L4mac training manuals from MP

Has anyone purchased 1 or both of these manuals? ...and how did they work for you?

Also, did anyone else "pre-pub" the L4mac training manuals (vol 1&2) and if so does anyone (yeah I'm really grilling poor "anyone") know a more concrete release date? The sun is beginning to set on Mid-October.

btw don't let the pre-pub price get anyone too excited. There was $12 s&h (and I guess tax) tacked on and that was to Missouri.

... now that I think of it, this isn't necessarily produced by Logos and its a physical item. I'm used to not having tax and often shipping added on to most Logos resources.

I just ordered them yesterday under the pre-pub special (both volumes plus KB shortcut card) for $50 plus the outrageous shipping cost of $12. I hope they end up being useful and not just something else that sits on my bookshelf.

I've got them right here and you're right; Its kind of like a phone book. Its got all the numbers to everyone in your city but it's not the best tool if you want to meet someone new. If I have a question about a certain topic I'll consult it but as far as teaching me new tips and tricks, I would have to read it cover to cover... and I just don't have the time.

That seems lazy of me.

To make a long story short, its got great potential if you know what you're looking for. I seem to stumble on new features in Logos.

I can relate to what your saying. I know and thus use a very small percentage of what Logos has and is capable of doing. I don't own any manuals or videos, and have not attended any training sessions. I would like to have training to fulfill two different purposes. The first is when I have a question about how do I do something, and the second is I would like something that shows me different things that Logos can do, that I probably wouldn't even think about.

But, so far I haven't taken the $$$$$$ plunge.

Pre-pub has Camp Logos Live DVD's with estimated ship date of 18 Apr 2011.

Noticed on http://www.mpseminars.com/shop/logos-training/ that Camp Logos 2 Live DVD's are coming soon.

But, so far I haven't taken the $$$ plunge.

Sorry James, just now saw your question. Pretty much been sitting on the shelf due to the fact that because of the poor performance of Logos 4 on the Mac I decided to give Accordance a try and have been very pleased so far, at least I can get some serious study done with exceptional and stable performance. I still have Logos because of the investment I already had in it but it's use is secondary for now and just for the use of certain resources in my studies. I used to always brag about Logos and how awesome it was, the best on the Market for Bible study. Unfortunately current design and business decisions have caused me to lose much of my enthusiasm especially since switching to the Mac platform. Hopefully they can recover and get back on track soon.

You could always look at the free training videos provided by Mark Barnes at http://www.logos4training.com/videos/ . He is a PC, but practically everything is adaptable to the Mac version. I say practically everything, because we have a couple of things that are not yet implemented.

Just to put things in perspective here. My experience is just the opposite. Since I have become better acquainted with L4 (Windows AND Mac versions), Accordance has been relegated to secondary status in my Bible Study.

When I read complaints of L4 being slow (have heard this complaint on both Mac and Windows versions), I think I must have a very different viewpoint. I remember Bible Study with an IBM Selectric II, a mimeograph machine, and rows of dead tree books that altogether made up less than 1% of my current L4 library. Any Bible software is lightening fast in comparison.

What version of Accordance are you using? There is no way you can convince me that Logos is as fast as Accordance. When I do a search all I get no spinning balls as I wait for things to complete, no, I get a listing of references and resources in seconds. I mouse over a word and it is instantly displayed in the info window or in association with any other language texts I have open. All commentaries scroll in sync without hesitation, in a nutshell it just all works and works lightning fast. I cannot say the same for Logos and unless you have some super machine that no one else has you cannot say the same either, the program is just not there yet.

Nowhere have I ever said that L4 is faster than Accordance. Where did you get that impression? Speed is not the single most important element in Bible Study. The breadth of results is far more important.

