Religious and Theological Abstracts - Prepub

I received a prepub notification for: "Religious and Theological Abstracts". I have a question before considering it. Is this a database that will be updated from time to time? Or does it cover abstracts over a specific period of time? If so what is the period of time covered?
Thanks

Good question, I was wondering this too...

Along with wondering if there would be updates, I also wanted to know what other journal were included because the product description page states: "and dozens more."
This is definitely one prepub I am interested in.

For a listing of the journals included check out the web site here: http://rtabstracts.org/
You can purchase 1 year of Internet Access to these abstracts for $45.00.
One 'problem' is with a few hundred journals covered and so few in Logos format, you'll get lots of hits you probably can't use. It would seem someone doing research would really want this tool along with access to a top-rate seminary library.

... In which case one would expect to have access to a printed or online version of a periodicals/dissertations abstract database.

According to their website RTA dates back to 1958 but who knows what Logos' prepub includes because they tell us nothing. I really shake my head and wonder what they're thinking some of the time. I think we can all agree that RTA sounds great but your questions all need to be answered before anyone spends even $1 on this. Seeing as they charge $45 per year for online access I can't see them giving us free updates in the future. I'd love to put in an order but not until they give us some more information.

And then this resource might be one they already have. So it begs the question, who would want this in Logos format?

I just paid for a one-year subscription to rtabstracts.org to check it out. The search capabilities on the site are awesome. If you're trying to research a topic and want to see what journal articles might contribute to your research, this is a great way to do it. Yes, you'd still need to find some way to get hold of the actual text of the articles through a library, but you get a short abstract of each article, so you can tell which articles are going to be useful for your research.
I have no idea what sort of access to that database Logos is going to be able to provide us for a one-time fee of $49.95. Are they going to just give us a snapshot of the whole thing as of some year (perhaps 2009 or 2010)? I can't imagine they'd just give us one year's worth for that price, but maybe it'll be a limited range of years. They do not as yet have a mechanism for time-bound subscriptions to things that automatically stay current with the latest data. Maybe this is going to be an experiment in trying that out and maybe they haven't yet figured out how it's going to work enough to describe it properly in the product page. Just speculation. I'd prefer to pay a higher amount and have guaranteed lifetime access to it, with all the most current data.
I have asked a sales rep to find out more for me, and he says "Your question is currently being bounced around the company..." and once he gets an answer he'll let me know. I'm guessing this is something that nobody really thought through very well before putting it out there. We need more info to be able to make a decision as to whether to order this. Witness the very slow rate of interest being gathered.

Just bumping this up after the weekend to see if we can get some Logos input on this resource at this point.
What period of time does this database cover?
Will this resource be updated periodically? What would be the anticipated cost if this is done?
Will all Logos journals, including those already released, be hyper-linked to abstracts in this resource?
Thank you.

I've gotten a reply. This is from Ken Smith in ETD (Electronic Text Development):
"Our license is unrestricted, so the first offering should include all the data currently available on the RTA web site www.rtabstracts.org. I would assume the years covered will vary for each journal, based on publication dates and how much has been abstracted.
"As I understand it, we will be updating the resource to include new data at regular intervals."
I would assume that "updating the resource to include new data at regular intervals" means that those who own it will automatically get those updates, because that's what happens now for any resources that get updated.
This is really awesome! I do hope they will make the abstracts link to the full text if it's in our library. Judging by how good a job they did on that with Catena Aurea, I'm guessing this would be a top priority for them. I would make no sense not to do so.

Looks like this one might take just as long as JBL to get to the 100% mark, and it's way cheaper and of more broad appeal. It's just that perhaps not enough people know about it and how useful it is. If they've not spent time in a seminary library with access to RTA in print, they might not know it used to be one of the first things you'd head for when doing research for a paper. Now having it in Logos, with an unlimited license, for this cheap -- how awesome can life get?!!!!

Rosie. and others,
Can you explain to me why it's so useful? I'm from a science background research wise and therefore am used to heading to online search engines (web of science, etc.) for abstracts and papers etc. Is this essentially the equivalent? It may help to give a run down of how it might be used.
Thanks,
Kenny

