Tip: closing multiple windows

This tip is probably old news for some but if not, is really handy to know. It pertains to the right click commands that appear when clicking off a tab (for instance: "open all in a floating window" or "close all tabs"). It is useful to know that this applies only to the windows that are tabbed together and NOT to all opened windows in L4.

In the picture above, I clicked on multiple links in the guide on the left, resulting in opening all the resources on the right (with the red frame). Right clicking on these tabs and choosing close all tabs only close those on the right and leaves the guide and note file on the left open. This applies to floating windows also.

Again, I know this will be old news to the L4 gurus out there but if a daily user like me can have discovered it only today, I suppose there must be others who would benefit in knowing. This is really useful whenever one is looking up a series of hits from a window from one side (search results, guides, etc) and saves time to close all the result windows in a hurry.

Thanks for the reminder, Francis!            *smile*

Actually, I used to do that ....    but, for some strange reason, I went back to clicking that teeny-tiny little "x" in the uppermost right corner which is a bit of a nuisance .....

.............much easier to use the right click of the mouse!

    Peace to you!                                        and .........

A suggestion: if you type CLOSE ALL in the command line, give it a moment to populate a drop-down menu, then drag the CLOSE ALL from the drop-down menu to a blank area just to the right of the command line window on the tool bar you will have a permanent shortcut for this action. Then right click the icon that you just formed to see other icons that you may wish to exchange for this one.

If they open in another pane with tabs that are part of your Layout there is no way to keep those tabs from closing with Close All tabs. Further, the pane is removed from the Layout! So I just close them one at a time.

If I want to close all but a couple of the tabs in a pane quickly, I float or otherwise move the couple that I want to keep open and then use Close All tabs to get rid of the rest. It's often quicker than closing all the ones I want to close with their X's if I've got dozens of tabs open, which is a state I find it quite easy to get myself into.

I often think it would be nice to have a "close all tabs to the right" option on the tab right-click menu in the same way as you have in some browsers.

    Now that would be useful!

[Y] Brilliant! I'd never seen that on browsers, but it's exactly what we need.

Now, if I'd REALLY read what the OP actually said my previous post would have been unnecessary[:$]. I attempted the exercise and it worked just great!

So, musing here: I've two panes, not like Francis' example with the guide. In the left pane there are 7 (or more) tabs; in the right pane there are 4 (or more) tabs. If I have completed an action and no longer need those in the right pane, I can right click on the first tab in the right pane where it tells me "close other tabs." It does close all in the right pane except for the first tab. Hmmmmm....

This causes me to think that Graham's suggestion of closing all tabs to the right (or left) is indeed a valid suggestion. Or would I be "limited" to Francis' original idea in order to close multiple tabs that are no longer needed for a project simply because there are multiple panes?

Is there a means of closing a multi-tabbed pane but not affecting the other pane? Or is that the whole point of this thread?

    Hi Charley

Is there a means of closing a multi-tabbed pane but not affecting the other pane?

You can do this by selecting the "Close all tabs" option

Yes... I hesitated because I assumed it meant "ALL" tabs rather than "all" tabs and didn't want to lose the other pane as I'd not saved them. Nifty....

    thanX!!
