The Interpreter's Bible '52-'57

Sorry if this is a little of topic. But I have two questions maybe more..depending on reply's.

"The Interpreter's Bible", 12 Vol. Set, Abingdon Press 1952-1957

Has Logos ever offered this series set? ( I can't seem to find it in the products section or listed in the base packages.)

I have found a print version for a fair price (would prefer a digital version). I have read a small segment from Hebrews and another from Proverbs. While I think the KJV is a bit of a drawback I found the exegetical/expository segments solid.

Does anyone know of the work well enough to give an opinion of the work and any potential/particular doctrinal stance.

Can anyone sight a equitable alternative already in digital form from Logos. I have the Gold package now but still feel this area is weak in my Logos library.

Hi Anthony, another Bible software company's web site describes it as being "From a Wesleyan Holiness Perspective".

Abingdon is the publishing house of the United Methodist Church. The Interpreter's Bible reflects mainline Biblical scholarship during the period it was created. Each volume had a Biblical scholar write the exegesis and another person (pastor or professor in another discipline) write the homiletic content. The target audience for the Interpreter's Bible was "the educated layman" (sic), but it was used by many, many pastors.

The Interpreter's Bible was replaced by The New Interpreter's Bible a few years ago. Thus, the older Interpreter's Bible is generally available at a quite reasonable price. In the new set the same scholar writes both the exegesis and the application sections. Once again, the set is representative of mainline scholarship.

The set has been available in a digital form from Cokesbury in the past - I would assume it still is, though I'm sure you can get it much cheaper elsewhere.

I've also heard recently (I think on this forum) that there are negotiations regarding IB for Logos, but it may just be the newer stuff (NIB, etc.).

Frankly, I find the Folio software that Cokesbury used for the IB, IDB, NIB, etc., to be so lousy that i rarely use it, even though I'm definitely "mainline."

Google "WORDsearch Interpreter's Bible" and you should find a result for it. I wish Logos would release the old and New Interpreter's families of products but I don't think Abingdon is very open to it... They have allowed another company to put the old 12 and old 1 volume commentary into a computer format, but my guess is the fact they sell their own software versions keeps them from wanting it elsewhere. I have sent numerous emails over the years with silence being their only reply.

No, it has never been offered by Logos.

As a United Methodist pastor, I am very familiar with the old Interpreters Commentary. I have it on my shelf. I would not say it represents a "Wesleyan Holiness Perspective." It is certainly not holiness, and It is not very Wesleyan, in my opinion.

No, it represents a more liberal mainline perspective. It has some of the better liberal scholarship of its day. Not very evangelical. Assumes liberal positions to be facts rather than theory. Gives no serious conisideration to other points of view.

It is sort of the unofficial official United Methodist commentary. I would not list it among the better commentaries on any particular book of the Bible.

I would say the Interpretation Commentary - which is available in Logos - is a much better alternative for a Wesleyan perspective. More up to date as well.

Interpretation Commentary was never available as a complete set for logos. Logos lost the right to sell it shortly after it's release in Folio. It may be coming back to Logos if there is enough interest but as of today it's not yet listed as being under contract, just gathering interest.
