Grrr...Why did my "floating window" close?

nope Not normal. Just to be on the safe side are you sure it closed rather then became hidden? after going back to the home window what happens if you hit ALT+TAB?

FWIW I suspect Philip is right and the window is actually just "underneath" something else on your desk. If it isn't...

Please enable Logging (http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging) do it again and upload your logs (http://wiki.logos.com/Uploading_Logs) so we can take a look.

I suspect Philip is right, that your book merely moved behind the Logos main window and you need to ALT+TAB to bring it back to the front (that is, if you're running Windows; not sure what the Mac equivalent is). That's one of the features of a "floating" window. It's free-floating, not attached to the main window, so you can swap back and forth between them. If you're running Windows you can also click directly on a button in the taskbar at the bottom of your screen to get back to the floating window. It'll be slight different depending on which version of Windows your running. I believe Mac has something similar though I wouldn't know how to explain how to do it on the Mac.

You don't need to buy any instructional videos because there is a marvelous set of free "unofficial tutorial videos" done by Logos user/MVP Mark Barnes. Hmm. The Logs are not up to date.

Please open the program, perform the maneuver that kills your window → close Logos and then upload the Logos4.log file.

As I was reading a book in a "floating window" I came across something I wanted to look up so I went back to the "Home" page. As soon as I did, my "floating window" book closed. Is that normal?

Can you summarize some of your steps? How are you opening the floating panel? What do you do to get back to the home page? What are you doing to look up something else?

Chris has asked some really good basic questions. You don't happen to be using a "close all" button to get to the home page are you?

You don't need to go to the home page to open a search. CTRL+SHIFT+S will open a search window.

I'll find a book that I want to read (in this case it was the The Battle for the Resurrection by Geisler) and when the book opens up I right click on the tab and I "Open in a floating window Ctrl+F11". I'll click on this option and read what I need and when I want to grab a verse to add to my study notes or look up something like the Apostles' Creed (which is what started this whole mess) then I return to the "Home" page on my other Logos window. That is when my book closes. I can sit and watch it happen. The tab on the goes blank except for the blue "magnifying glass" logo and then the tab eventually closes (all of this happens rather quickly, much quicker than I can explain it).

To get back to the home page (usually I'll have a passage open - I'm using a non-traditional passage for the Sunrise Service this year - I Cor. 15:14-20) when I go to the original Logos window, I click on the little house in the upper left and type in what I want. When I hit "go" everything changes.

I always go back to the home page. I have a very good friend who just purchased Logos as well, and he also goes straight to the home page to look things up, so both of us are learning through trial and error.

I think this is your actual problem. hitting go once you type in a passage there, closes the existing layout (including floating books) and then rebuilds a study layout. It would be best to go to GUIDES → PASSAGE GUIDE to start a study instead - you get the report but it doesn't redraw your desktop. I can't explain what you're seeing with the floating window closing but I can guarantee that using the home page search box will close everything you have open. Try going direct to the passage guide route and let us know if the book is hidden or closed. We'll stick around and help. :-) As Rosie Perera states, "Learning Logos is an itterative process and you have to start somewhwere."

It's not normal, and I suspect it may have to do with how you're opening them. such as through the home page perhaps as mentioned above?

Normally the windows will just keep piling up if you're floating them, or if not your tabs will just accumulate till you close them.

If I understand you right, it isn't actually closing, just moving to the background. It's just the way Windows works - if your focus shifts to the main Logos window (which it will when opening a new resource) then the floating panel just moves back. Sort of like if you are holding two physical books and move one book in front of the other, the second book is still there, it's just "hidden" behind the first book. Alt-tab simply switches the active window (brings forward the book at the back).

As others have said, this is what causes your floating window to close.

Logos works with Layouts to open predefined resources/notes/info windows/etc. The Layouts button at the top right contains recent and saved layouts. When you open a layout, it closes all open resources (including your floating panel) and opens the ones defined by the layout. The Home page GO button is essentially a shortcut to a layout. When you click it, it closes any open resources and opens the resources specified by a layout.

Here are some tips that might help you out, and hopefully not confuse you.

Rather then typing your passage in the box with the "Go" beside it try typing it in the box that says"Command" next to the "Tools" tab. This will open your favorite bible to that location. Now say you are reading John 1:1 in your bible. RIGHT click in the Bible somewhere within that verse. A menu will pop up. Make sure "Reference" is selected on the RIGHT, then select Passage Guide on the LEFT.

If you are reading in a commentary and come to a reference you want to study start by hovering over the reference and pressing F7. That will show you your verse in several translations. Still want to study it furthur? RIGHT click on the reference, select Reference on the RIGHT, and then study your options on the left.

Either of the above ways will leave the book you are reading open.

If you do like going with that Go box, no problem. Once you are done studying your passage click on Layouts in the upper right corner. You'll see some screen shots. One of them, probably the second, is what you had open before clicking that GO button. click on it and it will take you back to your book....I think :-)

Actually let me clarify just a little:

As I am entering a passage into the "Home" search box it "autofills" so I'll click on what I want. I imagine that this is just like hitting the "go" button and does exactly what you are saying ("closes the existing layout and rebuilds a study layout"). I'm going to have to re-learn to go to the "Guides" tab instead of the "Home" tab. This is part of the learning curve...to learn how to use the additonal tabs.

I did what you suggested, and it did open up a new "Passage Guide", but let me ask this stupid question. I don't necessarily want the entire passage guide, I just want the passage! Can't I keep my virtual finger in I Cor 15 and then flip over to Luke 24 and look at the context and then flip back to I Cor 15? I appreciate the passage guide because you have provided me the tools to "dig deeper", but I guess I'm going about this all wrong.

Yes.

1. Type 1 Cor 15 in the command box (the box next to the "Tools" tab. Press enter

2. This will open a Pane with your favorite Bible to 1 Cor 15. In the upper left of that pane type Luke 24 and press enter.

3. To go back to 1 Cor click the itsy bitsy left arrow next to the "i" in the upper right of the Pane. This is your history button.

<EDIT> If you have a passage guide and want to read the passage, scroll to the top of the guide and left click on the reference. Its sorta a hidden feature we whined for when Logos 4 first came out :-)

This can indeed be done. (!) :-)

Assuming you have a bible open... (if not go ahead and open one).

Now you have two options at least.

Two bibles: Right click on the bible tab and choose open a copy in a new tab (or click CTRL+SHFT+N) use the second bible to navigate to Luke 24.
Flip back and forth: Open to 1 cor 15 → Type Luke 24 into the reference box and hit enter. → Now click the left arrow to return to your prior location (1Co 15).

Here is a little of what I could come up with.

I would have a book open like you see below:

and then would notice something that I want to look up. The top line mentions the Apostles' Creed, and since I want to add that to my sermon notes, I return to the Home page to search (now I know not to return to the Home page - thank you Philip):

and then the item I wanted to look for will open up but my book will close (the following in an example, not actually what I was searching for):

Bottom line: today I learned that by going to the Home page I am starting a whole new study and closing any existing studies (including books opened in floating windows as part of that study).

(Repeat after me) I promise, as of this moment, to learn from the Logos staff and forum contributors and to listen to their advice about how better to conduct the searches I need to make. Amen.
