Sugg: Add "smart quotes" option to Notes

When you copy/paste from resources into Notes, they often have smart quotes (curly quotation marks, facing different direction for open/close) in them. But any quotation marks you type yourself into the Notes are just the straight kind. So you end up with ugly mismatched quotation marks. Please allow the option of automatically turning quotes typed into Notes into smart quotes. This goes for both double and single quotes.

Cool! Of course! I hadn't thought of that. I should have. I was always using <alt130> to enter é in Word before the Ctrl-',e sequence was implemented. It was quicker than bringing up the Insert Symbol dialog. I still find it annoying that the Ctrl prefix method of entering accented characters is not universal in all Windows
apps, though I was pleasantly surprised to see it works in Windows
Explorer now as of Win7. It works in Word and Outlook, but not Excel (though I'm still using 2007; they might have fixed it in 2010). And it definitely doesn't work in Logos. That would be nice, too. I really don't have those <alt> codes memorized. Only 130. The rest I used to keep taped up on the side of my monitor years ago when I needed them. Now I usually just enter the accented character in Word and copy/paste it to wherever I need it.

Which of course doesn't work on the majority of laptops which don't have keypads. I used to use the alt#'s all the time to do various characters till I switched to a laptop as my primary computer.

While you're waiting .... I've stumbled across a utility called Autohotkey to automate stuff like this for me. A simple script like:

#'::“”

would automatically drop an open and closed set of quotes when you press the WINkey and the single quote button (Unshifted double quotes) You can modify it any way you want and it works across programs. You could easily whip up a batch of other modifiers to do the same for other symbols. I wouldn't be surprised if someone hasn't already posted a script for most of them somewhere.

Most laptop keyboards have an embedded numeric keypad overlay. You have to toggle into that mode somehow using a Fn key or something, but then you can use the keys marked with labels in tiny letters in a different color (789, UIO, JKL, and M -- corresponding to 789, 456, 123, and 0, respectively). Unfortunately not mine. :-( I didn't notice the deficiency until it was open on my desk and I suddenly needed to exactly what is listed here. When I discovered I could not I experienced a brief twinge of buyers' remorse - short lived though it was.

Now you know why I bought a 17" laptop -- it has not only a full-sized keyboard, but a separate numeric keypad as well. I CAN do it. I'm getting envious of some of those who have high benchmarks though and may buy a new computer which might well be a return to the desktop. I almost never use this anywhere but on my desk. Then, my daughter is casting covetous eyes on my laptop.

I don't have them memorized either (just a few such as <alt-167> §, <alt-0151> —, <alt-0246> ö, <alt-252> ü, <alt-228> ä. For most of them I just bring up CharMap.

Before I can give it to her (or rather, sell it to her since I told her that I'd give her a cheap price for it, but I wouldn't give it to her free), I need to take it in for repair -- my granddaughter used a nail file to pry off 3 function key caps when I had my back turned. She's a real stinker, but a real sweetheart too.

If you still have the caps, look on the back for a tiny plastic hinge, or perhaps an indent that clips onto a post.

If you very carefully line them up you should be ablle to press->snap them into place. I've repaired many laptop keyboards that way.

Unfortunately, for me it was a cat who removed five keys and proceeded to chew on the rubber backing - I discovered new keyboard were not as expense as I feared.

Don't forget to check Ebay for the keyboard if you need it. Cheeper from there most of the time, than from the shop.

Fortunately I bought a 3 yr contract from Best Buy when I bought the computer. I just need to be sure to "get er done" before it expires.
