Overwhelmed by Logos Bible Software

I purchased the Logos Bible Software right after Christmas and I am still overwhelmed with it. Where do I start? Any suggestions? I am in a bible study group right now where we are studying the book of John. I would like to use Logos as a tool while studying, but I honestly don't know where to begin. In John, Chapter 11...specifically verse 33 catches my attention about Jesus getting angry right before he raised Lazarus from the dead. I thought this might be interesting to study, but not sure how to use Logos Bible Software to study. Any suggestions?

Hi, Valerie. Start with the Logos Tutorial Videos, which you'll find links to on the home page of the Logos Wiki. Those should really give you a good feel for how to do some basic things in Logos.

You can do a search to find what resources in your library discuss John 11:33 --

Click on the Search icon (magnifying glass) to open a Search tab

Make sure the Basic option is selected in the upper right of the Search tab

Type <bible ~ John 11:33> or simply <John 11:33> into the Find box in the Search tab (that will find places that reference a range of verses which includes John 11:33; if you want only explicitly that verse, then use <bible = John 11:33> or simply <=John 11:33>. (EDIT: fixed error, thanks to Kevin pointing it out.)

Hi Valerie, welcome to the forums.

You can always type John 11:33 and click Go to get your passage guide info. That guide is a wealth of info to help you study. These vids that Rosie refered you to will show you how to tailor the passage guide to your liking. If you have not watched the videos that would be a great place to start. Some of the forum users have made videos that open up the software with easy to understand instructions. http://www.logos.com/videos

You can also do a Search on Lazarus.. or Jesus AND angry.. the options are endless.

I think Logos designed this product to help people get started quickly - see the command box at the top left of the home page, with the words lightly printed, "Enter passage or topic"? Well, just type in something there - John 3:16, Is 40:1-20, or a topic - Jesus, love, grace, Solomon, saved by faith, etc...and hit enter - then just start exploring the results that come back!

The videos Rosie mentioned are great, but this command box is the way to start for someone new to the product. Good luck and let us know your questions!

Just a follow up to echo Matthew and Dominick here. While Rosie and Kevin are right in that Logos has much more than the basics to offer, I would suggest that you start at the home page, enter your passage and click Go.

The rest will come as you desire to dig deeper, but start at the shallow end of the pool first and realize that the shallow end is still stocked with overwhelming levels of information.

Once the default passage guide and bibles and commentaries have loaded, start clicking and reading.

From there the video's Rosie suggested will help you customize, and dig deeper.

That's Logos' end. Don't forget that this is God's word, so ask Him to guide your study. And enjoy the Word.

Valerie, what Rosie suggests is great for doing the work yourself. What Matthew suggests is great for letting Logos do the some of the work for you. It depends on how you like to work.

Another way to go, is to simply type in your passage from the Home Page and let Logos open up a wealth of tools for you in it's default layout. Why not let Logos do the hard work so you can focus on what you're interested in? In fact, since you're still new to Logos, I'd highly suggest that option.

As you get to know Logos better, you may decide that you can get to what you're most interested in more quickly on your own, without Logos' help. In fact, just about everyone does. But I'd suggest letting Logos show you what it has with it's well designed tools.

So this is more or less "publicly available insider knowledge," but Valerie was actually wondering how to use Logos to find out if Jesus was really angry (NLT) in John 11:13 or merely troubled (NIV84). If someone doesn't want to start with a bunch of commentaries and interpretations on the verse but instead try to come to a tentative conclusion on their own before consulting commentaries, where would you all suggest he or she begin in Logos?

Specifically for your problem, Logos has a tool that help you access your resources on a particular passage. Just type John 11:33 into the Go Box on the home page and press Enter. After several seconds you'll get a layout that will help you to study that passage.

In particular, look in the lefthand panel for the passage guide, and then under the Commentaries section. Those commentaries should help you get started. Just click on their titles to open them.

In the top middle section you'll also see several English Bibles. If you read those Bibles you'll find that most of them don't use the word 'angry'. Actually, only the HCSB and NLT do. All of the other versions use a translation like "deeply moved" (ESV).

That alerts you to the fact that it might be worth looking at the underlying Greek word. To do so, choose the Exegetical Guide from the lefthand pane. Click on the word you're interested in (in the ESV it's "deeply moved"), and you'll get a list of links to Greek lexicons where you can look up what the word might mean.

2. Open up 3 or 4 translations side by side. Reread the text in each (NLT, NIV, NASB, ESV).

3. Word study. Find the underlying Greek (or Hebrew for OT) word and search for that word in a Lexicon.

1. May need to do a textual Critical study if the word underlying each English text differs (Example: Jude 1:1 KJV "Sanctified" ESV "Beloved" two different Greek words based on different manuscripts)

4. Follow up on the biblical and other references given in the Lexicon if possible.

I don't normally recommend simply picking the meaning which you happen to prefer for whatever reason; nor do I normally recommend simply accepting the recommendation of someone else; however, it seems to me that it is likely that you don't understand the original languages. So, how then is one to determine which translation is correct? Let's look at what BDAG (THE authority on the lexicography of the GNT when compared to others available).

I'll give it a try.

First, I'd try to be sure a textual variant was not the source of the two different translations. I'd check the underlying lemmas assuming that the versions have a Reverse Interlinear feature. If they don't I'd resort to Metzger's Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament to see if there is a possible variant reading.

If there is not a variant reading, I'd try to determine the meaning of the underlying Greek word. Logos has a number of ways to help with this. Comparing translations using the F7 key or Text Comparison tool lets me see how the underlying Greek word is translated by other translators. I can also access the original Greek directly and use whatever Greek lexicons I might have to help me better understand the word. I can also use the Bible Word Study tool starting with the Greek lemma and determine the various ways it is translated.

After studying the word in this way, if I still am uncertain, I would search the Bible I am working in for the lemma of the underlying Greek word. I would read the verses to see how the word was used in other contexts. I would especially focus in on any other places this word was either used to describe Jesus or was used by him.

If I had access to Louw-Nida, I would find the Greek word there and study the other terms within the semantic domain in which the word is found to see the various shades of meaning possible among those words and where my word fits in. I can do this directly from the right click menu in the Bible text.

To add to this word study I would make use of cross references in the text using various versions and using the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. This might point me toward other places people in the Bible were said to have felt as Jesus did here and what that might say about Jesus.

Looking outside the scripture itself, I'd first furn to a Bible Dictionary and read the article on anger. This might assist me because there might be a direct reference to this passage or there might be an explanation of how the word anger applies to Jesus' situation. I might come up empty.

Next I would check a couple of resources I have that deal with word studies or translations. Among them are Robertson's Word Pictures in the New Testament, Vincent's Word Studies in the New Testament, The Daily Study Bible (Barclay loves word studies), and the UBS Handbook series.

Having done all this, if I still had a question, I would probably consult commentaries, specifically trying to find any that discuss this word.

That's how I'd approach this question.

Thanks for all this....I am going to start digging into all this first thing in the morning. Thanks again for all the suggestions. This looks like it is going to keep me busy for a while. Thanks also for the screen shots as well. Im not too savvy on knowing how to do that kind of stuff.

PS - I used to read mostly the NIV, but lately I have been reading the NLT just because it is easier to read and to keep my interest. Don't mean that to sound bad, or anything. Its just when I have been reading the NIV for about 20 years or so, my brain can go into auto pilot mode and I might miss something simply because I have read that passage before. That's the main reason I switched to the NLT just for a different translation. However, I do realize the NLT is not as accurate as other translations....hence the reason I purchased Logos Bible Software!
