Advice on Upgrading

Hey everyone

I am in the blessed position to have some money that I can spend on some more books for my Logos library. I currently have the Leader's Library and 1-2 volumes of the Baker, as well as Pillar commentary series. However I am really not sure as to what I should buy so I'd be interested in your opinions.

I am basically looking into two options.

1)Either I upgrade to the Scholar's Silver and complete my Baker/Pillar sets

2) Buy the NICNT/NICOT series.

I am a student at a seminary, teach small group Bible studies and preach about once a month. (I thoroughly enjoy exegesis.) Ancient languages are not my strong point, nor a particular interest, besides NT Greek.

If anyone would be able to provide some insight with this regard that would be great! At this point in time I really don't know which option is better, both sound incredibly sweet.

The leaders library to Scholars silver library jump is really quite significant. But then again so is the NIC set.

You my friend are between Scylla and Charybdis.

I would think that if you are looking to increase your frequency of preaching soon go for NIC, otherwise if broader use and bible study are desired go for the upgrade. Either way take time to go through the differences on the upgrade page to look at each title. http://www.logos.com/upgrade

Thank you, that was helpful. I was thinking along the same lines, and I will definitely go the through the lists, paying attention to each upgrade.

If you had a higher level package, I might agree that you have something of a dilemma, but considering the fact that you are at the low end of the spectrum of packages, I would recommend that you upgrade your package.

QUERY: How can you be interested in exegesis and not have any interest in the original languages? Brush up your Hebrew and Greek. Latin would also be helpful.

I suppose I have no other excuse besides laziness. I have found good commentaries that have helped me around the obvious language barrier, although I know that that is not a substitute to actually being able to read and study it yourself.

The operative and well worn phrase is akin to:

"reading the bible in translation is like kissing your bride through her veil."

I have next to no proficiency in Hebrew (none in Latin aside from Google translate) but I do agree with George, [:O] it is worth it to take time to learn the language.

Well after having another look over the books that come with the upgrade, I realized that indeed many amazing titles would be the joining the ranks of my library, especially concerning preaching (and ancient languages [H]), besides obviously decent commentaries such as the NAC.

One last question, while we're at it; is the "Preacher's Commentary" worth anything? I've been reading mixed responses. I am fairly new to preaching in general, and am looking for helpful titles to aid me in my preaching.

from the Logos Upgrade page you will see, that nearly all the resources of the preaching/teaching section, and a numer of those relevant to NT Greek and Exegesis, come with the Scholar packages. In my opinion, there is really worth in this. And even if NICOT/NICNT resources are often ranked top-place at bestcommentaries.com, it is just another commentary set. If I was you, I'd upgrade and then take the rest of the money and either buy commentaries selectively (D.A. Carson argues strongly against sets and gives advice on NT commentaries in this resource: http://www.logos.com/product/5342/new-testament-commentary-survey-6th-ed ) or some cheaper sets (e.g. my personal wish list contains the Lenski NT commentary set, which should be quite heavy on NT Exegesis). Maybe there are even some additional resources that come into play for your studies and small group teaching, that you can aquire if you don't fork out all the money for the big NIC set.

If you're on Facebook, don't buy anything until you've checked Logos' Facebook page later today. They're about to post some deals they claim are truly amazing, and NIC*T is likely to be among them. Possibly some base packages as well.

@Nick, thanks for your advice. I am definitely leaning towards upgrading my base package now. You're completely right, even after I bought that and some other books, I'll still have some left for future books i might need. I only wish the NIC's were available individually.

@fgh Yes thanks, I did do so! I think now will be the best time to buy the Tyndale commentaries, awesome price.

But
things get tricky when you're trying to include replies to two
different people's posts in one post. The easiest and safest way to do it is click
Reply to reply to the first person's post, then type your answer after the ending "quote" directive. Then while still in edit mode in that first tab (be careful or you'll lose everything you've typed! -- I sometimes like to copy it first and paste in into Notepad or something, just to keep it safe in the meantime in case of an accident), open a new browser tab and navigate back to that thread you're replying to (in Facebook, all you need to do to do this is right-click on the link to the thread at the top of the page where you're in edit mode and select "Open link in new tab"). Then in the new tab, find the second person's post that you want to reply to, click Reply, select all the text from it (including the opening and closing "quote" directives), copy it and paste it back into your original tab where you're editing your reply.

Once you become a bit more adept with the quote syntax, you can copy and paste it all around to divide up your answer if you're replying to multiple separate points in the same person's post, for example, and want to separate out the bits of their post as you reply to them. Just be sure you always end up with properly matching open and closing "quote" directives, or the forum software will squawk at you when you try to post.

Thanks for your response, that made sense! Other forums I've been too had an easier method but now that I understand this one it's fairly simple too.

Thanks to everyone for your replies, I have decided to upgrade to Silver. Your input has definitely helped me along the way of making that decision.
