Sermon topic help PLEASE.

Hello everyone I need help BAD! My Pastor just informed me that he wants me to preach on Sunday and the topic is very difficult. He want me to teach about divorce and breakups and the effects it has on the kids. If you guys have anything that you guys have done that can help me it would be greatly appreciated. Divorce? By Sunday? Goodness, what did you ever do to him?! [:D]

Seriously, I found some relevant content in "Illustrations That Connect," and "Discipleship Journal," and there's also June Hunt's Biblical Counseling Keys on Divorce/Single Parenting and the Baker Encyclopedia of Counseling and Psychology.

I did a simple children NEAR divorce to identify the above. Of course, this is just one simple way to approach searching on this.

my initial thoughts on subject were:

Thankfully Gods grace towards us and our children, is bigger than any transgression/mistake/error we make as parents..

I would be trying to look at:

Biblical model of family
Effect of sin on that model (consequences of our sinful nature/actions/desires.. )
The resulting (often unintentional) baggage/injuries we give our kids to carry around with them..

I think my thread might well be:

Jesus is the only constant, our fixed point of reference we need to navigate through the storm and come out the other side

the one who says give me that baggage (hurts/fallout etc) and means it
the one who can truly deliver security when he says I will never leave you or forsake you..
the only one who always keeps his promises to us
the only one who heals our (and our childrens) broken hearts,
the only one who gives us a real hope and a future..

Since this is such a broad topic, I would start general and then move into specifics. Here are some talking point that might help you.

1) What does divorce mean,to disassociate: part; cease or break association, separation, the antithesis of who the Blessed Trinity is: infinite unity in three diverse persons.

2) Divorce is cause because of our failures, brokenness

3) The high number of divorces in our society are just a symptom of a greater reality, the failure of men to find love and happiness away from God.

4) The spirit of our times is NOT the spirit of the Gospel but the spirit of divorce because our society runs away from the only one which can heal us Jesus Christ.

5) In any society the ones who pay for the mistakes of the most powerful are always the most vulnerable, when divorce happens the children are always the innocent victims.

6) Only the spirit of the Gospel can heal our brokenness and bring back unity in our diversity

7) Only the spirit of the Gospel can heal our broken families

Jerry, if you have John MacArthur's Matthew commentary, he has much to say on the subject from the portion on Matt 19:4-6.

While in the Matthew passage Divorce is not the point, MacArthur follows Jesus' quotes back to Genesis landing the reader in a gold mine of what God says about Man, Woman, and marriage (Gen 1:27, Gen 2:24).

You could contrast this to the ripping and tearing apart of flesh that happens when we pull apart what God puts together. The movie "127 Hours" about the rock climber having to cut his own arm just below the elbow could be somewhat of a real illustration; He survived, but lost his arm, and it changed his life

Yes, a very timely and vivid illustration. People do survive divorce, but the wound is always there. And sometimes it's the lesser of two evils. We live in a broken world.
