RIP Beta Laptop
Well I knew it was going to happen eventually, and at least it happened as we're leaving beta's behind and entering RC's and hence the gold is surely nigh. My beloved and long tortured (9 + years) laptop has finally given up the ghost.
I've beta'd lots of different software inclucing operating systems on it. It put up a brave fight - indexed for days on end and pushed it's 1GB of RAM upgrade to the limit. It has been through fresh hard drives and multiple repairs.
Throughout it's storied life the system was repeatedly dissasembled and individual components were re-soldered or altogether replaced. Notably the video connector was resoldered on several occasions before it too gave out. The Power port also was replaced; though the battery long since stopped holding more than a few minutes charge.
The evidence of years of typing and research are revealed in that almost all of the letters had worn completely off, I was truly typing from memory alone on a blank keyboard.
Yes 'tis true, my Winbook J4 that I purchased when my son was born by emergency C-Section is gone. Farewell old friend.
RIP: Laptop | Pentium 4 @2.4 Ghz 384MB RAM -> 1GB | Windows XP Home SP3, all patches.
(Now where's that Dell advertisement.....)

Earth to earth, dust to dust ashes to ashes, plastic to plastic, steel to steel, silicon to silicon. Now where do laptops go when they die? Oh yeah to the city dump! [:D]

George,
You should know better by now. Flowers are out and charities are in. Please make any donations to the "Extend the Life of a Laptop" Foundation. It's money well spent! [:P]

George,
I'd prefer cash donations. [;)]
But I have news!
In what can only be described as a fluke or a miracle, the system has been resurrected again! I wasn't getting it past the BIOS POST, but I'm running again. Though I feel this is probably just a rally before the final bits are processed.
Fortunately I back up everything so it's really not a big deal no matter what happens.

If it's not really back for good, then it's zombie laptop. Beware. I recommend a sledgehammer to the motherboard.

Before it wakes up and attempts to eat the ram of another system I'll probably pull the 12 Gauge and perhaps a chainsaw on it.

Hmmmm...Isn't the antichrist supposed to do this, too?
