Logos on an Old Notebook

I picked up an old Thinkpad T43 (1.86 GHz Dothan/Pentium M Centrino, 1GB RAM, 40GB HD and Intel integrated graphics, Windows XP) and it runs Logos 4 quite well. Not a speed demon by any means but acceptable performance. Certainly better than my Asus Atom-based netbooks. I found it on eBay for $169--not bad for a five-year old machine that is built like a tank and originally sold for $2000+. Many of these old Centrino business-class notebooks (IBM, Dell, etc.) can be found on eBay for anywhere between $150 and $300. I will probably upgrade the memory to 2GB and add a larger HD at some point but I am really happy with it thusfar. Great choice for someone who wants to run Logos on a tight budget!

Now you have got me to thinking Tony. My laptop is an older Compaq with an AMD 2 Ghz Smpron processor and 2 GB of Ram. I have resisted upgrading from L3 to Logos 4 simply because I didn't think the performance would be bearable. Given your experience I may go ahead and give it a whirl.

I definitely would upgrade, Bob. I have an old dented Dell that's 1.6GHz with 1.5GB RAM, and it runs Logos 4 beautifully! I was quite surprised myself... but really I don't notice very much difference between that and my much faster desktop.

Thanks for the tip Jonathon. I am very pleased with the performace of Logos 4 on ny desktop but it has a Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU running at 3.5 Ghz along with 4 GB of RAM and a fast discrete graphics adaptor. It'll be interesting to see the difference between that and my laptop.

From what I've noticed Logos 4 is predominately memory and hard drive heavy. I have a Core 2 Duo at 3Ghz, and when searching for topics my processor hovers around 7-11% performance usage (via task task-manager). So it's not that process intensive and it only seems to utilize around 400-600MB of memory of my 6GB. I'd really like to see how much of an improvement using a SSD hard disk has over my current 1TB Samsung F3.

That is true Joshua but I still see a huge difference in Logos 4 performance between my home system and my office system. The only differences are the CPU's. Home - E8400 Core 2 DUo @ 3.5 Ghz. Office - Dual Pentium E5200 @ 2.7 Ghz. They both have 4 GB of RAM and the same hard drives.

I installed Logos 4 on my older laptop and the performance was so sluggish I removed it and went back to L3. I really don't want to spend all of my time waiting on the program. If I need the features of L4 I'll use one of my desktops.

A Thinkpad I tried to upgrade would not recognise a generic 80 GB 2.5" drive. So make sure you buy one that will suit your specific T43 model.

Since I do a lot of multitasking, I increased the memory on the Thinkpad T43 to 1.5GB. Logos and other memory-intensive apps perform much better. Therefore, I am planning to max it out to 2GB. The prices on off-lease Thinkpads are very cheap. You can get a Core Duo T60 or T61 for $300 or less these days.
