Layout Names

Greetings:

Shortly after Logos 4 was released I created two similar layouts (NT Studies and Greek NT Studies), which have several items in common.

Today I opened one, worked in it for about 45 minutes. During that time, I made a change in the layout and then was called out of my office for awhile. When I returned, I decided to save the changes in the layout to the existing layout. Sadly, I overwrote the wrong layout.I could not remember which layout I had originally opened.

Now I have the same layout, with two different names.

My problem is, I now have to try to remember the 15 resources I had in the overwritten (is there such a word?) layout so I can recreate it manually. Imagine the problem I am having doing that, since I could not remember the name of the layout after two hours

Is there some way to have Logos 4 show the name of the open layout on screen? Or do I need to use a post it note on the edge of my laptop to remind me of the layout name?

Chuck, you might be able to get back your previous overwritten layout if you'd had it open recently. Check the snapshots in the right side of your Layouts menu.

As for your final question, whether Logos could show the name of the open layout on screen, no it can't currently. This has been requested multiple times by other users, and it's one of the top vote-getters on UserVoice. Go vote for it there.

I too have
learned this lesson the hard way. In
order to avoid this problem for the layouts that are dear to my heart I have
created backup layouts. These are layouts
that are tailored to my study habits. These are books/resources that I will go back
to every time that I am preparing. For these
layouts I will save an identical layout with the same name with a _Bak as part
of the name (example - Bible_Study_Bak). This layout is never used – except to update
now and then. With this layout/backup I
never worry about having to go back and recreate for hours.

There are also
some layouts that are short lived. They
are used only for a short period of study.
These I let survive or die on the
own.

A, not very elegant work, around is to drag whatever layout you intend to use to the shortcut bar and then delete it when you are done. You can alway hover over the shortcut to see what the name of the layout is you are using.

I was searching for threads where it may have been suggested that L4 show the current layout name in the title bar when I ran onto this tip. Thanks.

Sorry about your lost layout. If you have managed to recover it using Rosie's snapshot suggestion – good. If not, why not load the one which was similar (you did mention that they overlapped slightly) and alter the layout to customise it. Then save it under its new name.

In future, rather than saving the layout just update it (right click on the layout name and choose update from the dropdown menu).

Also try to give your layouts distinctive names which avoid ambiguity (to prevent confusion setting in [:)]) It's what I had to do! [:S]

I have occasionally reloaded the unupdated version of the layout on which I have been working when intending to Update to current snapshot. I have got round that as Rosie suggests, by going back to the layout where I left it and updating the layout I was working in to the current snapshot. I agree it would be VERY helpful if Logos would programme in an indication of the name of the layout we are in.

I was surprised when I noted that "Update to current snapshot" didn't leave snapshots behind. I understand why on further reflection.I would end up with hundreds of snapshots if it did. However, I think it would be very useful if "Update..." kept, say, the last 5 versions of each layout around.

Deleted layouts are still in the database table, just marked deleted. If you can't use a snapshot Logos should be able to help you undelete it. I don't mess with the database, except to look around, so I don't create havoc with the product or with syncing! I was a data analyst for a decade and I would not want people trying that with stuff I created and had to support. [:)]

A simple thing to do is to create a folder in favorites and keep things you don't want to lose, such as layouts, shortcuts, files, searches, etc.

I thought the Favorites folder just keeps links to the originals of those things, not copies of them. Just like in Windows if you keep make a shortcut on your desktop to some program and then you delete the program from its install directory, and then try to run it by double-clicking on the shortcut you created on the desktop, you won't be able to because the underlying program is gone.

However I just tested this out with a layout, and indeed you can drag a layout to Favorites, then delete the layout, then click on it in Favorites and it will still open. The only thing you can't do is undelete it by dragging it back from Favorites to the Layouts menu. But you can just save it as a new layout with the same old name.

So thanks, Jerry, for that idea about using Favorites as a backup solution! I never would have thunk of it. ;-)

Your welcome, actually my post is a little misleading because if you have a file such as a passage list in favorites and delete it in your files, it will be deleted in favorites also. But it can be handy to have certain things organized there.