Yes, that's essentially what it is. Here's the search screen from their website (which only subscribers can access):
Below I've given a the list of all the journals they abstract.
Here's an example of an abstract from an article in one of those journals which you could find using this resource (I found this among 1335 results by searching for "technology" so that search hit is highlighted):
Author: Hutchings, Timothy Title: The Internet and the Church: An Introduction. Journal: Expository Times Year: 2010 Volume: 122(1) Page: 11-19 Abstract: The Internet is connecting people and organizations around the world in important new ways, changing the way we relate to one another, find resources, share information and form communities. These changes have important implications for Christians and their churches. Offers an overview of online activity, including websites, blogs, forums, social network sites, virtual worlds and online evangelism, and introduces theoretical work on the importance of online social networking, the role of the user in shaping technology, and the balance between control and participation in online activity. So if I found this abstract and realized the article would be useful for my research, I could request a copy of the article itself through my local library. There is no way I'd even know this article existed if I didn't have the search capability.
You can do powerful combinations of searches (which Logos's search engine will allow us to do as well) to pinpoint exactly the results you want. For example, I searched among all these theological journals for titles or abstracts mentioning the word "technology" in articles published between 1970 and 2010, and then I went through and selected the ones I was interested in and generated a report. This was the result: 3146.RTAbstracts (1970-2010) with 'technology'.pdf
Bringing access to all of this to Logos users is going to be amazing!
The next (dream) step would be to have full text of all the abstracted journals available to Logos users, but that would be much more costly and not even all these journals are available in online editions yet.
Now here is the list of all the journals they abstract:

It's an amazing deal. Normally you have to pay $45 a year to subscribe to this. With the Logos resource, we get to pay a one-time fee (in pre-pub that's only $49.95) for unlimited access to the database including all future updates, at least if I'm understanding Ken Smith's email correctly.
Basically, anyone who is into using theological journals for their research should be jumping all over this one.
I think the fact that the description page is unclear as to what years are covered and what the license actually gets you might be why it hasn't been noticed by more. Also there might just be some pre-pub fatigue affecting people this month since there've been so many pre-pubs shipping lately and so many more shipping soon.

Hopefully you are understanding it correctly but it would be nice if they updated the product page to confirm it. I'm in now.
I see on the RTA website that they rely on volunteers for their abstracts so hopefully it can be a win-win if they get more attention through this and more people volunteer to abstract journals, especially foreign ones. Then we'll all have access to more abstracts than previously possible.

This is true in nearly all disciplines, although most draft graduate students as their volunteers.

Actually, I accessed all their Scott Hahn abstracts quite easily. You can only see 5 results at a time without subscription, but I looked at the date of the oldest one, and then went to Advanced Search and worked my way backwards with the help of the Date Range. Of course, this works fine with only 10 results by one and the same author; for lots of results it might be slightly inconvenient...

This would be a dream come true for those who are studying theology in academics. After reading this thread, I've added it to my list of pre-pub orders. I'm not 100% certain if I will keep this, since I am not in academics or school (I only work at one). Thanks, Rosie, for the details of what RTA is about and the list of Journals that can be searched.

You have to have "access to a top-rate seminary library" to get hold of articles in the US? Over here, I can just walk into the public library and state what I want, and they'll get it for me in a few weeks -- from the US if need be. Last summer they borrowed a book for me from the University of Pittsburgh or Pennsylvania or something, since it was out of print and they couldn't find anywhere in Europe. Of course, if it's an article, I'll just get photocopies. The real irony is, that if I still lived in a university town and had access to a university library, I'd have to pay for the copies (not for loans), but out here it's perfectly free.

I'm in too.
As to why the pre-pub is moving so slowly, it would be helpful if Logos could clarify the page to explain exactly what we are getting. Hopefully more people would jump in then.

In the US and Canada, a local public library can also get us whatever book we need (even if they don't have it) through Inter-Library Loan, or copies of articles from journals that are at some other library. It's one of the few really valuable things that our property taxes pay for!

Within reason [:D]. A friend working on a doctoral thesis in Tibetan Buddhism did two things whenever the required pages to be copied resided in the Yale library. First, he put in the interlibrary loan request to have the section copied. Second, he called a laundromat near the Yale campus. [It is so tempting to stop here and make you guess the connection [6]] He'd ask the owner of the laundromat, who was Tibetan, to go to the Yale library and find the section for the librarians to copy Some laudromat owners are invaluable resources.[:D]

Bump
Are you bumping this thread to get an answer to the OP's question (I posted the answer I got from Logos above; see: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/28193/210796.aspx#210796) or to get more people interested in this pre-pub resource?

No - to help push this resource into production. There is helpful information that may have been missed earlier - I know I did. Thought it might be of value to others.

At the current rate of sign-ups and assuming no acceleration I estimate this offering will reside in Pre-Pub just slightly longer than Barnes Notes did in Community Pricing.

But even Barnes eventually went into production. If it is ignored, we know what the results will be.

Totally agree.
Brother Barnes has become the Patron Saint of Lost Pre-Pub Hopes. He is such an encouragement to those with fading hopes for any of a number of fine titles languishing on the lists. Let us hope this will not be one of them.

Glad to see someone bumping this. I've thought about doing so for months, but have never gotten around to it.