You have been using this forum to criticize Logos and promote Accordance for some time now, and I thought it was time for someone to state a different perspective. I am a bit weary of a few Accordance users who join the Logos forum to offer nothing but criticism for L4 and praise for Accordance. It's kind of like going into McDonalds carrying a sign proclaiming "Burger King tastes better." If you prefer Accordance, then use it, but stop using Logos' forums to persuade others to switch. If that is not your intention, I apologize for my erroneous assumption, but I am simply going by appearances.

I began using Accordance long before it was Accordance. I have faithfully purchased ever upgrade up to and including Accordance 9. For a long time I considered the two applications to be about equal, and had a slight preference for Accordance. In fact, several months ago, I was accused of using Logos' company forum to promote Accordance. With the advent of Logos 4 and Accordance 9, Logos moved ahead.

Granted, L4 Mac has problems, but there have been remarkable improvements. (Well up to 4.3 Beta 1 anyway).

I have been a Logos user for over a decade and thought it was far superior on the Windows platform to anything else available but since moving away from Windows and into OSx the experience and my enthusiasm have soured. I don't care what excuses loyal fans try to use there is no excuse for the way this version and it's release were handled. I don't mean to appear to be promoting another product I am just trying to state my experience by comparison. If Logos had not done this to me I would never have even considered expending the extra cost to go to another platform but they left me no choice as their promises of performance and completion just continue to carry on. How much patience are we supposed to have. Maybe there are things about logos you use and find superior that I don't, maybe your level of expertise with both products gives you an insight I don't see, but for my use both products accomplish the same thing and one is doing it much better than the other at this time so which one do you think is going to be my preferred product? right, the one that works. Maybe someday my old favorite will again take the top spot but they have a lot of work to do yet to earn back my confidence and money.

In that case, L4 Mac 4.2a SR-3 is quite stable and usable, except for Notes which can be rather irritating.

I know the Logos logo under my name really means I should keep this short since it'll probably be seen as totally biased. However, my genuine interest in seeing people make the most of their investments urges me to weigh in.

In many areas of life, I'm all about taking a little extra care to maximize my major investments. That's why I have a high-quality leather cover on my macbook pro, use a top-tier meguiars wax and ocillating buffer to protect my truck's paint, etc. I'm very frugal...which is why I try to make the most of my investments by safeguarding them against waste.

Logos 4 is no different.

Let me urge you to consider what kind of learner you are and either get one of these manuals or the Camp Logos DVD while it's still at pre-pub price (until the 18th, I believe). Both of these will be great investments because they allow you to go back over the material whenever you want and in any order. Both will allow you to do things you never knew you could do with Logos. I work here and still find incredible functionality I had NO idea existed in my software! In fact, I'm about to get the DVDs myself (they're professionally recorded full-length camp logos sessions; and I've seen many MVPs and power users say they still learn great things about Logos 4 from attending).

For what it's worth, I recommend you check out the Facebook Like-a-thon sales...there's a great discount there on something that just might interest you...

Thanks for your reply. I couldn't agree more with what you said. I do have a sizable investment in LOGOS, platinum plus several additional resources and would like to maximize the usefulness of my investment. My question is what would be the value of:

1. The manuals over the DVD

2. The DVD over the manuals

3. Having both the manuals and DVD

Just realized I had neglected to respond to you! Since I wrote you on my own time and from home, I didn't make a good mental note of responding. Sorry!

Understand that the following is entirely based on personal preference and learning style. If I were making the decision, I would definitely go with the DVDs first...I'm much more of an interactive and visual learner. Given that even power users and forum MVPs come back from Camp Logos (and the DVDs provide exactly the same content as attending camp logos in person), I think the investment would be well worth the money. In fact, I think their value would exceed attending the actual camps because you can always pause, re-watch, skip around, etc. And you can always come back later for a quick refresher!

At the same time, the manuals are a great reference if you want to quickly look something up in particular, highlight, comment, etc. And with them being on sale through tomorrow on Facebook at a great price, they might be worth grabbing along with the DVDs.

Again, this all really comes down to determining how you like to learn. I would just recommend making sure you get the right resources to get the most out of your time in the Word!
