The Psalms as Christian Worship: An Historical Commentary

The Psalms as Christian Worship: An Historical Commentary, by Bruce K. Waltke and James M. Houston
From the book description on Amazon.com: "This commentary uniquely combines a verse-by-verse exposition of the Hebrew text of selected Psalms with a history of their interpretation in the Church from the time of the apostles to the present. / Bruce K. Waltke begins the collaboration by first skillfully establishing the meaning of the chosen psalms through careful exegesis in which each text is interpreted in light of its historical backgrounds, its literary form, and the poet’s rhetoric. James M. Houston then exposits each text’s relevance in conjunction with the Church’s interpretation of it throughout her history. To further the accuracy of this interpretation, he commissioned fresh translations of numerous Latin and Middle English texts. / The authors’ purpose in creating this volume was not merely to produce a masterful commentary. Rather, they wished to aid in enriching the daily life of the contemporary Christian and to deepen the church’s community. Waltke and Houston here bring together the two voices of the Holy Spirit — heard infallibly in Scripture and edifyingly in the Church’s response — in a rare and illuminating combination.
Bruce K. Waltke is professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, and professor emeritus of biblical studies at Regent College. [Actually he is now at Knox Seminary --rp]
James M. Houston was founding Principal and Chancellor of Regent College as well as the institution’s first professor of spiritual theology."
Too bad it only covers 13 psalms, but the introductory material and information on how the psalms have been interpreted down through the ages looks phenomenal. Large portions of it are available for preview on Amazon.com.
From the intro: "Professor Bruce Waltke has been leaching and preaching the book of Psalms throughout his teaching career, beginning in 1958. His career includes teaching courses on the book of Psalms as a whole and on the practice of exegesis, in which he uses selected psalms as textbook examples. At the end of his career he thought it fitting to put the fruit of his work into writing.
I would love to see this in Logos format!
"However, Bruce is not competent to empower the reader to hear the church's voice of response. To his great delight. Professor James M. Houston, formerly a lecturer of historical and cultural geography at Oxford, specialist in the history of ideas, and pioneer in spiritual theology among Evangelicals, volunteered to write that history. We hope that our readers will be edified, al least to some extent, as we have by our interaction. Jim and Bruce respectively take responsibility for the history of Psalter interpretation and for its exegesis."

This does look like a nice addition to the study of the psalms as prayer.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I am glad it finally made it into print, period! I've seen it posted on the Eerdmans web site for almost two years, with at least tw, maybe even three, different titles and covers. And I know firsthand the delays were not because the authors were late delivering the material. The material was complete and ready to go well over a year ago.
I know it is a big task, but I would be delighted if Bruce could do a historically informed exposition of the entire psalter. He did the Christian community a phenomenal service fro generations to come with two volume set on Proverbs (in the NICOT) that was finished a few years, let alone the fantastic Old Testament Theology.
Bruce is teaching a one week session on Psalms at Regent College this summer. Summer sessions there are very open, fun, educational, and do not require a lengthy admissions procedure. My wife and I did one of the two-week sessions in 2009, and it certainly ranks as one of most enriching vacations we've ever enjoyed.

I know from Bruce that Eerdmans lost part of the book, delaying its publication which was originally intended for Christmas 2009. The lost portion was found in time to have it published by Christmas 2010.
