ESV text - should LORD be Lord?

While reading the ESV today in 2 Samuel 7, I was looking at the interlinear and noticed in verse 22 that LORD is used for Adonai instead of Lord. Is this correct or am I missing something? There are lots of uses of Lord, LORD, Lord of Hosts, Sovereign Lord which gets a little confusing when trying to read the interlinear (when you don't know Hebrew.)

This is a correct Translation of LORD because it is LORD GOD. Ywhw with adonai....

It could be argued that the phrase should be rendered Lord GOD to highlight the fact that the word for "Lord" here is "adonai" (lord, master). The vowel pointing on YHWH - the second word in the combined title - tells the reader to say ""Elohim" - commonly translated "God". Which is how the ESV normally renders this title - look back to v. 18-20. So, I'm thinking this is a typo - all the other occurrences I checked in the ESV render it "Lord GOD" - but I didn't check all 293 hits [:O]. I've submitted the typo.

The Logos version is reproducing what is in the printed version so I doubt if they have any freedom to change it

I stand corrected: The ESV interlinear does show that LORD is adonai. This is a mistake in the interlinear as far as I can tell. The English text of the ESV is correct "LORD"

The preface of the ESV says this:

As is common among English translations today, the ESV usually renders the personal name of God (YHWH) with the word LORD (printed in small capitals). An exception to this is when the Hebrew word adonai appears together with YHWH, in which case the two words are rendered together as “the Lord [in lower case] God [in small capitals].” In contrast to the personal name for God (YHWH), the more general name for God in Old Testament Hebrew is ʾelohim and its related forms of ʾel or ʾeloah, all of which are normally translated “God” (in lower case letters). The use of these different ways to translate the Hebrew words for God is especially beneficial to the English reader, enabling the reader to see and understand the different ways that the personal name and the general name for God are both used to refer to the One True God of the Old Testament.

So isn't it true then that 2 Samuel 7:22 should read Lord God and not LORD God? By the way is that also a mistake in the preface when it says God [in small capitals]? Shouldn't it say lower case? All this is confusing.

I agree that the ESV RI shows Adonia as does the BHS/WIVU and the Lexham Hebrew-English Interlinear. So there seems to be agreement on what the Hebrew word is in the text.

I agree it is strange that the ESV has this as "LORD" - as opposed to "Lord" but this is consistent with the print version so I don't see how Logos could change this in their electronic one.

I still may be missing the point you are making! If so, apologies.

OK this search hits on 249, the first of which highlights the case in Gen 15:2. Translations seem split between Sovereign LORD and Lord GOD. Sovereign LORD is more consistent in my view. [View:https://www.blueletterbible.org/search/search.cfm?Criteria=אֲדֹנָי+יְהֹוָה&t=WLC#s=s_primary_0_1:550:0]
