Search for Maps by Title and Scripture Reference

It has been recently suggested that we have the ability to search for maps by Title. I would like to add the ability to search for Maps also by Scripture Reference. If the New Logos Maps were tagged with Scripture references then that would allow for more context specific Maps. For example if I am reading in 2 Samuel 6:12 about the ark coming to the house of Obed Edom in the city of David whick is in Jerusalem, I don't want to seach through about 60 Maps on Jerusalem. If the Map "Movements of the Ark" was tagged with the passage then I can find the appropriate map. The ESV Bible Atlas and the Holman Bible Atlas have Scripture references accociated with each map. It would be very beneficial if all the Scriptural maps were tagged with Scripture references. This would also be helpful when following alone with various O.T. battles. If someone could add "and Scripture reference" to the already suggest Search for Maps by Title then I would vote on that.

You can sort of do this now with a search like this: (#image NEAR <2 Sam 6>) AND map, although I wouldn't claim it's foolproof. The AND map could probably be removed if you didn't mind search through a few images by eye.

I tried this but it seems like the image itself is not tagged by Scripture reference. I want the ability to pull up Bible Places and type in for example 2 Kings 14:23 and have the Map from the Holman Bible Atlas Israel and Judah in the Days of Jeroboam and II and Uziah come up as well as the New Logos Maps that deal with that verse. I tried this reference in the search and Holman didn't come up.

Another reason it would be good if the maps were all tagged with Scripture references would be so they'd come up in a passage guide. This one, for example, should be tagged with 2 Kings 14:23-28; 2 Chron 26; and Amos 1:2-2:3.
Are you finding this map in Biblical Places, by the way? I have the Holman Bible Atlas, but searches in BP for Tyre, Damascus, etc., did not find this map, nor any in the Holman Bible Atlas, for that matter.

Rosie: Yes, this is only found in the Holman Bible Atlas but not in Biblical Places. Apparently not even the cities were tagged for this map. In there any way to add and "Scripture Reference" to the suggested features without starting something new to vote on?

John, it looks like you've already figured out what I was going to suggest, which is adding a comment to the UserVoice suggestion.

John:
There are a few different issues going on here.
In the case of the Holman Bible Atlas, the references are tagged, and you can find this map by doing a Passage Guide for 2 Ki 14:23 and looking in the Media Resources. I'm not sure that all resources with maps have their references tagged, however.
The Logos maps have the richest metadata, and if there's a named place in the passage, you'll find relevant maps in the Biblical Places of the Passage Guide.
That said, i agree with the general sense of this thread that we need to do more to make the maps accessible by Scripture reference especially, and also by title.
For the record, there are 64 Logos maps. Here's a list by title, with links. Note this will bring them up in the context of the last Biblical Place you visited, which may not actually be on the map which is displayed.

So why doesn't searching for #image ANDEQUALS <2 Kings 14:23> find it, or indeed any of the other images in the passage guide?

Hmm ... good question. I'm not a search expert, but i'll ask one.

Is is possible to drag these map links into my favorites or create a specific link to a specific map?

Yes, just drag from the tab of Biblical Places to a folder you've created in your Favorites tab. I've done it with all my Logos maps and am working on trying to find all the ESV Study BIble maps too, so I can do it with those.
You can create a link to a specific map via the Biblical Places panel menu:
It comes out looking like this: logos4:Places;id=Samaria;map=JudahAfterFallOfJerusalem. You can delete the "id=xxxxxx;" part because that doesn't select the map; it selects the last location you looked up, which might or might not be where you want to go back to if you just want to open the map.

I wonder if you could do the same with a note file and then the titles would be searchable in the Passage guide? Maybe even add scriptures beside the appropriate maps for now and then you would find the appropriate map you were looking for.

That's what I did. I copied the list to Word first, and then copied it from Word and pasted it in a Note file. (Pasting directly in a Note will lose the links, but going through Word will retain them).

Thanks Todd. I had tried a direct paste not thinking it would work so wasn't disappointed when it didn't. Forgot the via Word trick.

Short answer: it's complicated. [:)]
Longer answer: the primary strategy for collecting images to display in the Media section is to find People/Places/Things and LCV concepts associated with the passage, and then display images for those. Images tagged with references are also shown (but in this case, the image is not tagged that way). Media selection and ranking is a tough problem we're still working on ...

OK, thanks for the explanation. Make sense - though it again highlights the need for even more thorough tagging. I think I'll create a custom guide just with a Media section to conduct these searches in the future.
