Vocabulary List

Is there any way to make Greek or Hebrew text make me a vocabulary list of a selected passage based on the words in that passage?

Hi Nathan, welcome to the Forum!
this feature is not yet available, but is scheduled. The link below shows the schedule (which they need to update)

You can do a work around will may get you close to what you are looking for by entering a morph search for the passage you want and select all parts of speech If you do this in analysis view you can export it to Excel or you can play with the column tabs to sort or view the information any way L4 offers to sort.

I would like to take the credit for coming up with this, but someone elese posted it in a thread a while back.

We students really need this feature put back in! I think it was originally supposed to be in late last year. It was pushed back. I don't know about pastors, but students studying original languages could sure use it.
Thanks!

I am not a student of the Word, but a not a full time student per se, but I totally agree with Dan. I was speaking to a friend just recently who is at bible college and this is a big issue that this feature is missing from Logos for students, and the suggested work around, while admirable is not seen as a great option. My friend says he now finds himself embarrassed that he recommended people to purchased L4, given this feature has been pushed back, and is still missing and he no longer recommends people to purchase L4.
Logos please ensure this doesn't get delayed any longer - (hopefully we'll get something more than just vanilla ice vocab lists given how long this is taking) than needed. When I hear people say they are in a position where they are embarrassed they recommended the software and they won't do it anymore, and there reasons are legitimate as in this case - its deeply concerning to me - I hope it is concerning enough to logos also - they might be only students now but they are potential future ambassadors of this software whose disposable income and book budgets potentially increase in the years to come. Don't let them down Logos. Make their day soon before you loose them.

This is mission critical for me. I am doing an MDiv and Masters in Biblical Studies at one of the larger seminaries in the US and have personally convinced 11 people to by Logos so far and I have only been here a year. Most of them have bough the Platinum package. We love Logos but not having this feature makes Logos almost a no-go for the Biblical Studies professors. We need to be able to quickly make vocab lists, visual filter based on frequency and do much quicker searches and tagging. Using one of the other software I can quickly generate a fully parsed concordance based on frequency for a passage. That would take hours with Logos. I would love to hear someone from Logos comment on this. I currently have to tell my peers about this major limitation while I am recommending it. Plus I would love to get that other program off of my computer!

While I have been known to use the CueCard software for the alphabet and such, I'm puzzled as to why one would want to memorize glosses for words rather than read, read and read to gain a sense of their semantic domain in the original language. And, yes, I do know exactly what it is like learning an Indo-European language that uses an unfamiliar script and is highly inflected.

We move into that in our intermediate level language courses but without at least basic glosses to get everybody on the same page these courses would be next to impossible to teach.

Wonder about Morph Search Analysis that is grouped by Lemma ?
Default Lemma sort order is frequency, then alphabetical (with Capital letters before lower case). Also can click triangle beside lemma to expand list of results with parsing and some context (along with clicking Lemma to sort by Capital letters then lower case):
From previous forum discussion, saved a Morph Search in Jude for:
@B OR @C OR @D OR @I OR @J OR @N OR @P OR @R OR @T OR @V OR @X
in my Favorites so can open Search, then change passage.

This sounds very helpful and I'll give it a try someday (thanks for giving the search string in a copyable form, not only as screenshot).
The alternative - seems that no one has pointed it out to Chard so far - would be to install the free Logos 3/Libronix software, which may contain nearly all resources licenced under L4 and will have Word List and Vocabulary list features. More info and vocabularies from the major grammar textbooks are free from here http://www.logos.com/support/lbs/vocabularylists .

I used to use the Vocabulary List all the time and missed it greatly until I found the Morph Search Analysis. Truthfully, this technique is much more functional than the old Vocab List. The old list would just show you the word and number of occurrences with no way to know WHERE those occurrences could be found. This technique can show where the words are found AND break the occurrences down in detail as well.

Michael, it depends what you are wanting to use it for....yes this gives you a lot more data for analysis work, but it does not allow for the printing of vocabulary cards, tied to a specific grammar, that a student in an original languages class may be required, or wish to use. Equally it doesn't allow for the printing of vocabulary cards based on a specific passage. No everyone will want this or agree with this approach, but it does not discount it or make it unnecessary functionality. The software is used by many people for many purposes at many levels of original languages usage.

This video was made by my Seminary professor for creating vocab lists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQtw46UCBOs&feature=g-user
Personally I find that taking this list then manually creating flashcards is a great step in mastering the vocabulary. Alternatively, I believe exporting from the morph search as an excel spreadsheet makes it quite easy to create flashcards in some of the iOS or Android apps.

Creating the vocab cards really hasn't been that difficult and we now have an Anki deck that we distribute to students. I am thinking more in terms of being able to do things like mark up a text using a visual filter based on the chapters from our text. I would love to be able to say highlight every word from Chapters 1-12 to show them how much they have learned in the first semester. Or to be able to highlight every word that occurs 1-19x to mark for students preparing for the Intermediate Greek final which words they are not responsible for.

Wonder about a Morph Search in Chapters 1-12 for:
@B OR @C OR @D OR @I OR @J OR @N OR @P OR @R OR @T OR @V OR @X
that could be used for a visual filter in Chapters 1-12 to highlight all words with morphological tagging (should be all words).

Wiki has Extended Tips for Visual Filters => Examples of visual filters includes Greek Word Frequency.
Apologies: not know how to quickly create a frequency visual filter other than copying and pasting one lemma at a time.

You could actually do that. Using visual filters, you can highlight specific occurance of words. However, you manually have to create the visual filter and you would have to generate the list of words. Thankfully, the work of finding the words that appear more than 500 times in the NT/OT has already been done by many others. Perhaps your book also has a full key of words from the chapters? Anyway, you can learn about visual filters here: http://wiki.logos.com/Visual_Filter with examples similar to what you are looking for at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/29653.aspx

I'm pretty comfortable using visual filters. It is just odd to have to go through and create a visual filter for 24 different chapters of vocab for a total of 369 words when a vocab list would be able to just click on and off. I've done all of the workarounds it is just simply something that most people are not willing to do. I really am not bashing Logos. I love it and encourage people to use it. This is just a small area (along with site licenses for Libraries) where Logos is missing out with the seminary crowd.

I agree there are 'work arounds for this' but not everyone wants to, or has the savvy to implement these sort of work arounds and this was just one example of how L4 still continues to fail to be on par with L3 feature set...yes it can do lots of other things but we are now two years down the track and Logos continue to fail to delivery on re-introduce all of the missing features they promised would be done. The timelines keep getting pushed out and are not even being kept updated on the website. What is clear from this discussion is that what is currently on offer doesn't meet everyone's needs, while offering some great new options, there are things that were on offer in the past that are no longer - and Logos promised they would be re-introduced in L4 but have failed to do so after 2 years of the L4 life cycle.

Concur; likewise wish search and visual filters could use vocabulary lists. For inductive Bible studies, being able to search for a list of words, then apply an inductive highlight would be helpful, especially when word list could be combined with passage list.

Louw-Nida domain grouping of words may be an alternative to a visual filter with one line per lemma.
