There is a reason why the titles in the NG are indented based on the post to which they respond. The left aligned format of the web thread makes it more difficult to recognize the relationship of the postings.
I agree Martha,
I'm missing the threaded view as well. Most forum softwares can handle it though. I can't imagine this one can't.
There is a quote mechanism in the Forums (as I have just used) just hit reply on the post you want to reply to, and hit the quote button you see in blue below. I hope htis helps the text you are refering to. See image below.

The problem with this "mechanism" as you call it is that it depends on the sender rather than on the platform. In the Newsgroups it was a natural consequence of the Newsgroup protocol. The protocol itself tracks the message I am responding to.
In the forums, if the author of a message does not "quote" the original message, it is difficult (sometimes impossible) to determine which message is being responded to.
Blessings,
Floyd

I'm sorry but I don't see an extra click as being too much of a hinderance. To me the fact that we have a place to discuss topics that is not reliant on extra software, and can be run through any web browser is better than the NG were. Full disclosure: I ":grew up" on Message Boards and when I first saw the NG I found them to be very confusing and archaic. IT made no sense to me, and looked like a result of antiquated software writing limitations.

Of course you are right - it is not a hindrance, IF it is used by every poster. Since it is not used regularly - the lack of a way to track responses can become difficult.

It is up to those of us who know about it to educate those who don't when we see the confusion about the function. ITs not that its not there it is there people just need to know it's there
