please help me use my dictionary more effectively

I'm hoping a couple or more people can help me use my favorite dictionary more effectively. It's the New Interpreter's Dictionary (5 vol) that I have in print on my bookshelf, but it keeps collecting dust because I'm not good at identifying topics in a passage and then pulling the heavy books off my shelf and opening them up. Logos makes this process much easier and more effective as it offers me suggested topics for a passage and then lets me easily open up the dictionary to that topic. However, this dictionary of mine is still in pre-pub on Logos and needs a few more people to request it before it goes into production. So, please help me out and sign up using the link below!

Rev Chris,
I would love to help you out but I have two big issues with this set. First, I quote "A diverse group of 900 scholars from 40 countries" that to me says inconsistency. I don't mind, and actually need and use, resources from a different theological position than mine but this quote screams that I can't be sure what perspective I will get from one article to the next. More importantly $400 for a 5 volume dictionary? I think I have enough dictionaries with all the one-volume, the ISBE and the "Black" IVP dictionaries. Would love to help a brother out but I see no way I can.
I can think of many other resources I can spend $400 on, I am not trying to discourage you but just to make you think about how you distribute your resources.

Well, as someone who has a print copy I can verify how valuable this dictionary is. The scholarship is great and the fact that it is in 5-volumes speaks to the amount of commentary available for each topic. It is very comprehensive and definitely worth $400 IMO. Of course, I'll be able to sell my print copy to help pay for it once it's available.

Rev Chris, have you ever used the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary? It might be a quick answer to your problem. It is a little bigger and it may be a little more well known, but a lot of folks love it and you can order it right now for less money. Many people consider it top of the line when it comes to scholarship. http://www.logos.com/product/1660/anchor-yale-bible-dictionary
You could always give it a try and if you don't like it get a refund with in 30 days, the nice thing is you could run comparisions with the dictionary you have.

Thanks - I will keep that in mind. What's disappointing is that since creating this thread, the number of people signed up for this pre-pub has actually decreased! Don't know what that's about, but this will be the last time I try to build support for a pre-pub on the forums.

Rev Chris, I simply say don't let that bother you, there is no way to know why it went down. To be honest with you I have heard of the dictionary you are talking about but have never seen it, but the one I mentioned is cheaper, larger, more well known and considered by many to be one of the most scholarly dictionaries that appeals to all sides of theological issues.
I am a "conservative" working on my THD, but I have a lot of "non-conservative" friends that love the AYBD.
Getting back to the boards, I have seen many people push great books, only to have them sit there and do nothing. In this economy the 400.00 price tag could be a large part of the problem, plus the fact of the AYBD being already on the market at a much lower price.
I am glad you brought the dictionary up, even though I am not in the market for it! I just looked this dictionary up on line, you may want to check out some of the reviews on Amazon, this newest dictionary has very little in common with the older one, and it is considered much more liberal than the old one or the AYBD, it is also not considered to be as deep as the AYBD. This may or may not be new information to you depending on if you had the old copy of the dictionary or latest one.
God bless!

Rev Chris,
Am not sure how you can ascertain that the number of people actually decreased .................
However, for the record, your post encouraged me to sign up; and so I did! *smile*

Great thanks Milford! I noticed it decreased because the "gathering interest" bar went from orange to red. I see it's still on red, so I'm guessing it will update tomorrow when the great staff at Logos comes back to work.
