Is the IVP Dictionary up on the Anchor Bible Dictionary

I have the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary. Should I buy the IVP Dictionary or do we simply begin to overlap and have too much of the good thing? Is one actually better than the other?

I own both, and my academic background and research/teaching interests tend to align more with the AYBD. However, I find that sometimes the IVP Dictionaries anticipate and address questions that the AYBD does not. I'm glad to have them both. (AYBD was my first Logos product, back in 2003.)

I don't have the IVP. I do greatly appreciate the AYBD, but occasionally I can't find something I'm looking for (frequently something quite simple). In such cases I've found that even something like Easton's can be helpful. I guess that when they spread the grass seed they missed a spot or two.

Likewise, I have both. I don't consider the IVP Dictionaries less academic in any sense. They don't attempt to be exhaustive in the way that Anchor is (for people/places at least), and reflect more of an evangelical position. (Though that's certainly not to say that non-evangelical won't benefit from it, nor that evangelicals won't benefit from Anchor.)

The NT IVP Dictionaries are more theological than Anchor, though this doesn't apply to the OT. Personally, I rate the IVP Dictionaries 5/5 for the NT volumes, and 4/5 for the OT volumes. Anchor I'd also give 5/5. If you already have Anchor I wouldn't see the OT Dictionaries as a 'must have', but even with excellent volumes it can often be helpful to have another perspective, and IVP will give you that.

Personally, yes. I think the IVP NT Dictionaries are a 'must-have', and give you a lot that you don't get in Anchor.

I agree, I have all the available IVP Dictionaries that are available in Logos and find them valuable to me.
