Spacing on Forums home page

Am I dreaming or did the spacing on the Forums home page expand over the past week or two? It seems there's a lot of extraneous vertical space in here such that not as many forum names can fit on the page as would be possible if it were tightened up a bit. Please do so:

Once you get into one of the forums, the spacing is tighter so the home page could be tightened up like this and not lose anything in readability:

What browser are you using? The spacing I'm seeing (running Firefox 3.6.13) is identical between the forum list and the thread list. I even got out a piece of paper to measure.

Sigh. I'm using IE8. I guess I'm slowly being forced to admit it is an inferior browser. I don't want to switch, though. I like the way it handles opening new tabs better. Firefox doesn't let you make the new tab open to your default home page (which I have set to Google). It always opens a blank page. That bugs me.

Hmm. That's always the first thing I change in IE: open to blank page.

But in FireFox, if you center-click (scroll wheel click) on the home-page icon (the one on the address bar), it will open your home page in a new tab.

EDIT: I'm using FF 4.0 beta8. Don't know if this is a new feature, or not.

What use is a blank page, though? You're always going to have to navigate somewhere from there. At least if I set it to my home page, which is Google, probably at least 50% of the time that's what I want to open anyway, so it saves me an extra step.

But in FireFox, if you center-click (scroll wheel click) on the home-page icon (the one on the address bar), it will open your home page in a new tab.

That's nice to know about for once I get a desktop again, eventually. But I'm on a laptop these days, so no center mouse button and no scroll wheel. :-(

Actually, I just discovered that Ctrl+Click on it will do that. Cool!

What use is it to load a page I'm probably going to navigate away from? (I got into the habit when I still had dial-up.) More often than not, I'm going to a page I have on my Bookmarks (AKA 'Favorites') toolbar.

I use the search bar more often than opening a Google page to start my search.
