I had one question. Now that I have singed in, I have two questions.

I just joined this forum. When I finished filling out the online form, it told me that I already had an account. While this is simply not true, it is allowing me to post my question. My first question is this, is this they type of quality that I should expect from this company? (This was not a good first impression.)

I am looking to use Logos for seminary (I will be going to an ELCA seminary in the fall), and I have been looking at the books in the various packages. It seems to me that Logos has a theologial biase. I am wondering if this true?

I'm just a Logos user like yourself so take what i say in that light....

I'm not sure about Logos saying you already had an account, not sure what the issue was.

As far as bias...I don't think so....Logos has books from many different traditions...from Catholic to Jewish to Reformed!

It's up to you to fill your library the same way you would if you were buying paper books....you choose what you want, what you're willing to pay for.

Your Logos.com account (which you get when you purchase the program) is used also for the forum. That's probably why you were told that you already had an account.

#1 - If it be that one particular 'base packkage'' you are looking at just doesn't seem to fit, then try as you may to acquire a sales rep. They will do what they can to accomadate you in choosing a 'library' suited for your particular influence of study.

[i purchased the 'Original Languages' package for L2[hey don't you oldies laugh now] and have upgraded this package over the years, currently with the L4 package, have added particular books along the way that suit my own study's. Maybe this might be your chosen route,,,,,]

As a Catholic, I have a little different perspective on this than several who have answered. Logos struggled to bring out their first Catholic edition and it showed. [:)] However, they have worked hard especially in Logos 4 to make the program theologically neutral. While you will still recognize design choices that betray their roots, it is uncommon to have these choices interfere with what you need to do. Because there is a strong partnership between Logos and some Lutheran presses, you can easily build an appropriate library and very happy with Logos.

Welcome to the forums and welcome to Logos Software. Logos is a very good customer service company. Over the years I have seen Bob and his team bend over backwards for the customers. If you ever have a problem, just call customer service and they will take care of you. Also, there are very good Logos users in these forums so you can also request help here. Once again, welcome.

Logos for seminary. I am a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Naturally, I tend to lean to the right as an evangelical. I buy Logos resources specific to my calling which is preaching and apologetics. I also get books from other denominations. Do I think I cannot benefit from all of Christianity? I need to know where everybody stands to make a good defense. So, if you go with a high base package chances are you will get other resources that belong in what you might call other denominations. Some of those resources you will need for seminary work to counter in your papers. Logos is not theologically biased. They simply are Christian and support Christianity. They have resources for christians that cover all times. You will want some of those resources even if they do not align with your theology.

I've met several very wonderful Lutherans on these forums. (I am not one myself.) I doubt there is any one denominational persuasion that approaches anywhere near 50% of the forum population. I believe the Logos user base is somewhere near 750,000 people now. We can;t agree 100% on any one issue [:D]. The beauty of Logos is, there is enough space under the tent for all of us. Most of us are patiently waiting for our favorite works to be published in Logos. There were great strides made in 2010 in digitizing new resources. The future looks even better now that Logos has the speedy APT Book Scanner 1200. Watch it in action here.

Some will tell you their particular church is Logos' favorite. Others might say Logos dislikes their particular church. Truth is; Logos appears to be publishing the most in-demand titles and potentially profitable projects.

If you need help finding resources from your own "camp" there are many who will be glad to help. Especially those wonderful Lutherans I mentioned.

Please consider this is why you received the responses you received. Not -- that the "men" "just do not understand," whatever that means. A new user has purchased Logos Resources and is either using Logos 3 or the new and very brilliant Logos 4.

You are "exploring" as to whether or not you are even interested in Logos, are you?

Take a look at some of the Logos Web Pages. I think you will find more resources there that are scholarly that you could ever have imagined.

I have the Portfolio Edition, and it will take me two lifetimes to complete all the scholarly items that I'm eager to pursue.

I started with Logos2 many moons ago and the forums, well.....they have progress'd greatly, you just have to do a little 'click' click' work to find what you need. Ask the school if they have or prefer a particular software program, some use BibleWorks others use WordsearchBible, then others use none. That might be something you can ask a perspective Prof.

You can disagree all you want, that is your right and I will respect it. I cannot say why I think Logos offers nothing in terms of Christadelphian because then I would violate the forum rules. You asked me if Christadelphians are Christian and according to your statement of faith I could answer with a resounding No. Yes they have mormon books, they even have Islam books.. neither do I think are christian, but christians need to arm themselves with the knowledge contained in those resources to be able to give a good defense. So, from my theological view I can say Logos is not theologically biased. They are Christian. You on the other hand can disagree because your statement of faith says Christadelphians are the true church and anyone outside does not belong. That is the whole point of Christadelphians.. to reject 2000 years of church doctrine. That is about all I can say and remain in the forum rules.

