Unable to Download Purchased Resources

I have already written about this but wanted to emphasize the importance. I am unable to download any resources since the last beta download. I have purchased some additional resources from Logos (about 1 GB) that I need to access and am unable to download them. This is a significant issue for me and really need to know what to do so I can use them. I have tried all the suggestions people have made with no avail. Attached are my logs. Thanks!

Observation: Logos forums primarily for Logos user interaction. One MVP meaning is Many Volunteer Posts. Logos offers technical support primarily for Stable version (email and phone).

Since running 4.3 Beta 1, Logos may move this thread to Mac Beta forum (could have replied to Failed Updates instead of starting a new post, contextually more challenging to review " I have tried all the suggestions people have made with no avail.")

Option: can open Indexer.log file while downloads are in progress; by default file scrolls automatically as lines are written.

Indexer.log file shows over 400 resources to download. Suggest watching network download with Activity Monitor; when nothing downloading, can click on blue Logos icon in menu bar to cancel downloading, which starts resource discovery and incremental indexing. May need to restart Logos 4 and/or Mac (possibly several times) to process all downloads, followed by indexing.

Logos 4 Beta Program page includes information and risks (e.g. Beta may be Buggy). Anticipating Logos 4.3 Beta 2 release in a few days (almost 2 weeks since Wed 22 Mar). From past Alpha and Beta releases, know fixing some bugs happens several releases later. Since a stable Logos 4 Mac version is available, noticing some Beta bugs take longer for resolution.

Edit: Recognizing Beta bugginess is not for everyone, if want to downgrade to Stable version, Wiki has Uninstalling and Reinstalling in Logos 4 Mac that includes all application files to delete plus Reset Logos 4 User Files has steps to reset local user settings (files) without re-download of resources. Copy Logos 4 Resources to Mac OS X (Supported – saves resource downloading) step 2 has link to current Stable Logos 4 Mac disk images for installation.

Hi David,

Just following up on KS4J's response and highlighting the dangers of using Beta software for critical work.

The reason that I have steered clear of the Beta is the warning made by the developers that now there is a stable version bugs in the Beta may not be sorted quickly.

If you do need to use these materials then the safest thing to do is to get yourself back on the stable channel and leave the Beta testing to those who have a spare machine to play with it on.

I know this will be a bit of a pain but once you are on the stable channel then you can safely stay there in the knowledge that you can call on Logos for support and that any bugs will in deed be treated with a matter of urgency.

Beta testing is not for the faint hearted nor those with time constraints.

My procedure works for those with two machines—or it could work via Time Machine. I loaded 4.2a SR-3 on my laptop (with Update Channel set to Stable) to be very safe and then 4.3 Beta 1 on my Mac Pro (desktop). When the Beta became unusable for me, I copied all L4 files from the laptop to the desktop and am now happily running the stable version on both.

Alternatively on a single Mac, you could install the stable version and run Time Machine for a complete backup. Then, if the Beta proved unusable, restore the stable from the backup. Be sure you note the time of the backup, so you can find it easily.

In either case, you will need to restore Logos Bible Software 4 in the Applications folder and files in Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Logos4. I replaced the entire folder from the laptop which is probably overkill. I forgot to replace com.logos.Logos_Bible_Software_4.plist in the Preferences folder, but that only required that I log in or the first startup.

Now, I am no longer frustrated and irritated. Will I jump back into the Beta cycle with Beta 2? Probably, I'm too old to take up sky diving, so I'll limit my "living dangerously" to the L4 Mac Beta Program. [:D]

Another option for a single Mac is bootable partitions. Currently have Logos 4 Mac Stable release installed on internal hard drive partition. On external hard drive, have latest Logos 4 Mac Beta release installed. Holding option key while Mac boots up provides menu to choose bootable partitions.

The warning was that at some time in the future developments in the Beta fork might require a restructuring of these files. If this is done you will be able to revert to the Stable version but your files will be unusable.

I don't know the possible consequences of downloading what would appear to be unreadable files into the then stable channel and re-syncing them to the cloud.

As far as I know the developers have there work cut out getting things working the way they should and have left new developments to one side for now. However it is only a matter of time before they start optimising file structures or developing new formats and at that time I think your system will run into trouble.

Have you tried to download the resources by hand, then use the scan command?

If that doesn't work, your best solution (IMHO) is to get off the beta (i.e. a complete reinstall of the release version, saving the downloaded resources if you have the disk, and using the scan command to get those resources back into Logos)... a long process.

You may be correct for future betas, but I was the frustrated user at this point. Now, I am a happy camper. Hopefully, future betas will not be a bug-filled as this one.

In which case, the user would have not choice but to reinstall the Beta—perhaps from scratch (does from scratch translate into Scottish? [8-|]). That would not be a very pleasant experience for an already frustrated user.

WARNING: Use my advice with caution. I personally am still in Beta. The Developer (God) is still working on me. [^o)] This procedure got me out of this mess, but it may just make things worse under different circumstances.
