Wiped out of existence

I have been using the CIA World Factbook in L3 since there it has an address box which it is necessary to open the contents panel to navigate in L4. Today I wanted to take a look at Australia, and since I didn't have L3 open I used the L4 version. Much to my surprise, Australia no longer exists. I know that this was put into L4 before the recent flooding in Oz so I'm wondering why it isn't there. Even so, I'm sure Australia wasn't completely wiped off the map. Smile At least, let's hope not.

......Although a bit disrupted by the floods and so much pain and loss for many here in Queensland (also NSW and Victoria). It has brought out the best in most communities where people have done all they can to help others. Churches have some to the fore and provided evacuation centres, meals, work teams, donations and support for those affected. Many Christians have put aside their own flood problems to help others. Please keep the flood affected regions in your prayers as I'm sure there will be much ongoing trauma for many people.

Oceania is under the "Reference Maps" main section, not the "Country and Geographic Entries" section. I thought you were looking for the Continental maps.

Did you ever feel utterly foolish -- egg on the face foolish? For some reason I was looking for Australia after Austria -- DUH ! It's where it was supposed to be and has been all along.

This just shows that it definitely needs an address box since I would have typed the name in correctly. There was an address box in L3 so why not in L4?

Whenever I visited Egypt and was harrassed in the market-places - "Hello American" or "Hello Englishman" - I would tell them I was from Australia and they would start speaking to me in German... took me a while to figure out that one....

True, Australia is sometimes confused with Austria, which is dumb. But it does come after it in alphabetical order, so that would be a logical place to look for the map. I was just teasing George. Yes, things like that happed to me when I visited USA occasionally. The best (worst) one was (in 90s when news had been full of the conflict in Chechnya) when asked where am I from and I said from the Czech Republic one guy said: "O we are sorry for all you have to go through in Chechnya there." The most usual was that people thought I am from Yugoslavia (again, was it news about war?)... I figured out later that when I added quickly city of Prague as our capital, it helped... [:(]

Washington State isn't exactly known for fixed borders either. I had a nice address in Redmond, WA, and one day I got a new address without moving, and had to deal with all the change of address hassle that goes with that, because my street became part of the new city of Sammamish.

There's an old joke about the Vermonter who got a notice in the mail after surveyors had come by his property one day. He was told that the border of his property had been incorrectly surveyed and his house was actually in New York State. He was quite pleased with that: "Now I won't have to survive another one of those Vermont winters!"

Well, on one hand the borders of the Czech Kingdom have been the same for 1000 years, on the other hand you are perfectly right.

Some time ago I buried one dear brother of ours who had lived and died in the same house all his life and he had to change 6 citizenship papers in his life time. First, he was born as Austrian (not Australian [;)] ) than Czechoslovakia was established after the First WW. Than Poland came in 1938 and captured Silesia and he had to change his passport again for Polish one this time. One year later Hitler came and he found himself in the German Reich. After that it was Czechoslovakia again and (after the 40 years of the communist experiment) and after Slovaks parted from us and got their own country, he ended up being the citizen of the Czech Republic. He was always quick to add that the 7th citizenship he valued the most and that was the Heavenly one. So he moved there already to use his most valued citizenship... [:)]

When I said I was from England a not very academic Slovak friend (don't confuse with CZech Republlic!) asked if that was near the Philippines. I think he'd confused it with Australia. But how many Westerners know where the different countries in Eastern Europe are? And don't ask me any questions about American geography, or Asian, come to that.... When we said we were visiting Albania before the country opened up, the first question people asked was: Where is it? Then: What kind of regime does it have? Incidentally, when you're praying for Tunisia and other Arab countries in turmoil, as I hope many of you are, spare a prayer for Albania. We had a violent demonstration on Friday in Tirana, the capital, and another is announced for this Friday. It seems to be an attempt to throw down the elected government, and foreign observers agreed that the elections were reasonably free and fair, by violence. In 97 we had violent rioting all over the country, and I'm praying it won't spread. No more comment, as I don't want to be party political. But we do need prayer. (We've got floods too, in the North, but this is an annual problem and I don't think anyone has been drowned).

Thank you, Bohuslav. I celebrated the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, as it then was. In Praha I walked down Bartolemejska (where the infamous secret police headquarters was, where foreigners had to register and dissidents etc were interrogated) for old times sake, as I used to have to go there to register when visiting. And I saw someone following me, in the regulation black leather jacket of the secret police (for the information of the uninitiated - Bohuslav will know better than I do!). As it was the day after the secret police had been disbanded, I thought: "Doesn't he know he's been disbanded?" So I turned round and started following him - he soon made himself scarce! Past were the days when they chased me round bratislava with 3 or 4 cars and located me after I'd reached my friends' flat by entering the cellar in the next street, and left through the back entrance through a yard leading out to yet another street! And they had then followed me all the way to Prague. The girl on the train was sitting outside my sleeper in the morning, which confirmed my suspicion of who she was! My friend went to the station to pick up my bag from the left luggage locker. He said: "I don't think I was followed - I didn't see anyone!" As he was blind, that didn't give me complete peace of mind! For most of the Velvet Revolution, I was staying with an Underground nun in Slovakia. We sat glued to the TV each night, watching what was happening in Czechoslovakia and the violent revolution in Romania. They asked me if I thought Albania would revolt. "They wouldn't be such fools! And if they did, it would be worse than in Romania!" Wrong on both counts - and never happier to be wrong!

Yes Nicky, you brought many memories into my mind from those days. Sometimes I struggle seeing how young people take our freedom for granted. I thank God very often for giving us the gift of political freedom and help us to use that opportunity wisely.

Yes, our teenagers were all born into democracy and have no idea what their parents went through.

Bartolemejska was where foreign visitors had to go to register, and they treated us OK. But several of my friends, and of those for whom I prayed without meeting them, had less pleasant experiences there. As I was aware when I went there to register.

I know you didn't mean it like that, but just as information: if you showed up north of here talking about 'Lapps' you'd be only slightly more popular than if you walked into a black neighbourhood using the n-word. It's considered clearly derogatory these days.

And there isn't one Saami language; there's something like ten or so. (I would have thought a linguist knew that [:P]).

Actually there's some funny Pacific Northwest history on that ... a group of herdsmen left Finland with reindeer for Alaska. When they left Finland there were 28 Laplanders and 2 Finns. After the reindeer died and they hit the Yukon gold rush, they reentered the US with 28 Finns and 2 Laplanders. [:)] You're absolutely right re: group name and language. My defense is, if we confuse Sweden and Switzerland, Czech and Chechnya, should I believe I'd be understood using Suomi and Saami? But I do apologize. I did not realize that it was offensive and will avoid it in the future. Thanks for letting me know.

No need to apologize to me. To the best of my knowledge I don't have any Saami blood in me. Though I found out this summer that 1/4 of my ancestry actually does come from up there, so who knows? We might even be related. [:D]
