Christmas 2010 Master Collection (2,010 vols.) A GREAT Bargain!
I am attaching an Excel file that shows how the Master Collection 2010 stacked up against my Portfolio Library that had many add-ons. The file has only the 2,010 books that make up the Christmas 2010 Master Collection. Books that were in my library were highlighted yellow. Those that I did not have and were only included in the Master Collection (not the 1,000 book collection) were highlighted in Pink. This is basically what I used to determine that the Master Collection (even with nearly 700 duplicating titles in my current library) was more than worth the asking price. Especially since many of the collections that were on my "purchase eventually list" were complete in the Christmas 2010 Master Collection.
Hopefully my efforts will help some of you sort things out and save lots of you some time.

Below is sort of a summary of what I have discovered and it was enough for me to determine that the Master Collection is a Great Bargain for me (and I have Portfolio). If you have any of the other base packages, there would be even fewer duplicates for you.

That's it, I'm done. I placed my order yesterday. Although I may work on the collections within the Excel file somemore in preparation of creating Collections when the resources download. If I do, I will post the new file as an add-on posting later.
I have to say the posting at http://community.logos.com/forums/p/27574/203975.aspx#203975 has a nice conversation going on in it.
Here is a thought to consider. So if you only got 1,340 resources from the collection at $2,010. that would be $1.50 per resource. Now if you think of those resources you really value (you know the ones on your "list") that are included in the Collection, what would they cost you any other time of the year?

Could someone please confirm for me if the books in the 50% off Specials are the same as those that are offered in the Christmas Collections? I apologize if the answer is obvious but I have been somewhat busy (I'll blame the season and our apparent psychological requirement that everything has to be done before Christmas no matter what part of life it relates to) and have not had time for a detailed look as yet.

If you go to http://www.logos.com/products/search?Specials=Featured you can build your own collection of those books shown. They are the Individual Christmas Specials that are 50% off and are the ones included in the Christmas bundles.
If you want to see only the ones Logos shows that you do not own use http://www.logos.com/products/search?Specials=Featured&unlocked=no (there is a problem with this though...some of the books you may already own so you will want to check your library before actually purchasing.

No discounts per the Dec 14th blog posting. Before reading it, I asked my sales representative and the answer was no. But even with there being no discount it made economic sense for me to make the purchase.

Jonathan, they have said "no" to that. Their assumption is that we will already own volumes, and no further discounts will be offered. So for Portfolio people like you and me . . . we'll pay the same price regardless. I like the sheffield and tt stuff. Just no coin.

Even with having so many of the resources, there were key collections that were on my "list to purchase" that make economic sense for me to grab the Master Collection. I am getting alot of resources that I didn't have to have, but could be very useful. Sort of like when I upgraded to Portfolio when it first came out. There were enough of the resources on my "list" that I actually saved money over buying them individually and I received lots of additional resources that I wasn't that familiar with, but turned out to be hidden treasures that I wouldn't have known about outside the upgrade.

It is included on the Master Collection List, but it doesn't have the Black's Commentary in it's title. It is "The Revelation of Saint John" in the list and is not with the other Black's commentaries. I had trouble locating it myself.

All the collections that I am showing in my original post can be sorted in the excel file by the "collection title" column...it will make it a bit easier to see all the books that are included in that particular collection and easy to verify if all the books are included.

My pleasure to share, I couldn't see not sharing it. Hopefully it will save others a lot of time.
Just wanted to mention if I hadn't before that all the resources do not have their collections listed, mostly just the ones listed in the original post are documented within the file. There are lots of other collections that are represented in the list that I didn't take time to document. I was sold on the package before I even got to the point I stopped at, but continued on in preparation for creating the collections in L4 when they download.

Picking up the 2010 Master collection may be a more efficient means to the same end. On the other hand, isn't there a 'build your own' 50% off sale? I may be better off being more selective.

I personally think this is a GREAT Collection, and I'm THRILLED that Logos has given us this opportunity. I did contact my sales representative a month ago on the Library of NT Studies: JSNTS on Paul (17 vols.) and Library of NT Studies: JSNTS on the Gospels and Acts (16 vols.) and was just about ready to make the jump after Thanksgiving, but I decided to wait to see what the Christmas Specials would bring. So glad I waited. For those of you who are interested in both of those collections and do not have the ICC NT commentary series ... I did discover the New Testament Studies Bundle (64vols.) was the way to go on that purchase....that was until the Master Christmas Collection showed up!
Just a note: The Master Collection is missing only 11 volumes of the Pauline Studies Library (35 vols.) and I find that after adding the Master Collection to my library I will have all of the titles. The following titles are the ones missing from the Master Collection:

To me, if the cost is much more than $2/book, I feel like I've been priced out due to limited finances (small church, no book budget beyond ALL professional costs for the year)... As a consequence, no 50% off collection makes the cut.

