Recommended Hebrew Lexicons

A low bow of salutary greetings,
We've heard opinions as to which Greek Lexicon is the best - would you kind brethren mind giving your recommendation as to which is the best or better of the Hebrew Lexicons offered thus far by Logos. One answer at at time please. Thanks!!!

Koehler-Baumgartner A Hebrew-Aramaic Lexicon is the current king of the hill. It has been able to take advantage of the more recent information in the field of Semitic studies such as the Ras Shamra finds. I'll violate your request for one answer and note that the venerable Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon is still quite useable though it has the deficiency of grouping words under its presumed root. That shouldn't be too much of a problem with Logos, however, since a click does the searching for you. As noted, it lacks the most recent finds, but that isn't quite as significant as with the pre-Oxyrhynchus Greek lexica.

Gee .... one answer at a time. It just doesn't seem fair. For daily use, I go to Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee. It's considerably older and thus does not benefit from the latest (for which I use ANOTHER lexicon). But Gesenius is quicker to glance through for the patterns, and ties into a lot of older resources I like including his OT hebrew translation. Although I have HALOT always open, I don't often go to it unless I'm having problems.

Okay, I waited a WHOLE hour. The resource I use, to include more modern research, is TLOT. I just love it to death. What a great piece of work. Put it on the wall an frame it, for goodness sakes!

I was being sarcastic in my so called request for "one answer at a time" - meaning, only one person at a time!!!???! :-}
As you know, on some forums, when one hurls out a question, that one might get a reply in a week by one individual. Obviously, that is not the case here at Logos. I'm impressed!!!
Seriously George & Denise, I appreciate your expertise & suggestions. If you've got any further advice, I'll be listening - or is that - watching and reading!!! :-)

Since I'm not familiar with Hebrew, here's my prioritized list:-
- DBL Hebrew (very accessible)
- Gesenius
- Abridged BDB (free and more accessible than the complete BDB)
- A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon

G'day Bootjack...HALOT has to be the preferred Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon for serious Hebrew study that I know of, yet I have to confess I still only have the print version, am yet to fork out the spondoolix for the L4 version...it is in the plans though for second half of this year [:D]
Without a good working knowledge of Hebrew I have found HALOT (in print) hard going though, but I'm sure with L4 and it's reverse interlinears I could get a lot more out of this resource.

When (not if) you get HALOT in Logos, I would suggest that you get the bundle with BDAG if you don't already have that.
BTW: I can tell by your accent that you must be Yugoslavian. Right ? G'day. [:D]

Usually when you get a whole slew of replies by different people in a short span of time (a couple of minutes), it's because it can take a few minutes to write up a response. When each person sets out to answer the question, nobody else has answered it yet, so they think they're the first one and are not jumping on someone else's toes. But by the time they finish the response and click "Post," two or three other people, who also had that same thought (gee, here's a question needing an answer and nobody has answered it yet, and I know the answer) have posted replies. If they all agree, roughly, that's a good sign you're getting good advice. If they differ, it's probably because there is more than one way to accomplish what you're trying to do.
Yeah, it's great that we have all these eager beavers on the Logos forums. [:)] I know of no other software forum where you can get an answer so quickly, and with such thoroughness.

Thank you folks for the furthered suggestions. Is-Mebin, I was just looking at the Halot and saw it bundled with BDAG - then George, you just rumbled in advising Is Mebin that very thing. Interesting!!!
Rosie, you are soooo correct - this place is alive!!! I've never been so impressed with a Bible program as Logos and the forum here is totally tremendous. I'm new to Logos as you probably remember, so I've got a lot of *greenhorn* questions coming down the pipes. Appreciate you folks all being here.

Thank you for the advice Mr Somsel...I have the Platinum package, so BDAG is contained in it...for me, I think I will invest in the Hebrew Bible Bundle which contains HALOT...once I've paid off my current payment plans (Jul/Aug)...lol! And yes sir, I concur...it is "WHEN" not "IF"!!![Y]

I'm not sure what to say about this one...I do live in a very multi-cultural society...lol...and no matter what Hoges has suggested, shrimps are very rarely on my Barbie, mate!

It's great to have you here. I love answering the *greenhorn* questions because they are so much easier to deal with than the "help me figure out why Logos crashed" ones... [;)] (Fortunately the latter are getting much, much rarer!)
BTW, I see you don't yet have an avatar. Perhaps you could find an appropriate one from among all the pictures of bootjacks on Google Images. [:)]

Sorry about the confusion with regards to George's response to Is Mebin. A quick glance and I thought George was talking to me being from Yugoslavia. Apologies. I edited that particular posting. I think I'm in need of a slight nap!!!

I would also like to remind everyone of the requests that have been made to get Clines' (Concise) Dictionary of Classical Hebrew in Logos. This dictionary also covers the non-Biblical material (e.g. Qumran):

I just saw that on sale at Facebook for $69.95 until the end of month. I wasn't considering it, but after those words I guess I have to. Though it seems to be on sale regularly, to maybe there's no hurry? Could you post an excerpt? Could someone else weigh in on its value?

Good reminder. I'll go and vote. Didn't see you name, though; are you pushing books you haven't voted for yourself? [:P]

In the lexicon section of wiki resource reviews, I included HALOT, TLOT and TWOT (will add more later). http://wiki.logos.com/Resource$3a_TLOT_(Theological_Lexicon_of_the_Old_Testament) has a screen shot and I used the same word for the HALOT screen shot for comparison. Agree TLOT will likely be discounted periodically.

Yes, NIDOTTE is great but I really love and use TWOT all the time, although I bought NIDOTTE some time ago.

Sorry we speak in code sometimes. It is the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis (you can see why we call it NIDOTTE).
Here it is: http://www.logos.com/product/5465/new-international-dictionary-of-old-testament-theology-and-exegesis

Logos has Hebrew Bible Bundle (54 vols.) for $ 974.95

For $$ more @ $ 2,389.95 is a bigger bundle => Scholar's Reference Bundle (140 vols.)
HALOT is part of Advanced Hebrew Supplement (11 vols.) for $ 259.95 (also includes Theological Lexicon of Old Testament)
and Original Languages Supplement (8 vols.) for $ 514.95
Advanced Hebrew Supplement is bit more affordable than Hebrew Bible Bundle.
Keep Smiling [:)]

With current economic situation, dreaming about Advanced Hebrew Supplement (11 vols.) for $ 259.95
Current Facebook fan special has Theological Lexicon of the Old Testament (3 vols.) for $ 69.95
Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (HALOT) (5 vols.) is $ 159.95 (by itself)
Other 3 Hebrew Grammars in Advanced Hebrew Supplement (11 vols.) add up to $ 115.90 (so supplement bundle is better deal)
For Jewish law and tradition, Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud Collection (50 vols.) pre-publication is $ 159.95 (with estimated ship date 28 Apr).
Personally planning to learn Hebrew using resources currently have, then hopefully add Advanced Hebrew Supplement (11 vols.) or upgrade to Portfolio in future (seem to remember base package upgrade specials in December past couple years).
Keep Smiling [:)]

Thank you again for your reply. Just talked to Logos and the Facebook special for the TLOT for 69.95 isn't. It's a *might be* in the future but not now according to them. One wonders why it would then be posted to Facebook for the supposed reduced price.

Well my good man, I do stand corrected. And so should the good folks at Logos. I was told explicitly that there were no specials, including TLOT through Facebook. Appreciate you putting me onto this. :-)

Maybe they are not allowed to tell people about Facebook specials over the phone because they are explicitly meant for Facebook fans only to discover, as a reward for them "liking" Logos and spreading the good word around.
