"Remove Duplicate Notes" Question

I use Notes extensively to add info and references to Bible verses and have been apprehensive about using the "Remove Duplicate Notes" option without some more details (and, I've seriously had "duplicate notes"!).

Scenario: I create a note, e.g.,

Cf. Num 25.10, "some stuff about this," followed by a hyperlink to a Journal Article

This same note applies to a N.T. verse(s) and to an O.T. verse(s) so I attach the same note to various passages, so, will "Remove" delete these identical Notes?

Question 2: Before I run it, is there a feature to confirm/review what is to be deleted?

Question 3: Since I really use Notes, is there a way to backup my present Notes, beside the Sync, so that if things go south, I can restore my Note File?

No. Remove duplicate notes only removes notes that are exact duplicates. If two notes have the same title, the same color/markup, the same content, are attached to the same location/reference, and are in the same file, then the second one will be removed.

In your case, your notes are attached to different references, so they're not exact duplicates and won't be removed.

Basically, unless you're seeing repeated note icons in your resources (see http://community.logos.com/forums/p/28467/210525.aspx#210525) "remove duplicate notes" will do nothing.

Pardon my paranoid, but is that idea of a backup out of line? I'd really hate to do something and lose years of work! Just my insecurity speaking to the "cloud" probably!

No, it's not out of line; a number of people have requested it (here and here, and various times on these forums). There is currently no such backup feature, though.

I understand. We took a very simplistic approach with "remove duplicate notes" in SR-3 so that we could have it done in time. (But we spent a good amount of time reviewing the changes to make sure it was only removing notes that are byte-for-byte identical with other notes.) Unfortunately, the simplest and quickest thing to do was to permanently delete the duplicates that were detected.

One possible enhancement would be for us to create a new Notes file called "Duplicate Notes", put the duplicates there, and then you could review them before deciding whether to delete the whole file permanently. I can't promise that we'll add that improvement, but if you are "paranoid" you may just wish to wait until an enhancement like that (or an "undo" feature or something else) is added, or until you've seen enough other users posting here about it running successfully that you feel confident in running it.

Bradley, thanks for your good insights here. I'm very much liking the "new file" that's reviewable or an Undo for that "just in case" situation. I'm most happy to wait . . .
