Logos 3 and/or 4 on Linux

Has anyone run Logos 3 or 4 on a windows emuation under Linux Ubuntu? If so, with what success or satisfaction?

My notebook is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 and I use it to remote into my Vista Ultimate desktop to run my Logos, etx Bible programs when away from the office. I'd like to run them from the notebook if possible and power down my desktop when leaving the office.

Is it possible?

Hi Michael, there is a loooong thread on here about Logos and Linux. Here's the main breakdown.

L3 is based heavily on IE +COM and as a result it is nearly impossible to get even basic functionality on Linux. There is a WINE project page, and a bounty there to get it working if you want to contribute.

L4 dropped IE+COM and moved entirely to WPF which is part of NET 3.5. The good news is that the MONO project is working on NET in Linux.

Theoretically we may be able to get L4 running via WINE+MONO(+Moonlight?) under Linux. As of yet, my attempts to install and run L4 under Linux with various setups has been unsuccessful.

If however you wanted to run Linux and then run a virtual Machine (QEMU etc) with Windows installed it should work just fine.

The short answer then is: not yet.

The full answer has yet to be written.

Thanks for your quick replys. Thanks what I was afraid of. I started to try to do it in a virtual environment and opted to install Sun's Virtualbox, mainly because I have used it successfully on my Vista desktop. I was able to install the linux version on my notebook and then set up a Vista virtual machine and Vista installed fine as far as I can tell but when I launch the vista virtual machine it slows everything to a crawl even before trying to istall Logos 4. Even host applications on Linux are slowed to a crawl, sometimes taking several minutes to open an application. I'm sure that is because of limitation on my notebook.

Howevr, creating virtual machines to run other linux desktops and running them within my host Linux system run fine with no noticiable slow down.

If I were to try a different virtual application other than Virtualbox, do you have a suggestion?

I have been running both Logos 4 and 3 in Virtualbox Virtual machines - Logos 3 for about 2.5 years and 4 since release last fall. The host is Ubuntu 9.10 and the guests are XP Pro SP-3. I set them up in separate VM's. I have 6gb of memory total and allocated 3gb to the L4 and allocated 1.5 gb to the L3 VM. L4 uses lots of disk so allocate at least 50gb of disk space (for platinum and quite a few additional resources in my case).

L4 seems to run better in the VM than when I do a native boot to XP.

I have found Virtualbox to be much nicer to work with than VMWARE but I haven't used VMWARE for over two years. The cut and paste support between guest and host is outstanding.

Same here running L3 on XP Pro Service pack 3 (64bit) using VirtualBox on Ubuntu 9.10 without any problem for 1 1/2 year now and this is much more easier to setup than WINE.

From what you described sound like there is not enough RAM left after you start your virtual machine.

What is the specification of our laptop, remember you need to at least have around 1.5G of memory for your host machine otherwise the whole system will be come very slow and unstable.

For example if your host machine has 4G of RAM. When you setup a virtual machine with 2G of RAM in Virtual Box and start that virtual machine, virtual box will take 2G, and only that virtual machine can use that 2G of RAM, so you only have 2G of ram left for your host system and other applications you are running on your host system.

I am not a Logos employee, but I do not think Logos 4 will run on Mono/Linux any time soon.

Logos 4 requires WPF and .NET 3.5 I believe; if not please correct me.

According to the Mono roadmap, they do not even have WPF supported yet:

This page (http://www.mono-project.com/WPF) says "At this point, the Mono project does not have plans to implement Windows Presentation Foundation APIs as part of the project. The notes on this page are merely to keep some notes around. " so it may not be coming at all.

Virtualbox alternative: VMWare Server is free

VMWare knowledge base has performance tip for backing store files:

Possibility: USB flash drive for backing store files may significantly speed up VMWare virtual machine - each page of memory is written to store file.

For VirtualBox, found User Manual, but did not see configuration tip like VMWare above:

Suspect Virtual Box Guest Additions good to install in Virtual Machine since VMWare Tools is helpful.

I am new to Logos and pretty new to linux. I have Ubuntu 9.10 running and sun virtual box virtulizing XP and so far it runs Logos 4 just fine...albit only in day one but it loads everyting and just did a word search. I have a 5 year old Dell XPs M140 with a 60 Gig hard drive and 2 Gig of ram. I had to allocat 24 Gig of of space to the hard drive for the virtual machine and 1.2 gig of ram.

I would say the problem is Vista. It is very memory and space intensive. XP is supported to 2014. It runs fine on virtual box. I have not loaded windows 7 but it runs a lot smother and is less of a hog then Vista.

I've been thinking about attempting to run Logos 4 in Ubuntu also. Are you still having success with it? I have a dual boot system with Win 7 and Ubuntu. Can you jot down the steps I would need to take? Do I need to reinstall Logos 4 onto the Ubuntu drive partition, or can Virtualbox access it where it is? Thanks.

Late post, I realize, but for what it's worth I used Logos 4 successfully in an Oracle Virtual Box Win XP for several months without much difficulty. I'm back to Windows as my main OS again now mostly because Win 7 came "free" w/a new PC and because I got tired of running Vbox every time I wanted to use my Logos.

But it did work fine. The only problem I recall was that it seemed the user settings (workspaces in particular) would get clobbered periodically for no apparent reason. Maybe the antivirus was interfering? Anyway, when they got damaged, the result would be that L4 would sort of hang. I don't generally use home page, so it would go to the main search etc. workspace I use and sit there hourglassing. I soon learned to go into the appropriate folders and delete a couple of files then run L4 again.

Since I moved back to Win7, I haven't further studied why that problem occurred in XP. I doubt it has anything to do w/the Vbox in a Linux environment. More likely, something in my Windows config. exposed an obscure bug. This may not even be an issue anymore.

My advice to Linux lovers: get Oracle Vbox (it's free) and if you've still got an XP license somewhere, install XP in the Vbox, then install L4 in that. There's some waiting when you want to use it, but if you have other Windows apps you have to run in a Vbox, you'll probably have it up a good bit of the time anyway.

L4 did seem slightly slower in the Vbox but not a whole lot (this was on an Intel i5 520m PC with 4 gb RAM).

I have a netbook that runs Logos 4, but I like the idea of switching to Ubuntu for faster general performance. Logos is important enough that it would be a deal breaker if it wouldn't work.

My netbook isn't powerful enough to handle a virtualization software on top of Logos 4, so that's not really an option.

I have a netbook that runs Logos 4, but I like the idea of switching to Ubuntu for faster general performance. Logos is important enough that it would be a deal breaker if it wouldn't work.

Linux can access (read) many Logos resources using http://biblia.com in a web browser.

Option: linux rdesktop would allow a netbook to remotely control a Windows computer running Logos 4 (or use VNC to remotely control Mac OS X, possibly a headless Mac Mini that could be carried with netbook).
