Why I should upgrade to Platinum (from Gold)

Just like the Subject suggest, why should I upgrade to Platinum. Currently I have Scholar's Gold (w/Halot) and overall I'm quite pleased with all the resources I possess. I'm just wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from Gold to Platinum. I use Logos purely for academic reasons and I honestly do not need any of the "pastoral" resources. I would appreciate any advice/suggestions.

Kevin, I use my software for academic only reasons right now, but after the academics I can use the resources for whatever Jesus has me doing. Now, the only reason I upgraded to Platinum was because I needed BDAG and it was going to cost me $150. So, the price tag from gold to plat was only a few dollars more so I went for the upgrade. To me it was worth it.

If you go online to Logos and are logged into your account (your user name should show in the upper right corner of the Home Page), the Home Page should have a button 'upgrade'. Click on that and it will give you the cost to upgrade to Platinum and Portfolio.

You would get the Baker NT Exegetical Commentaries and the Pillar commentaries. Those alone are worth the price of the upgrade. I wish there was a way that Logos could adjust the price of the upgrade if you own a few of the resources already (BDAG/HALOT).

As someone who recently made this upgrade, let me suggest a way to decide if it's worth your while.

Go go http://www.logos.com/comparison
Examine the resources you will get in Platinum that are not in Gold.
Select the ones you can see yourself using at sometime, and those you would use constantly.
Go to the relevant pages and note down the cost of those you would use constantly (typically in a spreadsheet.)
Sum the value of those.
Optionally, add some value for the ones you would use sometime.

You now have a figure to decide whether the upgrade is worth your while.

If finances are tight, you will need to decide whether the resources in the upgrade are the highest priority for you at present, or of there are other resources (not in the base packages) that are your greatest immediate need.

That's basically the process I went through before launching out for Platinum a few weeks ago. I'm very pleased (if still a little overwhelmed) with the resources in Platinum.

You should upgrade from Gold to Platinum because of BDAG alone, but you also get several other great resources. For example you get both Baker's commentary sets, the one by Hendrickson and Kistemaker and the exegetical ones. Also you get the Pillars NT 10 vols. instead of 8. You get Charles Simeon commentaries (that alone would cost you $489.95 if purchased separately). So my # 1 reason for upgrading to Platinum was the more variety of commentaries and BDAG. I have customized my Platinum to include almost all of the Spanish books and the College Press NIV commentaries (I only need the 4 vol. upgrade to have them all). In all, I have more resources than Portfolio (perhaps not the same quality, but definitely more than portfolio) and ever since I upgraded I have not looked back. In fact, I see the Scholar's Gold package and sometimes I wonder why people even go for it when for a few dollars more they can just go ahead and get Platinum and get more resources for their money. I'm almost done paying for it on the payment plan. Once I'm done, I may look into getting other resources to make Portfolio look like a joke (not really I wish I had the JPS Tanak collection but I can't get it yet - plus I need to review it some more to see if it's worth getting.). Other than that, YES UPGRADE to Platinum and you will experience for yourself the beauty of it and your money will be well invested.

I went from Silver to Gold, then when L4 was released I went immediately from Gold to Portfolio. If you can afford it and you want a scholar's library, go straight from Gold to Portfolio. I upgraded to Portfolio because it represents the best ratio of academic to non-academic resources. Purchasing Portfolio saved me literally thousands of dollars in individual scholarly titles.

I think you can. Call Logos sales and someone there may be able to work on an adjusted price. I did exactly that.

I upgraded because of the additional commentaries and because I wanted the Hebrew-English Interlinear, more theological references, and Nag Hammadi in English (which the OP may already have these).

Nicky, BDAG is the premier Greek lexicon. It is the most up to date, and the most directly relevant to Biblical studies.

What the dear brother quoted above says is my sentiment. But, without BDAG you'd still have plenty of great resources for lexical study, but just not as thorough and not as authoritative. It is a literal staple.

This is a frequent question and is difficult to answer, Platinum is great value and I personally do not regret upgrading to it from Gold. The question that none of us can answer for you is whether it contains enough material that you need to justify the upgrade or whether the money would be best directed at specifc resources that will help you study.

You may also want to consider the future and whether some of those resources that you currently do not require may be of value then. I certianly have foudn that a lot of the resources that I thought would not be of any use to me have become an essential part of my armoury over time but then I am not focused on a specific area of academic study.

Platinum is definitely great value for money and will almost certainly add resources to your library that will assist you in your studies, what it may not deliver is specific resources that you would benefit from.

I really like BDAG because it doesn't just give you a words definition, but it shows you how a word is used in other 'Early Christian Literature". It gives you a feel for how words were used at the time of the NT being written. As mentioned by others, it is the most authoritative source. Also, with the paper book you really needed some Greek in order to look up the words. Logos makes the entries available to everyone.

Yes, it is.

I can not address your specific needs resource-wise but here are some general facts: Base packages reflect the greatest value you can get for your dollar. Upgrading packages is the second best deal you can get. Of all the packages offered, The Platinum package appears to be the all-around best deal for your dollar, having the lowest cost per book.

You will always save more going with the biggest package you can start out with. I started with Silver, upgraded to Gold, then Portfolio. I skipped Platinum because I have many different areas of interest and was genuinely wanting to read in all of the different content areas (Apologetics, Archeology, Theology, Commentaries etc.) You will have to make the value determination yourself. When you tally the value of what you will really use, I think you will discover Platinum and Portfolio are both great deals (even after dismissing the titles you won't use.) Portfolio is just a mighty big jump. Sometimes too big.

Well, looks like others have already answered your question. One other reason why BDAG is so good, is that in other lexicons you find various meanings for one greek word. That same greek word can mean something different depending on the context -- with BDAG you get the meaning of the word in it's actual context and a list of verses where it appears. If the meaning changes a little in another context, BDAG gives you the meaning and the verses where it appears. Is the best lexicon I've ever used. My favorite used to be Thayer, but with BDAG I hardly ever go to it anymore.
