Large number of Collections can cause slow down in L4...

In that I just upgraded to a new laptop and expected a massive increase in speed but got only little increase - I thought I would look into some of my Logos habits to see if there is a change or two I should make.This is when I read on one of the forums that a large number of Collections slows performance (By how much, it doesn't say). I then went into my Collections and counted 114. (I only really need about a hundred and ten of them Smile )

Here are some questions that come to mind:

1. With so many collections, could I be slowing down my operations within Logos (beta)?

2. I also use Visual Filters in 4-6 resources at any given time (prob. 8-20 filters in each resource)

3. When I looked at my Collections, there is a new feature in the right - click menu when you click on a collection in the list. The options are: Include in Collection, Exclude from Collection, Delete. I don't know what these options accomplish.

do I need to sacrifice convenience and personal efficiency for speed and performance at this point? What else can I try?

PS - My new machine is the Asus G73JW (w/ 8 gigs of DDR3 1333RAM and 1.5 gigs of GDDR5 on the video card)

First, the Include and Exclude choices are for merging smaller collections into a bigger one. Include carries out the same function as dropping the whole collection into the currently open collection's "+ These Resources" area. Excluded drops the collection into the "- These Resources" area of the open collection. So you could create, say, a collection called NICOT and one called NICNT and then create a collection called NIC and simply include the two previous collections in this collection and avoid having to create any rules for the NIC collection.

I, too have a large number of collections. I believe Mark Barnes examined the impact these had on Logos' speed and noticed that the collections were being resynched frequently. I believe Logos fixed that in 4.1. (I may have the details wrong, here, so it may still be an issue.)

What I know slows Logos down is checking the "Show in parallel resources" box. When I unchecked the many I had selected this way, my speed picked back up.

Hopefully others will chime in and be able to help you see a little more speed.

BTW: Your laptop specs look great. How fast is your hard drive? What sort of processor and speed do you have?

In answer to your question, the Processor is a Core i7 740 QM running at 2.66 Ghz - 1.7 Ghz with turbo boost speed over 2.8. The HD is 500 Gig and 7200 RPM.

I went from vista to Win 7 with this laptop and from duo core to Core i7. Also from 4 gigs of RAM to 8 and from a fair video card to one that should be explosive. My hope is that I just need to tweak something to see the noticable increase in speed that I was expecting.

60 boxes later! I have unchecked 60 boxes and some (more than 15) of the Collections had between 70 - 160 resources in them. I shut down Logos and will now reopen it in hope ... We'll see.

If Logos can't run acceptably on this machine, I question what sort of machine it would do well on.

Unless things have changed you should see a significant improvement.

With the improved ways that Logos 4 handles parallel resource lists using collections is almost unnecessary. I still have 5 or 6 checked for unusual collections, but that's it. Like you, I once had dozens checked.

Of course you had them checked on your former computer so you still should have seen an improvement with your new machine.

Collections have been tweaked in 4.2 beta, so there shouldn't be major performance problems associated with them. But as Mark said, the "Show in Parallel Resources" box should only be ticked when it is needed. If a collection isn't made up solely of dictionaries/lexicon, commentaries or Bibles, then it certainly shouldn't be ticked.

Visual filters also do slow things significantly - more so in some resources than others. Use them when you need them, but have them turned off otherwise.

I guess the real questions are: Where is Logos slow? How long is it taking to perform those tasks? If you're particularly concerned about something, upload the log of you doing it.

Mark, I use visual filters on my main bibles: ESV, NASB, KJV, LXX interlinear and LHI (interlinear). I have different filters in each Bible to bring out morphological aspects of the underlying text. I look at the verbs for instance in ESV, then pronouns/verbs (singular and plural). I have filters for the definite article (which is a help at times) and constructs, sequentials, perfects/ imperfects, etc. As I am learning new rules or constructs, I try to make a filter for it so I can realize some practical benefits.

I did (at your prompting) uncheck a number of boxes and these changes have really helped.

On your Locator Bar, there is a parallel resources icon (It looks line two parallel lines next to the Visual Filter icon {3 circles}). Clicking it brings up resources that have entries that are parallel to the current selection. See my screenshot

Hi Ron, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience with Logos 4 on the new laptop. I am planning to buy a new laptop early next year. Currently looking at an HP with the following specs: Corei7-720Q, 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD (7200rpm) and 1GB Radeon 5760 Graphics Card. In essence it appears not to far removed from your machine. I was planning to buy this machine for the same reason you bought yours: the expected speed boost. I really hope that your disappointment is because of your many collections and not the machine [:D]
