2010 Christmas Special vs. 2011 Pre-Pubs

As I contemplate purchasing the 2010 Christmas Special this week, I find myself having to choose between the Christmas Special and all my 2011 Pre-Pubs.  There is just no way I can afford both. I assume there are others in the same boat and thought it would be helpful for us to share our thoughts on the pros and cons of going with the Christmas Special.

 Pros

The Christmas Special is by far the most economical way to build your library. Just picking the resources that I have a strong interest in from the 50% off sale I easily exceeded the price of the Christmas Collection.

Having been a participate in the Pre-Pub program from the very beginning I have found that the majority of the items I purchased as Pre-Pubs eventually ended up in a base package or as part of some sale or collection at a significantly lower price than I paid for it as a Pre-Pub.  In other words, the Pre-Pub programs is not a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and in many cases it will not be the lowest price that resource will be offered at.  For these reasons I have been toying with the idea of dropping out of the Pre-Pub programs all together.  By purchasing the Christmas Special I will be forced to drop the “Pre-Pub” habit and this may be a good thing from as financial stewardship perspective.

These collections always introduce me to works that I would not consider reading otherwise and occasionally this turns out to be a very good thing.  We are all creatures of habit, we tend to eat the same food, sit in the same seat, and drive the same routes.  If we always choose from the same menu of our preferences our preferences tend to remain very small.

 Cons

I will have to put off purchasing some of the resource due to be published in 2011 until 2012, if not much later.

I may miss the best price ever offered on certain resources.  Not everything being published in 2011 will make it into some future base product, special package or sale.  If I truly want this resource as part of my library someday, I will have to pay a higher price for it than I would have as a Pre-Pub.

If large numbers of customers cancel all their 2011 Pre-Pubs will this negatively impact the Pre-Pub and Community Pricing programs?  These programs have truly been win-win scenarios for both Logos and its customers.  I am sure Logos plans on a certain percentage of cancelations in both of these programs, but if these percentages are exceeded on a regular bases, the Pre-Pub program as we know it will become financially untenable. I cannot help but think this would be a bad thing for both Logos and its customers.

These are just some of my thoughts to get a discussion started.  What do the rest of you think?

Exellent points Keith! God help! If it weren't for CP and Prepubs I wouldn't be able to buy much of anything because I simply can't afford the Christmas Special even though it is a great deal. I cannot justify spending even $300.00 right now with my budget. I am a cash only guy as it is.That being said, I HOPE and PRAY that the CP and Prepub programs and products are NOT affected by this sale!

I find myself having to choose between the Christmas Special and all my 2011 Pre-Pubs.  There is just no way I can afford both.

I just went for the Christmas Special because it is such great value giving me an extra 1,058 resources at a cost of $1.90 each including the Pillar Commentaries that I had on Pre Pub. This does mean that I will need to review my Pre Pubs as they get completed but as you acknowledge the Christmas Special is a great deal.

One of my reasons for going with the Christmas Special is that all of the Christmas deals over the years have been really good and historically they seem not to repeat so these are simply the best offers I expect to see for the included resources. I figure that there is a good chance, but no guarantee, that the Pre Pubs planned for 2011 will end up in a Christmas 2011 or 2012 Special so if I do have to pass I may get them at a great price in the future anyway.

The Christmas deals have been so good that I have sometimes wondered if I should simply wait and see what they bring rather than participate in the Pre Pubs.

    God Bless

I would love to do the Christmas special as well, but I have spent too much every year for the past three years.  I did purchase about $70 worth of resources at 50% off and will have to leave it at that.

I too am looking at my upcoming prepubs and trying to decide what I really need compared to what I want.

Another thought with purchasing collections over individual resources is that I have discovered books that have become favorites that I would have never bought individually.  So if I didn't get a package (platinum) I would have never found them.

I've only watched the Pre-Pub program versus Sales prices for three years but I have watched them very closely. It is very rare to see a sale price dip below the original Pre-Pub price. The inclusion in new base packages is a more common occurrence. Not knowing which titles may be included in future base packages, and which ones won't, makes it hard to decide on individual purchases. I doubt even Logos could tell you. These things just unfold as time goes by.

