using the Beta.

By the time we get to RCs they really are just looking for the last few bugs, by definition the programmers based on the Beta feedback thing that an RC is ready for the public and I think that most of those who run the Beta will tell you that, unlike some other developers, the Logos Team are a conscientious and professional bunch.

I am not speaking for Logos, but I suspect that the current RC is very, very close to being what goes gold. There are a few minor bugs that have been reported, but nothing that should cause great concern the last time I looked at the Beta forum. I would not worry about using it.

I have heard from some addiction experts that RC's are a gateway drug to Beta's so if you're predisposed to that kind of addiction you may want to resist the temptation.[;)]

I too find the RC to be very stable. Most of the betas have been too. I've never had even a beta to crash. I did have some sentence diagrams destroyed early in the beta process but that was my own risk. And by the way, Logos ended up restoring most of them and would have probably restored the others if I had let them know. They did that for one other user. But that was a totally separate issue from crashing. If you need to print, or diagram, or use any of the other new features, I say go for it. 4.1 is a much better program than 4.0. It is a pleasure to use this software and I am very thankful to Logos for developing it.

Glad you are up and running with 4.1. The new features are terrific. If you have not already done so, I would suggest watching Mark Barnes latest video on 4.1. He has a tradition of creating a video with each new release and always does a great job covering all the latest bells and whistles.

The worst experience was with an early 4.0d beta. One or two RC's had a crash that was quickly recognised and fixed, but nothing BAD!
