Avatars

Are there guidelines or specs for avatars on the forums? I finally decided to add an avatar. I uploaded and saved a picture from my hard drive which shows up in my profile, but never shows up in the forums. When I go back to the profile it's showing at the location where I uploaded it, but everywhere else it's the generic default icon. I did a search and saw someone else had an issue a while back but somehow resolved it. He mentioned something about "gravatar." I have no idea what that is or if it's a clue as to what the problem is.

Not really an important issue except that I can't figure it out and it seems like it should be simple. It's annoying. Do the pics have to be preprocessed in some way?

Have you checked the size of the file? I mean not simply the storage space taken but the actual dimensions of the picture. I had to select a portion of mine rather than the entire picture. It may have shown had I not, but I have had experience with them only showing a part of the picture.

Larry, the info on the wiki on changing your avatar hasn't been completely filled in yet, but the key bits that will make your change stick can be found in the similar instructions (which are complete) for changing your display name: http://wiki.logos.com/Changing_Forum_Display_Name. Steps 6 AND 9 are the key. It feels weird that you have to click Save twice, but that's the only thing that appears to make this work properly. Looking forward to seeing your new avatar. [:)]

Thanks Graham, George, and Rosie. Rosie's link got it done. The process doesn't seem very intuitive to me, but then everyone else seems to have done it without a struggle.

Anyway, the pic I put up for an avatar is of my niece's 3 year old son who just happened to vaguely resemble Harry Potter that day. I love the little guy.

Great! I'm glad you got it working. I agree it's not intuitive, and I hope someday they simplify the process, but it's evidently not been a priority. This forum software was purchased from a third party, and they've only done a few minor tweaks to improve it.