The forums are made up of users not employees although certain employees watch particular forums either because of their position or personal interests. Primarily bugs and suggestions are monitored as part of someone's job. As a result, none of us have access to the data necessary to figure out why the system thought you were already a member. We can speculate on the most probable scenarios but that's we can do. I play the role of the hard-core logician on the forums so I'll spare you my speculation. If there's a reason that you need to know why there was already an account an email or telephone call to customer service is the way to go. I'd suggest email as the better choice as it more easily bounces through the departments to the person who actually has access to the information rather than your waiting through transfer after transfer. [Yes, I'm assuming that this is not a common enough issue for the front line CS employee to handle quickly].

There are several Lutheran pastors active on the forums. They are probably the best qualified to tell you how Logos would fit into the ELCA seminary program.

While I would not recognize a Christadelphian resource unless it said Christadelphian in the title in 64 point font, and while I can name a number of other groups that are neglected, I can tell you why I think it is true.without violating forum guidelines. Because the evangelicals were the original target market for Logos. I suspect they are still the largest group by absolute number of users and by dollars spent on resources. Logos has made significant progress in becoming more inclusive in design and resources - but they still need to make money. If you want Christadelphian resources, there are several things you can do to help it happen:

suggest Christadelphian resources that would have broad appeal and use the forums to shamelessly push them
get other Christadelphians to buy Logos to create a natural market
create Christadelphians resources with the PBB feature which is currently "missing in action - but due sometime"
get a Christadelphian house or seminary to partner with Logos to create Logos courses and resources

If you choose any of these options you'll have to give up your right to gripe on my harping on canons, lectionaries and multi-passage studies.[;)]

To me, your second question made it perfectly clear that you hadn't bought, but was looking through the base packages trying to evaluate and decide.

Also, to me, saying that you're going to ELCA seminary made it fairly likely that you're a Lutheran...

(I have to say, though, that the men here aren't generally this dense; they're generally pretty smart and pretty helpful. They must have had a bad day. [:)])

If I bought every Catholic title they have, it would still be far less than I have on my shelves (and I'm not even formally Catholic; I'm formally Lutheran). To what extent this depends on 'favouritism', to what extent it depends on simple lack of knowledge about books from other traditions than their own, to what extent it depends on the attitude of the varying publishing houses, and to what extent it depends on the user base, that's another matter, which I can't really answer. And the latter, of course, is somewhat self-fulfilling: the more they please their Evangelical user base, the less interesting it's going to be for non-Evangelicals...

There is one other factor that has not been mentioned in the discussion about material availble in Logos software format.

Almost all titles that are available from Logos are "owned" by a publishing house. Some publishers are more open than others to having their titles available from Logos. Some do not make their titles available in software because they see that as eroding their print sales. Some want to produce the software themselves. Some have become partners with Logos.

Logos can only make available to its customers titles that they and the publisher can agree to acceptable terms for publishing.

I am also a student who is an ELCA seminary. Not only will I share with you my experience, I will share then with you in the standard Lutheran law/Gospel approach. [:D] If you also read my posts, I prefer L3 over L4. You can read my posts on why I prefer L3 over L4.

Law:

For #1
I personally would not be surprised if you received this error message when you first joined the forums. From my experience, Logos places their products into production without adequate testing. Therefore, their new products are buggy. Because they have just released their new website, I expect that you have found another bug on their website that they did not find in their testing. I personally was able a product on their academic site that they did not sell on their new website. The bug that I found has been corrected, and I am sure that they will correct the bug that you found when they read your post.

For #2:
Logos does have an evangelical theological bias in the material with the books that they sell AND how the program was designed. Because several people have shared how there are more evangelical resources, I will come at it from a different point of view. Logos does have some good modern books based on good modern scholarship by old white guys like Walter Brueggemann. Logos also offers great books by old old white guys like Luther and Calvin. Logos also offers great books by old old old white guys like St. Augustine. If you remove all of the authors who are old white guys from Logos' library, you will have a very very very small library. As far as I know, you will not find any books by feminist theologians like Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, books by womanist theologians like Delores S. Williams, books by black liberation theologians like James Hal Cone, or books from Hispanic theologians like Justo L. Gonzalez.

Speaking from experience, you will read books that were written by old white guys, and you will read books that were not written by old white guys.

As for the program itself, I am going to steal a little of MJ.'s thunder. MJ has some great posts on how the program was designed for evangelical by the way it does prayer request, lack of lectionary support, and the way you cannot attach the same note to multiple scripture references. I will share with you my experiences with these issues.

