Suggestion for passage navigation in bibles

When reading books I like to keep Logos on hand for the bible references. I really appreciate the fact that 'tab' takes me straight to the box to enter my desired scripture, and also that to navigate within a chapter I need only enter the verse, and within a book the chapter and verse. What is great is that I can do all this from my NumPad which is separate from my keyboard, using periods to separate chapter and verse, making it very easy to do while holding my book in front of me. However, to enter a book, I have to reach across to my keyboard, which takes longer, is distracting, exposes my idleness, and seems distressingly inefficient. My proposed solution is to enable a book-chapter-verse look up to be called by three discrete numbers. Hence, one would be able to access Genesis 1:1 by typing 1.1.1, or Revelation 3:4 by typing 66.3.4. I can't see that this would cause any problems or confusion, and would help to microwave scripture meals more quickly. If you can set logos to do this yourself, I would be delighted to learn how.

What is the situation in which you are flipping through your Bible? In other words, what reference are you using to define what passages you are looking up? Is it while reading a commentary, a lexicon, etc.? If it's a Logos resource, you're aware that hovering over the scripture reference provides a pop-up window so you don't have to flip? Or if you have several passages that you're studying for a passage, try setting up bookmarks (select the Bible resource, to to your passage, hold down CNRL-SHFT-#, where # is a number 1-9). To recall the bookmark just CNTL-#.

Chance are you're not the only one using your method of study. If you provide more information there's someone on the forums that has probably found a great alternative.

I'd be confused before I even started: my top Bibles do not have books in the same order ... or even have the same books - NRSV, NAB, NJB, JPS and the Community Bible which is not in Logos. 5 translations --> 4 sequences. It could work if the numbers were assigned to the books in alphabetical order but then one would have to remember the name of the book in the translation they were based on. I do like the idea of using just a number pad ... but I don't see a practical solution. I'd have no objection to Logos setting up the option if the user assigned the numbers to the books.

I always trust the Lutherans ... but then again, I remember only too well handcoding the numbers into XML and trying to convert the chapter/verses to NRSV with deuterocanonicals when I had the Catholic NRSV. You remind me of how much I appreciate the Logos 4 verse mapping feature. [C][:D][Y]

Like you say, hovering is good for books in logos, but I really mean paper books, so mostly commentaries and scripture heavy monographs, otherwise it's not too distressing. It just seemed like a fairly simple way to enable people like me to look things up without having to move my paper book out of the way to access get at the keyboard and then move the hand 'miles' around the keyboard to access those letters when everything could be done with a few finger twiddles - principally to minimise the distraction factor.

I do see your point. But even if the numbers were fixed, as per 66, people could still use the names (presumably that is what happens now?) since I assume it wouldn't be an exclusive method. But I think a lot of people would still learn the assigned numbers, even if they were different from their usual order - I certainly would if the numbers were different because of extra inclusions, or a Hebrew arrangement. User assigned numbers would be great, but seems a much more complicated option. Fixed numbers should be really easy to add. Personally I'd go for any numbers - Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, or even Ethiopian Orthodox (thank you Wikipedia).

Does this make it easier to implement? It seemed to me that it ought to be a relatively simple fix - which is partly why I considered it worth suggesting - though I admit to being totally ignorant of complex coding. Even so, it would be great that the numbers are already decided.

The Logos internal book numbers correspond to the order of books in the NRSV, where the "deuterocanonical" books follow Malachi. The order (and names) differ in Hebrew and LXX bibles but most people would learn the numbers quite easily.
