Smart Tags Formatting - Having a Fit!

If you want more than plain text formatting you need to select the "Copy Bible Verses" option as opposed to using "Replace with Passage"

Hi Graham, thanks for replying. I'm using the Replace with Passage option, because Copy Bible Verses does absolutely nothing. I assume if using Copy Bible Verses, one would then have to use Ctrl+V to paste the verses into Word. But nothing whatever happens. I almost have the formatting where I want it with Replace with Passage excepting the anomalies I mentioned.

I've been experimenting a bit further and the "replace with passage" seems to take account of the last template used in Copy Bible Verses.

So, if I select the "Copy Bible Verses" option I can then choose from the range of templates (in this case - "one verse per line" and get that formatting returned by pressing the "Copy and Paste" button:

If I then repeat this using the "replace with passage" option I get the same formatting returned.

I think this may be a recent change - it certainly isn't what is described in the wiki.

Logos published an article about the use of Smart Tags at http://www.logos.com/articleviewer/530

It states that:

"Replace with Passage" option is selected, the text is copied from the preferred Bible using the last style selected in the Copy Bible Verses panel is used.
The Logos Smart Tag will only insert plain text (with no formatting) when the Replace with Passage action is used; to insert formatted text, use Copy Bible Verses.

I hadn't looked at this in detail before but these statements seem to be contradictory. What I seem to be getting is the behaviour described in the first bullet.

Can anyone confirm the behaviour I am seeing and comment on whether this is a change?

Am using the latest and greatest Logos 4.1 SR3 just released yesterday.

Here is what I have set in the formatting for my For Smart Tags copy Bible verses style:

%CopyAllText
%NoFootnotes
%NoCitation
=Header
[FullPassageRef], "=ForEachVerse
[VerseText]"

I remember reporting that the close quote leaves a space between the period and quotation mark ages and ages ago. I assumed they would fix it. They did acknowledge the bug report.

If you remove "%CopyAllText" I think that gives you what you want with the exception of the space between period and quotation mark which you reference above.

It is this flag which is preserving verse numbers.

If I setup such a style then I get the result below for your sample verse using "replace with passage":

Jeremiah
33:3–5, "Call to me
and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have
not known. "For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the
houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to
make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword: "They are
coming in to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them with the dead bodies

Once again, many thanks, Graham, for your labors on this issue. I did remove %CopyAllText and that indeed did away with the verse numbers. However, if you notice carefully in what you had set up, it puts an open quote before each verse, and then the mysterious period, space, and close quotation mark.

I am very grateful for your help. Apparently the quotation mark before each verse is another bug.

I have removed the " after [VerseText] as this was producing the quotation mark at the end of each verse.

It does still end up with a space between the closing period and quotation mark but apart from that I think it works.

I also want to have my inserted passages to be formatted similar to what you have indicated, with one exception. I would also like the text between the quotes to be in italics. Is that possible? How would I go about changeing the Smart Tags style?

Michael, that part is easy enough. Go to Tools/Copy Bible Verses. When that dialogue comes up, then right click on what comes after Copy and a list of pre-designed styles will show you. You can then left click on the title of the style and click Edit. The dialogue will then come up where you can make the changes. I just deleted what I had and copy/pasted from Graham's formatting suggestion for what I wanted. If you go to the wiki and search for Copy Bible Verses you can find the formatting codes. Of course, at the bottom of the window with the different styles is a button to create a new one. You first highlight one most like what you want, and then click on the Create New Style button.Getting it to look like exactly what you want may not be so easy to figure out, as you can see from reading the posts in this thread.

Once you have what you want (the box below shows you how things will look as you enter the coding), then click Copy and Paste. Logos will then use the last clicked style that was Copy and Pasted.

I've gotten a lot of help on this forum. So glad to be able to assist someone else for a change!

Michael, italics is available in the code listing. You can find it here: http://wiki.logos.com/Copy_Bible_Verses

You'll just need to go in as I mentioned to either edit an existing style or create a new one, and play with the italics code. You'll be able to see how the formatting code changes you make actually affect the text. Hope this is adequate for you.

Thanks for the help. I created a new style called My Smart Tags Style and copied in Graham's code. Works great.

I see that the Replace With Passage smart tag uses the last Copy Vesre format that was used in Logos 4. Is there a way to set a default copy verses style?

Also, I am having no luck so far making the inserted text italic. Will continue to tinker with the code.

Hi Michael

I think this throws light on some of the discussions above.

In the published information about Smart Tags - (Logos pages and the wiki) it does state that the "Replace Passage" option will not preserve formatting - hence the inability to render bold and italics.

What it clearly does - as above - is handle things such as paragraph settings and removal of verse numbers.

Does this make sense?

And Graham helps us once again! Since the actual text formatting does not carry over with Replace with Passage, only other formatting elements, there is a workaround, I believe, Michael.

Whatever style I am using in Word is what the text is formatted to when I use Replace With Passage. So, it might be one more step, but if you switch to an italics style in Word that you can set up before you do the Replace with Passage, that just might give you what you need.

Thanks for your assistance. I hadn't read the pages mention completely. I don't have to have my Chapter/Verse number and Version in bold so I think I will stick to the Replace Verse. It's by far the quickest.

In my sermons and Bible Studies I've always put the text of the scripture passage in italics as well as any other quotes. Don't ask me why. Just something I've done for years. What I have been doing before the Smart Tags was typing in or cut and pasting in the text as normal for the whole document. When I have finished I have a Word macro that I run that goes through the whole document and puts everything between quotes in italics. Works great unless I forget to close a quote.

I'll just use the Replace With Passage to insert my passages and continue typing. When I'm finished my document, I'll just run the macro and all the scripture passages quoted will be in italics.

That seems the easiest for me just now.

The Copy Bible Verse did what I wanted, maintaining all formating, by slows me down. It also caused trouble because if you forgot to highlight the passage it would place the text wherever the cursor was, and for me it was usually in the middle of the passage causing me to pause and delete the unwanted text.

Thanks for your reply. I had thought about changing the style but that seemed to change it for the whole paragraph. I just wanted the text between the quotes to be in italics, not evrything I might type in the paragraph. See my last post to Grahan as to what I have have settled on.