This confirms for me my decision NOT to purchase this collection. I have Portfolio already, and dozens of other PrePub purchases as well, including the T&T Clark Bible Guides, which is a high ticket item at $850, as well as a few other of the collections listed. Aside from the resistance I have to purchasing items twice even at a great discount (which obviously decreases the discount value by half), the principle of the thing prevents me from considering it. Portfolio owners, who have already stepped up and PROVED their good-customerhood to Logos, shouldn't be forced to rebuy items to get additional "big value" discounts for their BIG TICKET purchases. As a customer who has dropped well over $10K with Logos, I shouldn't have to double purchase items in order to qualify for additional big % savings. I honestly believe that Logos should "cater" to my willingness to send them thousands of dollars by offering me packages that have been designed with me & other top Logos customers (i.e. Portfolio owners) in mind. Of course, they don't have to...nor do I have to send them another dime.
As I said in another thread I started regarding this Master Collection, there's plenty in it I would like, I'm just not going to pay that kind of money for those items when so much of the collection is stuff I already have. Good deal or not...it's a far less of a good deal when I'm rebuying a vast number of resources.

In fact, having just looked a little more closely at the items in this collection that I had before, I have determined that I would probably be best served if I cancelled ALL of the over $10,000 of PrePubs and CP items currently in my pipe and wait a few years until Logos throws them into a collection. This is true for a couple of reasons:

1) I don't use many of these resources on a regular basis, or even at all up to this point in time. Not having them for another year or two or three or five won't bother me.
2) I bought the T&T Clark Bible guides on PrePub for far more percentage-wise than the current $1 per title in the Master Collection. Because I bought it (and other items in the MC) on PrePub, it is now keeping me from being willing to pay the current asking price of the MC, even though the MC contains many items I would like to have. With Logos's refusal to create bulk collections as add-ons to the base collections, and the incentive they are creating to not buy on PrePub, it seems like the smart thing to do if I want to add the most titles to my library for the least overall cost is just wait...even if it is a matter of years. As it stands, with the way Logos keeps creating these bulk collections, every purchase I make today is a disincentive to take advantage of larger,more greatly discounted bulk purchases in the future. I can't and won't take advantage of this current bulk offering, and if I want to be in a position to take advantage of future bulk offerings, it seems the best thing I can do is cancel all of my currently scheduled purchases.
This is a strange dynamic Logos is creating...quite odd.

Your work makes it much easier for me...in 2012+...to work with Logos to complete these collections in future purchases.
Maybe next Christmas they'll offer a "fill in the gap" promotion...

Thanks very much for your further help Praiser. Looking at the items in the Master collection that I would really use and which I need for my particular studies, I find that I can purchase them all for 50% off at around US$1,300. This is a significant saving over the Master Collection price. I realise that buying books at $2 each is an incredible bargain, but buying 300 books I won't need just doesn't make sense, even at $2 a book.

But refusing to consider the nice offer Logos has extended to ME is cutting off my nose to spite my face. I wish you'd reconsider the facts and not the "principle."
This deal rivals my Portfolio purchase in value. I'm grateful.

Like I said...I would like to have many of the Master Collection titles in my library, but the truth is I wouldn't read most of them--or even open them--even once during the next year of two. I don't buy most of what I purchase in Logos because I want to read a particular resource through. I buy it in case I end up needing it during a query. I have also found useful quotes, thoughts, and ideas in resources I didn't even know I had.

I will add more at this point only if I consider it a spectacular deal. One of my "if's" is the simple consideration that I not be asked to pay a second (or in a few cases even a third time) for resources I already own. You say that you're happy with this particular deal. Great...for you. For me, I would feel like a chump. Will I then be asked to buy the same resources a fourth or fifth or sixth time too, just so I can pick up the latest Logos bulk purchase offering? I'm not going to do that. If Logos wants me to part with my wallet's contents, they will do so by offering me SUPPLEMENTS to the resources they have already sold me. As far as I see it, each item they have sold to me already that is in the Master Collection could instead be an item that I don't have...only it isn't. Truth is, I can wait...and I'll be just fine. I may even buy an occasional book in hardback used on amazon or ebay. When Logos offers me a deal that I haven't paid for once already, I may very well take them up on it. I am certainly willing.
Let me say this--I am grateful that Logos is offering bulk purchase options. I have said many times I prefer to buy in bulk, even if I have to drop a huge nickel to do so.

