mailing price

It has been a long time since I have ordered a non-downloadable product. The facebook sale has lured me to purchase the manual (vol 1) for $14.97. I see it is on back order.

My question is whether it really is true that mailing the manual to a US address really costs $11.70? That seems to be the cheapest option. If this is really true, it is no deal for me.

Mark, mind you this ships from MP and not Logos I believe, the shipping price for two L4MAC manuals was $12. I'm not sure as to why its so high.

Have you tried shipping a package anywhere in the US lately from a
USPS outlet or a competitor? The prices are outrageous, especially since
the gas prices have been going up and affecting delivery costs. That
really is likely the cost of shipping a spiral bound 8
1/2" x 11" manual that weighs about 1 lb, 2 oz, if you count the cost of
packaging it for shipment. Amazon.com can get away with charging only $3.49 per book for shipping
because of the volume they do, and most of the books they ship are
smaller, lighter paperbacks so it all averages out. Plus they probably
get a special rate from the PO. MP does a small volume so they probably have to pay the same rate you or I would. The USPS charges $10.50 for priority mail for a small flat-rate box (which is the smallest size that would fix a MP manual), plus you have to factor in the cost of the box. MP probably chooses priority mail over express (more costly) since it isn't in a rush and the only cheaper options (parcel post and media mail) probably have restrictions that make them undesirable or unavailable.

Well to order this at half price will still cost $28. I was already not convinced I needed the manual. But for sure will not pay that much. The product should really be downloadable if the cost of shipping is so high today. I know this was a business decision by MP. I do not need to understand it. I have never seen the manual. But I am sure it can be produced so that shipping cost is minimal. It could even be sold at Amazon to get those shipping prices seen there. But I know MP has made a business decision. Just does not work for me.

UPS added fuel surcharges back when gasoline topped $4 per gallon. They neglected to drop them when gas went back down. They were too comfortable with their new budget and found themselves in trouble when gas prices rose again. It is difficult to explain a surcharge on a surcharge.

Still the USPS offers Media Mail that is s-l-o-w but cheap. That is not an option we are offered on the manual.

Speaking as a USPS employee... One of the most overlooked values is the Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelopes. We have businesses that send manuals, etc consistently and it is $4.95 a great value and an estimate of around 3 day delivery for the most part. It is a shame that some businesses one being a "reputable" Christian website has a deal with UPS and then over charges for our shipping as part of it... As for Media and Parcel Post they are slower delivery options so they are discounted but the manuals could go out via media.

Shipping costs are probably the most contentious item for anyone who sells over the Internet.

Depending on the item, there are multiple factors

Size and weight
Value
Packaging
Shipper Pickup/Or Bringing to Shipper
Time

I ship USPS three to four times every week mostly with Media Mail and First Class unless the item is expensive. The item(s) have to be carefully packed, properly addressed, weighed, brought to the Post Office, etc. Regardless of the item, it's usually about 15 minutes or more of my time for each one. I put postnet zip+4 addresses on everything. After everything, I notify of shipment. I'm real good about recycling shipping boxes, but I pay for envelopes and lots of packing tape. It adds up.

I'll just guess that all this adds up to $4 of time and materials per package that aren't stamped on what you receive.

I know people sound like they pad the cost of shipping to try and cover for this, but it is a real expense. It's either a higher stated shipping cost or it gets added to the product cost.

I ordered the manual but was taken aback by the shipping as well.

I think PDF or some kind of read only CD that could be shipped at a lower cost would be a good idea.

I like the paper manuals but we live in a world of LOGOS, eBooks, kindle, nook, ect. Seems silly not to to have a downloadable version.

HEY make a Kindle version for download. Make a version that loads into LOGOS. [:D]

I know I have said this before, but I would purchase the manuals for L4 if they could be downloaded. Even better, as others have suggested, make them compatible with Logos.

I ended up not ordering the manual even with a 50% discount. I just cannot and will not pay practically equal value to have it shipped in a day when that cost can be saved by having it available for download.
