Mac and PC versions equal?

I think I remember it said that 4.0 would be the last release where Mac and PC vary in feature parity. I put it in my head that means that Mac is expected to catch up with PC.

But last night while I was taking a shower, the question hit me. Since 4.1 PC released about the same time as 4.0a Mac, maybe you didn't mean that Mac was expected to catch the PC, but that 4.1 would have feature parity although by time we get it, PC will be on 4.2?

Will the next version for Mac be 4.2? Or will we continue to lag behind in features? The thing that kicked off the thought pattern was the new features in 4.2 beta like the page view and BP auto hide. These things are far more exciting to me than printing or sentence diagramming.

I am not complaining or even making a suggestion. I just thought maybe you could clear up my sometimes foggy mind.

NOTE: The reality that will emerge will be a function of various factors that will occur in the future, which I am still unable to predict perfectly, so I'm telling you what I would anticipate rather than a firm promise. With that in mind:

There will probably always be differences between the Mac and Windows version. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and in some cases, some users would like them to be more different than we plan to make them (search these forums for the term "Mac-like"). However, I would expect those gaps to shrink in both scope and delay within the coming months so as to be little more than fodder for pedants in the forums.

Additionally, keep in mind that for many (most?) features, the Mac version leverages changes to the code that is shared between the two apps. In some cases, this means that we've gotten features that took many weeks to initially implement on Windows with minimal additional work beyond what was done by the original "Windows" developer.

Understood. I'm certainly not looking for any more than intent.The rest has been discussed before as well and I understand and appreciate your direction.

I guess what I am really wondering is this. Is your goal to have feature parity to the point of naming the next version 4.1 and wait on everything else til 4.2? Or will you be continuing more loosely like before, and shoot for 4.1 it with a possibility of some 4.2 features making it into the mix as well? Or will you jump to 4.2 alongside the PC Beta?

It isn't my intent to ask will feature X or Y make it into the next release. But that is almost what it sounds like I am leading to.

We don't have firm plans regarding this; much of it depends on how long it takes the Windows team to release 4.2—if we overtake them before this point, it's likely that you'll see a simultaneous release of 4.2 for both platforms. If not, well…I guess we'll do something else.

That's the attitude I like to hear. Nothing like a little competition between employees. I am in the Electrical contracting business and love it when I see that.

And one more thing to remember is in general the mac adaptation has gone far quicker, I remember a post a while back stating that releases for the mac in general were far more frequent on the mac side, I think it was twice as often. Even if i have the ratio wrong, I am sure we will get version that is on the windows side, sooner rather than later. I personally don't care if we are a few weeks behind, because L4 mac is working fine for me.. I do wish it was a faster product but I am not sure there will be any more optimizing of it (it might just be slow because that is the nature of the beast, although some people using fusion and the windows product runs faster on his mac than the mac version). Personally after seeing pictures of the windows version, i would rather use a slower product, but then i would like a more mac-like interface, but I know things could be worse. :S

You can be sure that there will be more optimization. There are a number of specific things we know of that can be enhanced, but our first priority at the moment is to make sure everything works correctly.