The Christmas 2010 Master Collection is the best offer we have ever seen. If someone wants the content, now is the time to get it. If that means missing out on some Pre-Pubs it is worth the sacrifice. A purchase of the Christmas special today is a sale realized. An order for a Pre-Pub title is a sale promised (that can possibly fall through.) Logos prefers real sales.

Last year I discussed "income stream" in a forum thread. That is the reality of finite resources each of us have to spend on Logos. Most of us have more disposable income than we realize. We can make adjustments to free up income or generate a little more. But eventually there comes a ceiling that we cannot go beyond.

The recent prolific boon of Logos resources has spotlighted the fact none of us can afford to buy everything Logos produces (maybe Rosie can??). The only alternative I can imagine is a subscription model. But how would it go over if Logos offered everything by subscription after you & I have spent many thousands of dollars for "ownership?" (Nobody really "owns" anything in this life anyway.) Logos can even market it through the Pre-Pub plan to ensure a baseline profitability.

I am sure Logos plans on a
certain percentage of cancelations in both of these programs, but if
these percentages are exceeded on a regular bases, the Pre-Pub program

A mass exit from the Pre-Pub program would hurt. I would hate to see that happen. I do still have my Pre-ub snapshot  (- remember that offer?) That gives me until June to prepare for the next BIG purchase.  (exception: Zondervan Bible Reference Bundle #2 )

I picked up just the best-of's on the Christmas list at 50% off (i.e. the ones I will be reading in the next weeks or commentaries on the next books I will be studying. And I'm sticking with my prepubs. I don't want to hurt the prepub program anymore than it already has been hurt by the glut of recent pubs, and plus I'd rather have the resources on prepub than the ones on the Christmas special.

Having access to everything (like a community-funded library) would be great.  Having sunk a tidy sum into Logos already, I'd have to go into attitude mgt at first--but perhaps Logos would credit me forward for the historic purchases I'd made.  It would be abummer if the subscription price was high--I imagine there would be some kind of graduated levels to it.

I hit several times today where I'd really of loved to have ZBRB2.  I don't see how I can swing that big pre-pub cost--perhaps I'll find a pot of gold later.  If Logos had wish lists, my list would choke their servers...[6]

This is my problem, each month prices on everything is going up, at the very time that Logos is giving the greatest deal ever, I am going to start having fewer dollars to spend on larger groups of books.  I did not spend a penny on this Christmas sale, and it had nothing to do with the sales, they were great, but I had to decided which were the resources I need the most to build the best study library that I can for the least amount of money, my desired pre-pubs win hands down!

Not because they are always the best buy, but because they will meet my study needs better.  What really has saved me was the chance to delay my pre-pubs until June, other wise I would miss out on a lot of resources I would really use.

I know Logos is doing a lot to help us, but I think very soon a lot of sales will be missed because the window to buy them is too short.

I might be wrong, but I think Americans are in for some big changes and they are coming soon, I am fairly sure it is going to have an impact on my buying habits.  I am thankful for all the help that Logos has been in my life.  The resources I have are beyond my dreams and the ability to access the information is simply hard to believe.  I have seen a new way of education come to life in the last few years.  I am thankful that I have been able to take advantage of it as much as I have.

I often find myself praising God for what He has done through Logos!

I can hardly wait for some of the pre-pubs I have coming!  I am thankful that being disabled allows me more time to use Logos. We are living in exciting times and as things heat up I expect to see more people respond to the Lord!

Ronald you and me are in the same boat. Too much money the last couple of years so this year I am being smarter.

I do thank God I had an unexpected blessing that enabled me to buy a commentary!

I've only spent $40.00 this sale.

The Christmas special is a very good deal if you want the build the number of resources in your library. A lot of my library was built on Christmas and other specials in the past. I already have half the resources offered by the Master's Collection; it just isn't worth the $2k for me to get the remaining resources, no matter how low the cost-per-resource would have been.

Instead I got the NICOT/NICNT Christmas special and about 7 other resources at 50% off. And I have $2000+ worth of prepubs coming up 2011. So that's over $3500 that I've spent or have committed to spend for resources that I REALLY WANT during the next 12 months. In other words, I have an AWESOME DEAL in progress.  I'm just saying...

I think I understand your concern; it's as if we were on the Titanic economy just after she broke apart and the other half sunk...and then said to ourselves "I'm glad that wasn't us..."
