question on Greek pronunciation tool

I currently have the Scholar's edition of Logos 4, and want to make better use of the Greek pronunciations. Currently, the only way I can find of having Logos pronounce a word is either opening up the pronunciation tool from the tools menu and manually hunting down the word I'm looking for (assuming it's in the list), or using the "word by word" function in the exegetical guide. I'd be fine with that latter approach since most of the time I'm looking for a pronunciation it's in relation to a textual search that would use the exegetical guide anyway. However, the pronunciation feature on the Word by Word section seems to only be for the Lemma of a word, not the actual word itself. Is there a way to switch this so I can get the pronunciation of the words that show up in my text? Alternatively, if I could get Logos to pronounce words directly from the Greek NT or LXX Bibles, that would accomplish the same result for me.

Chris, to be able to do this, you will need to buy the Greek Audio New Testament which is a separate add-on product. Then Logos will be able to read aloud when you open a Greek NT or LXX Bible and press Ctrl+R. The basic read aloud feature included in Logos 4 uses a computer-simulated voice (which comes with Windows) to read any English text, and it does not work with Greek, which is why you need to get the add-on product. The Greek Audio New Testament is actually a recorded human voice reading the Greek text with accurate pronunciations. The narrator (John D. Schwandt, Senior Fellow of Classical Languages at New St. Andrews College where he teaches Greek) uses the Erasmian Greek pronunciation scheme, which is the standard in most seminaries and Bible schools.

Rosie (or anyone who owns this resource),

the product page of Greek Audio New Testament says that it only works to its full extent with morphologically tagged resources such as some of the NA27 and UBS4 resources. Right now I have only the free, non-tagged SBL Greek NT and am contemplating to buy the Audio NT and a tagged resource.

Do you know whether the Audio NT will work (and if so: the "karaoke-indicator") with morphologically tagged Greek NTs not mentionend on its product page, such as Scrivener http://www.logos.com/product/4643/the-new-testament-in-greek or especially the Lexham Interlinear http://www.logos.com/product/8569/lexham-greek-english-interlinear-new-testament-collection ?

No, it does not work with those two. You get just the computer-simulated voice which sounds all garbled on Greek since it was meant for reading English only.

I believe the list of resources it works with that you find on the product description page is exhaustive, i.e., no other resources not listed will work with this feature.

The Lexham Interlinear was really getting interesting to me (and looks like a real deal for the money) , and as a beginning learner of Greek I might have persuaded myself to buy it along with the Audio NT.

But March Madness and Facebook Sale made me spent more on Logos resources as I intended, so maybe I'll have to wait till Christmas or so.

There are at least two easier ways to do this (though you'll still only get the lemma):

1) Keep the Information panel open, and click on the pronunciation icon:

Warning: the Info panel currently slows down the computer quite a bit, so if you don't have a very good one, you might want to avoid this until they've improved the performance.

2) Right-click on the word, choose Lemma, and then Pronounce:

WIth regard to the Greek Audio NT, I feel overwhelmed by all the various companion Greek NT Bibles that it suggests. How do I choose from among the list? Were they compiled using different Greek manuscripts and that's why we have so many? If so, which is considered more "reliable" in scholarship? Do one of the versions available contain the Codex Sinaiticus or Codex Vaticinus? Sorry for the questions, but I want to make sure I get what's right for me.

Hi RevChris,

as you said you own Scholar's, based on the Logos Comparison List most of these Greek ressources should already be in your package. I would expect each of them to have some introductory chapter to tell you about the manuscripts etc.

Therefore I currently look into buying a full-fledged UBS4, NA27 or even the SESB (which in Germany includes modern German-language translations as well as the NIV, but even the outdated versions of it don't fall to reasonable prices) - however I found that Libronix (Logos 3) is happily playing the Audio NT, has three speed settings and a blue karaoke cursor that tries to follow Prof. Schwandt through the free SBL Greek NT. I would recommend the readings at

http://www.helding.net/greeklatinaudio/greek/

which are in a more modern pronunciation though not quite the same as that of Randall Buth at http://www.biblicallanguagecenter.com/koine-greek-cana-galilee/ which is recognizable as Greek by modern Greeks whereas the Erasmian pronunciation is not. The Erasmian pronunciation does not conform to any recognizable form of Greek.
