Performance issue with journals

Follow up: there's something strange going on. Highlighting some articles works fine, but others -- particularly the Book Reviews -- are slow.

I take it from the fact that several have read this thread but no one replied that what I am experiencing is unqiue to my system. May try a reindex tonight.

Allen I tried it on mine, and I bring up various JETS issues fine with no delay at all.

If you are on Windows, you may want to check the Windows Event Log to see if anything funny is happening on your system. Or reboot. That's the only thing I can think of....

The Windows Event Log shows no problem. Rebooting did not make a difference.
"Rebuild Index" completed in 2 hr 10 min (faster than I expected for 2000+ resources), but made no difference.

Noticed that in the BibleIndex and LibraryIndex folders, the file LibraryIndex.db-journal is 0KB. Not sure if that's as it should be.

The Windows Task Manager shows 13% usage while the journals are unresponsive (after applying a highlight). That's a single thread at 100% (4 cores, hyperthreaded), and it drops back to 0% at the moment the journal starts responding again. The process using 13% CPU shows as Logos4.exe *32.

I can't understand why parts of the journals are behaving like this. Thanks for helping me think this through.

There are -journal files for every database and you only need to worry if they are NOT zero bytes!

If it is certain parts it would help if Dom could know what they were and try those. You have a system that is more than capable and the only thing I can think is that certain journals have "large articles" which affect reading and display speed.

It seems to be anything later in the journals. For example in the JETS Vol 52, the problem doesn't show up with the first article or two in Issue 1, but it does show up in the book reviews at the end of issue 1 and any articles after that.

The Book Reviews are 'large articles', so you may be onto something there.

I do use highlighting heavily, so (given it's a problem others are not experiencing) one possibility is that it has to do with the display all of the highlighting. In case it was a display issue, I tried updating my video driver, disconnecting my second monitor (which is rotated to portrait), and even updating the BIOS. Then closed all other Logos windows (Power Lookup, Info, other resources) so this journal was the only window opened. Then rebooted and opened only Logos like that. Still the same problem.

I even went into Microsoft Security Essentials (the only anti-malware software running), and excluded most of the Logos file types (LBSLEM, LOGOS4, IDX, LBXLLS, LBSDRVI, etc.)

Still haven't pinned down why Logos4.exe *32 goes 100% usage on one CPU thread causing the window to go unresponsive for 13 seconds each time I apply a highlight in this resource, yet the problem does not occur in other books.

Allen, I duplicated it! Being at the end of the journal was the hidden key. Here is what I did if anyone wants to try.

1. I brought up JETS 52. Turned on the TOC. Clicked on some random part early in the journal - comes up right away.

2. Then I clicked on the Book Review at the end - takes about 6 seconds. I could then proceed to click on an earlier part of the book, and it hopped there instantly. I then click back on book review. about 6 seconds. So I ensure it's on the Book Review start, and I close the resource.

3. I go to the command bar, and type Journal of Evangelical - #52 and #51 show up. I click #52. It takes about 7 seconds before the title shows up in the command bar, then another 4-5 seconds before the resource opens at the Book Review.

4. I close all. I go back to the Command box and type Journal of Evangelical, this time I pick #51. It opens instantaneously at the beginning of the resource. I hope back and for the between #51 and #52, and #52 opens 10-13 seconds, #51 at the beginning opens instantaneously. The last time, I click #52 to the beginning of the resource, closed it, and then opened it again from the command box - instantaneously.

It's not highlighting, as I have none in those two journals. But there is definitely something wrong here.

I don't think it's just the length of the resource either, although it could be length plus tagging. I opened WBC Vol. 3 to page 502, the end of that book which corresponds to about half way in to the journal #51, and they were about the same. But I opened Liddell's Lexicon, 2027 pages, way more than the 800 pages that causes a problem in the journals, to the end, and it opened immediately.

This could be length + tagging causing a problem, or something. Not sure.

Make sure you have the correct version of the files from Galaxie's FTP site. There are currently two versions of the TLJ, and the problem is much worse with one than the other: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/16318/126850.aspx#126850 (the whole thread may help)
Turn off any visual filters for these resources.

I'm not sure it's worth a new bug report if it's down to the length of the articles. The book reviews generally are the lengthiest, and therefore have the worst performance. Some other relevant threads:

JETS 40 is still pretty bad for me. This is with all visual filters turned off, and opening to one of the book reviews (Fee's God's Empowering Presence):

I just did a file compare, and my version of JETS_40 is identical to the latest version on their site. I believe from the old posts, Logos has still pulled the files from their servers, as their were older and it would cause the endless update problem. See if your times are better with the newer JETS 40!

Allen, good idea on the reindex. And you're right I've not had this issue as memory serves, and I'm at the wrong computer to test it at the moment. But you might consider turning on logging and uploading your logs to let us have a peek.

Yes, that's right. Making sure you have the latest files from Galaxie is your best route: ftp://ftp.bible.org/galaxie/libronix/TJL/

Try downloading just one file that you know is slow, SCANing it in and see if it makes a difference.