David, How about this deal? I used my influence a a forum MVP to get you a special price:
- You can have everything in the Christmas 2010 Master Collection that you do not already own.
- You will only download titles you do not already have. (You won't be getting two copies of anything.)
- Since you will only be buying about a thousand books I can't sell them as cheap as a buck a book. It averages more like $2 per title. Some of these books list at $190 each!
- You have to take all or nothing, no picking or substitutions.
- You will get roughly $30,000 suggested retail value of books.
All this for the limited time (January 2, 2011) special price of $2010 (payment plans available)
It is all in how you look at it. $2 a book is not a bad deal. Consider the facts and you will come out ahead buying. But if you can't buy them, I guess any reasoning that soothes the pain will suffice. ( And you can't compare a hardback with a search-able, tagged, light-weight digital copy that updates and corrects typos )

I do appreciate the opportunity to buy many of the resources on my "but they are too expensive" wish list for low Christmas special prices. I am thankful for the thought Logos has put into HOW to accomplish this. Any add-on collection has to make good sense for Logos (so they make it happen), for the publishers (so they agree to it), for other Logos users (so they opt in), and for me (so I get 'my' resources at **gulp** the price I did). I have no idea whether the final sales figures are going to prove Logos' concept to publishers and its own good judgment. I hope so. I'm glad others of you with very different interests than mine, and different existing collections both larger and smaller, were enticed into one of the special Christmas collections. Because you opted in for a different set of books, it made it possible for me to obtain the books I want at fantastic prices. I am glad for you and glad for me. And I am glad the 50%-ers got only the books they want at reasonable prices. Together, with Logos' help, we make it possible for all of us to obtain different books at prices that enable each of us to take the leap. (Welcome in, Ward!)
It's the power of us. Hopefully, together we are creating a large enough total buy for participating publishers--and non-participating publishers--to take notice. Thank you Logos for bringing us together.

When all was said and done The colleciton added 1331 books that I did not have. It works out to $1.50 per book. Not the fantastic deal of only $1 a book but I am still happy with the purchase and my new books.

I'm hoping Logos fixes it's website product pages soon; I tried reviewing their 50% sale to see what prices were to fill in gaps in collections after downloading the 2010 Master Collection ( http://www.logos.com/products/search?Specials=Featured&unlocked=no&start=300&sort=bestselling&pageSize=60), but the product listings keep showing me books to "Add to Cart" that I also have in my Library. It is frustrating to have to double-check back and forth to ensure that the page isn't showing me something I already own.
The logic might be daunting, but after the product pages are put into full sync with unlocked Library resources, it would be nice to have a filter that finds partial collections that you own and offers a discounted price to complete those collections.
Also, when looking at the product page for a collection, I'd like for that page to show me which of the components I already own--it doesn't do that today.

It appears that Logos may have updated the website now to reflect our purchases....the Master Collection is now greyed out for me.
I ended up with 1.85 GB of downloaded resources which totalled 1,294 new resources. That means I paid $1.56 per resource! Many of those resources would have been $90 each if I had purchased them individually at half off. I had lined up $1,400 of collections that I was already planning to purchase before the end of the year (but held off on because I wanted to see what the Christmas Specials would bring). ALL of the collections I was preparing to order were completely included in the Master Collection. What a blessing! There were other collections that are included in the Master Collection that were also on my future list, and as I am now discovering there are resources that I was totally unfamiliar with that I wouldn't have pursued but I am so happy to have (I consider them a bonus). [:D] This Collection has been a tremendous BLESSING for me personally, and I thank our Father for giving me the opportunity to add these wonderful resources to my library at a price that I could afford.

[:D] Nevertheless, I am personally very thankful that you took the pain to analyze this collection and post your findings for the good of all - a task I could not do for myself. That has helped me to discover this collection that I had earlier neglected in a whole new way. My attention is now particularly drawn to the resources on critical studies. This is a fresh new area for me. Given the sheer size of the collection, I am faced with the unique challenge of manageability. I am interested in insights from all on how to keep track of the resources, especially the critical studies, and make sure they are read and used when doing a Bible Study. Being un-chartered territory, these books/topics that will not occur in my mind to be looking out for them. Hence suggestions/tips from other users on on what kind of Logos Collections are used to manage them, what kind of searches are helpful with them, how they are used during sermon prep, how and where they are arranged in Passage/Exegetical Guides will be greatly appreciated.
This is for sure an un-forgettable Christmas!
