While it is unlikely that he ever met Immanuel Kant, he did become a professor of New Testament at Königsberg where Kant spent his entire life in the period immediately before Olshausen began at Königsberg. It might be of interest to understand the intellectual milieu of that time and place.

George, it's not only unlikely but practically impossible: Kant died in 1804, Olshausen was seven years old then and still lived in Bad Oldesloe. However, it must have been exciting in Königsberg in the 19th century!

It would be great to get the price down. It is already $45! But how useful is this commentary? I didn't find any reviews on the web. I don't want to buy anything just for the sake of spending money.

Those are my thoughts exactly Patrick. I don't like to buy anthing period, but that's not how it goes for me. This product, Hermann Olshausen’s Biblical Commentary on the New Testament, is a product from a different time and place than my culture. I love getting other resources from a different perspective than my own. I can get some inexpensive resources in cp. Olshausen was German and this resource was published about 50 years before WWI. It is indeed a different time, place, and culture than what we currently live in and I like reading those things that shaped the world in which we live. I cannot say how useful this commentary will be until I read it.

Most of these are simply mentions of the name without any solid information -- frequently bibliographies dealing with a passage. One exception I found which is of some interest

Ecce homo,

ἰδοὺ ὁ ἄνθρωπος*! (Jn. 19:5). It is exegetically not merely legitimate but imperative to recall at this point the saying of Pilate. We cannot psychologise this as though the reference were to "the closest personal interest of the Roman in the fate of one who had so deeply moved him" (Olshausen); or to "his contemptuous pity" (W. Bauer); or as though it presented Jesus as one who "was ridiculous to some and to others innocuous" (T. Zahn). It does, of course, depict the reaction of Pilate to the appearance of Jesus in His mock regalia after His scourging: "wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe." But the Evangelist does not make him speak of his own unimportant feelings when confronted by this appearance, but of its theological mystery. According to Jn. 19:14, when the same Pilate is finally resolved to deliver up Jesus, he will say in similar terms:

So while his views might be "specious" or "antiquated" (according to Bloesch), it appears that he'd be intriguing to study in relation to the history of some of the controversies and the development of doctrine.

I've noticed you have done this kind of thing a number of times in the past Floyd. Don't forget you are not committing to purchasing a CP item just because you bid on it. All you are doing is locking in the best possible price. Most of these items won't be ready for distribution for months if not years. There's lots of time to reassess your decision, but if you commit yourself to a no at this point you'll end up paying a lot more in the future should you change your mind then. I'm just concerned that others may follow this pattern if they haven't thought the process through.

Wow, so close to $30, and down from $50 so quickly. It must have been one of those things that isn't that costly to produce and didn't have many people signed up for it to begin with, so just a few have made a big difference. One or two more maybe, and we'll get it down to $30. This one might even see $20 before the week is over! Woot! Wouldn't that be awesome? $3.33 per volume.

It would certainly explain why the cost on some of these CP books is quite cheap. Lack of licensing fees probably helps a lot, too.

Having the text already available from CCEL or Project Gutenberg is actually not much of a help, since those ones tend to be really badly scanned so they've got many more typos that have to be fixed manually. A bigger determining factor is how complex the text is. Are there lots of abbreviations that need to have hover/note definitions put in, links to cross-references (both Scriptural and other), Hebrew/Greek text or other foreign fonts, lots of footnotes, etc. The resources that are made up of pretty straightforward texts without a lot of external references in them should be relatively quick to produce.
