Tip: Navigation to Next Search Result

After migrating to L4, I'd mostly forgotten about navigating to next Search result, a capability I used a lot in L3. As a result, I stumbled around trying to navigate from the search results panel to the resource that's the target of the search hit.

Recently, I stumbled across the setting in L4 that allows pushbutton access to the next Search Result. And then in a Bible study (in front of the class), I tried to find the pushbuttons, & to my chagrin I wasn't able to find them!

Today, I found out what I did wrong & now can always find the "Next Search Result" buttons, now. Here's how, in case you've been wondering:

  • Perform your search...
  • Try to find the button for next Search Result , as below, using the dropdown arrow beside the Article box. (This is the step where I concluded I'd lost the buttons, above.)

  • Now click on any of the highlighted search results in the Search Result Panel, as shown below:

  • And now go back & look at the same dropdown list. Notice that there's a new option: Search Result, as below.
Until you search again (at which point you will probably have to repeat this process), you can browse Next or Previous Search Result by pushing the Up or Down arrow.

Here's hoping you're able to find 'em whenever you need 'em, now.

Blessings,

Bill

Grace & Peace,
Bill

Good tip!  The essence of it is, if you are wanting to get the next search result you need to have the same translation open as you did your search in.  You can insure that by clicking on the search result, which is a link to the appropriate translation.  In your case it led you astray (in public none the less) because the translations were different versions of NIV.

True, but I did have the correct version of NIV open (my top priority version). It turns out that if you click 1st on the Scripture reference in the Search Results panel instead of a highlighted search result to the right of the Scripture reference, it does open the correct version but doesn't unhide the option to navigate by Search Result.

You had your top priority version open, which was NIV 1984. But it looks like you were restricting the search to NIV (which is NIV 2011, not the same as NIV 1984). So there would be no highlighted search results from that search in your open Bible version. When you clicked on the highlighted search result, it opened the NIV (see in your second screenshot, there's a new tab open now). And thus the Search Result option shows up in the dropdown. But if you clicked back on the NIV 84 tab, that option would no longer be available.

The reason it seems to matter whether you click on the Scripture reference or the highlighted search result is kind of round-about: it's because clicking on the highlight brings up the actual version that you restricted your search to, whereas clicking on the Scripture reference brings up your preferred Bible. I suppose this is a bit counter-intuitive and might not be by design (or if it is, it might not be the best design).

Thanks a lot, Bill - I was not aware this function existed at all, this is very helpful.
