Not seen before

Question...I open L4 today and for the first time I saw these '??' marks inserted in this verse.

1 Jn.3: 23 And this is his commandment, ��That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

Rather than go on a search for the purpose I figured I could get a quick answer here.

It's an issue with a footnote marker or cross-reference marker being represented in the font being displayed. See if changing fonts makes a difference.

Just now opened my ESV to 1 John 3:23 -- but do NOT get what you get. Which Bible Version are you opening. I tried several, all the same as mine.

I get:

22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. ²³ And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. ²⁴ Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

I'm seeing this too, in KJV1900, using the Default font:

Changing fonts doesn't help. There are some undisplayable characters in there:

It looks like it's a glitch in the resource. I've got version 2010-11-02T22:19:32Z.

I searched for this character throughout the resource using Ctrl+F and those are the only two occurrences.

I'll report this to Melissa as a bug.

The first time I posted, I used the ESV - no problem...

Then, like Rosie, I used KJV 1900 -- mine was exactly the same as hers

Then, I switched my font to "embrima" - closed and re-opened L4, and still have a problem.

Now, I get this:

Peace to you! And! Joy in the Lord!
