Minimal Upgrade Package?

I am somewhat confused. Logos 4.0 engine itself is free so what is the benefit of the minimal package upgrade? If the resources that come with it are not of interest then is there any reason to spend the $65 for it? Will the engine itself lack anything that comes with the minimal package?

I would go to the horse's mouth on this one: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/3223/24523.aspx#24523
How much it can do without the "controlled vocabulary" I do not know. Logos lets you try this for free, even if they do encourage you to buy more resources. If you are not satisfied with just the engine upgrade because it can't do what you want, then you are free to continue using version 3 or purchase one of the packages for version 4 to make it do the fancy stuff. It really is your choice.
By the way, the free link is: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/Logos4Setup.exe

You will be able to read and search your existing books, run a basic Passage Guide, etc. You won't have access to any of the features pictured on http://www.logos.com/logos4/visualize (or on many of the other Logos 4 pages), as these depend on brand-new data sets included in the LE collections and the minimal crossgrade.
Edit: Some of the Passage Analysis features shown on the "visualize" page may work (when just downloading the software and not purchasing an upgrade) depending on the LDLS3 collection you already have.

There are some things that are really great in Logos4 you would miss. Infographics, for example. Many other, like new maps and so on. It is definitely worth of getting the minimal crossgrade.

Obviously, if you're not interested in what you're being asked to buy, don't buy it.
Have you considered upgrading your package? You are almost guaranteed to get a great deal on something you want. For me the Gold to Platinum jump is well worth the price for only one of the sets I would be getting, but there are at least 2 sets that I'd like to get. Having gone through the jump from 1.x to 2, and 2.x to 3, I can assure you that today's upgrade deals are, without a doubt, the best I've ever seen.
Maybe there should be a 'what you're missing' page for those who are contemplating not upgrading their boxed sets from the L3 set to the L4. So far, I'm not aware of such a comprehensive list.

Richard, I think going to the Compare list in the upgrade page of Logos.com shows all the new stuff very well. That was the first thing I went to see [:)]

Yes, but it doesn't tell us what we'd not, get if we only upgraded the engine. There's no question in my mind that either the crossgrade, or the upgrade are worth it. But the poster above wants to determine himself if that's what he wants to do. I think it's a legitimate question.
EDIT: Posted without reading Brad's response (I should remember to always never do that.). Thanks Brad.

I'm all excited about the new Logos 4 and the titanium package enticed me. As a seminary student, right now I cannot afford to pay that price tag. The price for the minimal upgrade is reasonable at this junction.
My question is if I purchase the minimal upgrade now, and upgrade it to the titanium package in the future, will I receive any discount for what I owned in this minimal upgrade?

In response to Robin's question:
I called them today and ask them the same question and the answer is "no." The discounts you see are incentives for you to upgrade your package when you go to version 4. I am wanting to purchase the discounted Word Biblical Commentary this week and can't make two $400 purchases at once, which really bums me out. I'm itching for version 4, so I'm eating a loss so I can try out version 4 right now...

Actually the answer is "Yes" and "No."
First the "Yes:" When you upgrade, it's considered an upgrade, so the upgrade price reflects that. You don't have to repurchase anything.
Now the "No:" These are introductory prices, they are tremendous bargains, and they won't last long.
BTW, it's Platinum, not Titanium.
If you're a sem student, you have some discounts the rest of us don't. If you're not sure what those are, talk to someone at Logos sales. Also, Christmas is just around the corner. If you let your friends, relatives, fellow church members know about this opportunity, you may just find some folks eager to help you in your studies. Asking is humbling, but last I checked humility was a good thing.
EDIT: when I said "upgrade" above, I'm assuming you already own a standard Logos collection.

Robin, may be they will create special Collection for you called Titanium [:)] But seriously, call Logos and ask for the academic sales. If you are a student, you should have a special price.

..Last time this rolled around I was under the impression there were no special prices for the upgrade that were less than the automated calculator... (V2-V3).
My V2-V3 upgrade was far cheaper than I'd consider fair, infact it was an increadibly unexpected blessing, still, in these economic times, it'd be nice to know about any other potiential discounts. If the academic rate is some kind of flat % this time around I'd love to hear from someone the rates for Full-Time students.

Jonathan:
I don't know the percentage (i'm not in sales), but there is definitely an academic discount for the upgrade price. If you can't find it on the web, or you're not sure if the calculator is showing you the discounted price, you should follow Bohuslav's advice and call academic sales.
