Coputer slowdown and hanging making it unusable

I have had a major problem with my computer. It took forever to loadup and then hung and became unusable even to the degree that leaving it on for hours did not move it on to do what I wanted it to do and all I wanted to do was open a file in windows.

I forced the comuter to turn off as a last resort and opened it in "safe mode" having been able to identify the programs that were doing all the work and establishing that the CPU was running at 100%.

Logos 4 was not running and I had downloaded and indexed everything except the last beta 5 resource download.

I could not understand it and removed a number of programs that I thought might be causing the hanging and waiting.

As a final resort I removed all the Logos 4 program.

I now have my coputer back and working after 36 hours.

I don't understand the link with Logos 4, but removing it gave me my comuter back.

Has anyone else had such problems?

My next problem is to re-install Logos 4. Can someone please give me the link for beta 6 when it becomes available as I understand that I will be able to install that from scratch without having to go through the various other beta updates.

Thanks

No. I've put my laptop to sleep overnight and it still woke up with Logos4 running!

From your description of 100% CPU it is possible that L4 was indexing your last B5 resource download - L4 itself does not have to be running as it has a process called Logos4Indexer.exe and several people have reported hangs when it has been indexing. Did you see a Logos4 icon in your Window's Notification Area during this time?

    Hi Dave

I checked all that and according to the logs it had finished indexing. I looked specifically to find out how long it was now taking - 11 hours to complete. I had checked it earlier that day.

There was no Logos 4 icon in the Windows Notification Area. According to Task Manager Logos 4 was NOT running. This was why I tried everything but uninstall L4 to try to resolve the problem.

After 36 hours my last resort was to uninstall Logos 4 and this solved the problem.

I do not understand it at all, but as this was the event that solved the problem, I can only assume that it was linked to Logos 4 in some way!

I have just revisited the indexer file and they appear to have changed and it is certainly smaller than the log I looked at originally.

I have attached the log. It appears to have been doing something else and possibly been cancelled. Even so that was earlier yesterday morning, the problem persisted for the rest of the day, making the computer unusable.

By "unusable" I mean double click My Documents and wait six hours for it to open. Interestingly I could access the shared files on the same computer from another computer on my network.

I believe that I had another download for Beta 5 which I had not downloaded simply by not opening Logos 4 and so stopping it from checking for up dates - or so I believed.

Ian, thanks for the log file. It's a very small log, but I don't see any errors in it. The Indexer can use much of the CPU while it's running, but I'm also curious about how much free hard drive space is left on your computer.

    Thanks, Melissa

    Hi Melisa

I have a 250GB hard drive of which 229GB is available but only 84.1GB is free.

I thought that the log looked small. I think that it was doing something in the background but there was no icon showing and ven Task Manager did not show any Logos 4 activity.

I would quite like to re-install Logos 4, but I need a link for the download.

Could you supply me with a link and am I able to download and install striaght to Beta 5 without having to go through any numerical beta sequences?

    Thanks

Having emptied the recycle bin I now have 85.3 GB available

    Try this link: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/TestBeta5/Logos4Setup.exe.

Installation went really smoothly. I was aware of extra resource downloads and they were all lined up for me so as soon as one install finished and indexing began I was able to interupt indexing for the next download. I did this until all downloads were done and left my machine to index overnight.

My first indexing took 13 hours with Beta 1. Later it was down to 10 hours, but this time you guys have been working hard! The indexing, according to the logs ('cos I was sleeping through it[;)]) only took 8 hours! Keep up the good work on reducing indexing.
