Bug: Commentaries section of the passage guide shows resources without content.

Steps:

1. Ran a custom passage guide on Romans 11

2. Opened the commentaries element that only has my versified commentaries focused on backgrounds.

3. Clicked on the New Manners and Customs of the Bible resource.

4. It opened but it has no content covering Romans 11.

Why did the internal search call for this resource?  Below is a screen shot and the resource support information.

In this situation PG (and Parallel Resource sets) will always go to the passage that is before the desired one eg for Ro 8:17 it will also go to 8:15. This is why I decided to tag this resource so that it will not appear in my Commentary collections!

Is it just this resource or does this happen for all versified resources where there is a gap in the content? (What is the system design?)

At this point I still think this is a bug. Why take us to a resource that clearly does not have that for which we asked? It simply wastes our time. The book clearly belongs to get tagged with other versified resources since it has a Bible index. If I omit it from this tag then I will not be using the book for its intended design purpose.

So I feel that it is either a bug in the index for the resource. Or a design bug that produces false positives on certain searches? (Maybe the resource is included if the content gap is in the middle of the resource. Is that a good reason? The requested content is still missing.)

Below is an example of where I feel that the commentary section of a guide is working correctly.

That occurs for all similar versified resources. If you request Ro 11:12 PG will go to Ro 11:11 if there is no article for v12 eg. Word Pictures in the NT. The same behaviour occurs if you type the reference in the Find box of the resource. So this is the design.

Some resources that Logos tag with type:Commentary are not commentaries  eg. New Manners and Customs of the Bible, and others that have been entered here. This is a subjective issue, but the category needs to be as meaningful as possible eg. is a "Study Bible" a Bible Commentary or Bible Notes (type:Notes)? Until Logos change their metadata I will tag resources (eg type:Notes) so that they will be regarded as Commentaries, or disregarded, for my collections. By looking at their content I have tagged 21 "Commentaries" as mytag:Notes so that they do not waste my time eg. they do not cover sufficient bible passages or provide comment at, or across, chapters rather than verses.

Comparing Cited By tool with Passage Guide, noticed Cited By lists resources (in a collection) that intersects reference (without crossing chapter boundaries).

In contrast, appears Passage Guide lists commentaries whose bible index range includes reference (may or may not have specific passage), much quicker to show resource list than Cited By.

Cited By serves a different purpose as it will show all occurrences of a passage in any resource. PG Commentaries section looks only for indexed bible references which usually serve as article headers in bible commentaries or bible notes.

This inaccuracy is the result of some modifications made six months or so ago that were designed to speed up parallel resources and the Passage Guide. Instead of checking that the passage in question is definitely in the resource, Logos now makes an educated guess. As you see, it very occasionally gets it wrong, but I guess the speed increase compensates for that.

I still think this is a bug

I agree,  In this case, L4 is returning inaccurate (wrong) data.  While speed is an issue with L4, you do not correct that problem by providing the user with bad data.

I agree that this shouldn't be considered as a final solution to the speed problem, more a workaround for the time being. I still hold out hope that the underlying problem (separate reference indexes for each resource) will one day be dealt with.

    Ah, that explains it!

I sympathize with the speed issue. I have slower machines (but a new Lenovo W520 i7 on the way).I also work with students who use and love Logos but can not afford speedy machines.

However, I will take accuracy over speed almost any time, Personally I seldom use the PRS icon. Its use of the same frame frustrates my way of working. I tend to jump back and forth between resources and work with them side-by-side.

Maybe we need something like an option in Settings or someplace else that offers a choice between speed and accuracy/precision.
