Use of Psalms in NT

How would I construct a search query that shows where the Psalms are overtly quoted in the NT? I'd like to also find allusions and other places in the NT that relate to the Psalms that are not as overt.

I'm sure there's a chart already done somewhere, but I'd like to try to do it myself. The queries that I've tried so far are not working for me.

I was thinking of developing a "key words" list and working from there, but I'd rather have the completed results while today is still called today..heh.

Open Search and select Basic.
Select a Bible version which has a lot of footnotes (e.g. ESV or NET).
Select for Footnotes only.
In the search text area, enter the <bible ~ Psalms> to have L4 search for Psalms.
When the search is done (it will take a couple of minutes) you will have to page through results found in the OT, but everything after that are in the NT. When you click on the footnote in the Search results, L4 will open the Bible to that footnote. Then click on the footnote in the Bible and L4 will show the footnote Bible reference, hover your mouse over the pop-up reference to see the reference to Psalms.

Great explanation! One question - what does the syntax "<bible ~ Psalms>" mean? I haven't seen it before, and I want to know how to use it correctly in the future.

I got 4,865 results in 642 articles (7.45 sec) by selecting the NET. The ESV came up with 7,950 results in 895 articles (7.38 sec).

Now I can experiment with other versions, then get to work!

Beale's Commentary on the New Testament's Use of the Old Testament has an "Index of Scripture and other Ancient Writings (last thing in contents) which has a section listing where they find the Psalms used. I haven't checked it yet myself, but at least I know it's there.

Beale's Commentary on the New Testament's Use of the Old Testament has an "Index of Scripture and other Ancient Writings (last thing in contents) which has a section listing where they find the Psalms used. I haven't checked it yet myself, but at least I know it's there.

In my study layout I have a Cited By window (Tools/Cited By) set up to search CONTOT for the passage I am studying, so if it was a Psalm (for example) it would show all references in the commentary to the Psalm being studied. I do this by having a collection called "NT Use of the OT" (which uses title:"old testament" AND title:"new testament" as the Start with and also includes OT Quotations and Allusions and OT Quotes in the NT.

Also keep in mind that the NA27 has an ot-quote search field so that you can search just the text that was quoted from the OT. It's not limited to the Ps, but combined with perhaps a passage list of Ps quotes (limiting the search range to just verses with the quotes) you could search for repeated words used in quotes.

If you don't know how to do the above I can come back with more detailed instructions.

Note: This process was a little more involved than I expected it to be...

Step one, obtain a Passage List of verses NT quotes of Psalms. This will take a while. Open Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament. Export it to a new MS Word file (rtf would work too). then go through and delete all of the non-Psalms quotes. Use Word because the table formatting will allow for easier deletion of Hits that are not relevant to the psalms.

Then, save this document as a .txt. Word will complain about losing formatting, but that's ok. Here's the file I ended up with. Using it will save you some time.

Open a New Passage List and add passages from the .txt file.

Rename the Passage List. Click sort and Compact. Select all OT passages (They will be mostly Psalms references. The non-Psalms will be from verses that quote multiple passages) and delete them (select the first, scroll to the last hold down shift and select it, hit delete). You now have a passage list of just verses with Psalms quotes.

Open a Search Window. Do a Morph Search of the NA27. Limit the search range to your Passage List and the search field to OT Quote.

Now you can just search the quoted material. Since some verses quote multiple OT passages you will want to double check that your hits are just coming from the Psalms material and not others.