Logos cannot handle half verses and non-continuous scripture verses that is found throughout the RCL. Using the texts used for the Easter Vigil for an example. The first reading for the Vigil is the first creation account Gen 1:1-2:4a. Because Logos cannot handle half verse, The RCL in Logos is wrong because it states the reading is Gen 1:1-2:4. If you happen to print of the text from Logos, you are going to read more than what is in front of the congregation, and it will confuse them (trust me). The response for the fourth reading is Exodus 15:1b-13. If you happen to print off this text from Logos, your reading will not start in the same place as the congregation, and it will cause confusion (you would think that I would have learned from the Gen. text ).

When you are doing research on non-continuous verses, you will need to run a set of reports for each sub-group of texts.

As I stated above, and as MJ has stated so clearly in her posts, you cannot have the same note attached to several different verses. Going back the readings for Easter Vigil, I have the same note saved 40 times so that it is attached to all of the readings for the Easter Vigil.

Gospel:

This being said, I use Logos a lot during seminary, and even more when I was on internship. It will help you with your seminary studies. On more than one occasional, I was very thankful that I did not have to travel to the seminary to pick up a book from the library because I had what I needed at my fingertips in Logos.

I do not know what seminary that you are planning to attend, but Dr. Hoffman at Gettysburg wrote a great writeup about Logos and BibleWorks: http://www.gettysburgseminary.org/mhoffman/greek/software/BibleSoftwareRecommendation.htm. I went with his recommendation to get the original language package, and I am glad that I did. I can also say that I prefer Logos over BW.

FYI(2)...I would also recommend that you hold off in purchasing Logos until you are in seminary. This way you can save a lot of $$$$$ with their academic program.

Just a thought or two from a "dense" male who sometimes misunderstands:

I didn't address the double log-in problem because I did understand what you are saying but don't understand why or how it happened.

My missionary parents took me to Japan when I was 9 years old. At that time there was a 6-to-1 ratio of females to males. (I don't know if this was a relic of WW2 or what.) All the people had black hair and were much shorter in physical stature than Westerners. If I took a rush hour photograph I could be accused by some of bias favoring black haired people, or females, or people under 5' 6" in height. In reality, I'm just surveying the general populous. If I wanted to skew the results I would photograph High School girls buying french fries at McDonald's at 7 am on the way to school. Or I would photograph the "salarymen" drinking in the bars on the way home from work.

Just because Logos has a lot of buyers that look different than myself does not mean Logos has a negative volition towards those who are similar to me. If I draw a linear depiction of religious thought starting at extremely liberal on the left end and slide towards the right to get more conservative, I would place myself quite a bit to the right.

Logos is not promoting the specific doctrinal stance of any denomination. They are just publishing marketable resources as fast as they can, selling to as many users as possible.
No bias, just good business sense.

I stand somewhat corrected.

While there may be some works of art that fall into the various liberation theology, there is not enough items by people who are not old white guys to do any type of research within Logos. Not having any of Schüssler-Fiorenza's, Williams's, or Cone's books available is a major gap in what is available for those of us who use Logos.

Thanks for pointing out that some of Gonzalez's books are available. Because Logos only offers (currently) Gonzalez's in Spanish, I cannot use them (I cannot read Spanish).

I am currently doing some research to see if Logos will help me when I start seminary.

Hi Patty,

I took the Logos 3 Language Studies (equivalent to today's L4 Languages package) in to all my seminary classes, along with the notebook computer that hosted it. Not only did I take all my notes electronically, in the language classes I could supplement them with copy/paste from the original language texts.

Chapman's NT Greek Insert was invaluable. I used its paradigm charts for Greek to make myself a chart (for memorization) that I shared with the Greek teacher--and I found out recently (about 8 years later) is still being handed out as an aid to learning the case endings--verbs & nouns.

I found Logos' Hebrew insert to be similarly helpful, though my Hebrew teacher already had handouts.

And having access to the lexicons in Logos that were specified for class use made them usable in a way that has lasted long after seminary. Where many pastors lose their language skills, I went in (& came out) intending to be able to remember right-click | left-click | left-click to get to the lexical definition for any word I needed. And that skill continues to enrich my congregation with word studies. Without Logos, you won't believe how much time you'd spend just learning how to get back to the lexical form of the word (if you don't happen to recognize or remember it) so you can then look it up. In Logos, it's right-click on the word, left-click to select the "lemma" (logos-speak for lexical form), & left-click on Power Lookup to get access to ALL the lexicons that have the word I'm interested in--& I've prioritized highest the ones my seminary taught me to rely on so they come up 1st in the proposed list.

Yes, Logos will help. Been there... If I hadn't had Logos, I couldn't have graduated at 52yo while trying to be a good husband & father, a responsible member of my church, be involved in ministry, & work full time---all as I went through seminary. It still took me 8 years, but it'd have taken me so long without a Logos that I might not have graduated at all.

Tom, I also wanted to say thanks to you for the link. I have decided to wait until I started seminary to purchase the Original Language package (saving over $150 made it an easy decision).
