Are these guys nuts?
I still follow the tech world since I probably have some silicon in my bloodstream from working in IT. It's well known that the next generation of almost anything is probably well underway even before the release of its predecessor. So why do these guys want to trumpet the unavailable stuff when they've got truckloads of the current new ones to sell. Intel just released Sandy Bridge i Series Processors and they are drumming for Ivy Bridge which is a year away. Ballmer is talking up Windows 8 when sales of Windows 7 is relatively flat.
I think they are out of their minds unless they are merely trying to keep investors happy enough to think they have a future. To me, it's another excuse to wait for a price drop unless there's something really viable in the next money bleeding edge.
Maybe there's something I'm missing.

Good Point! Maybe thats why MSFT back peddled quick on WIN8 coming out next year.

Much of the time the "trumpeting" you hear isn't (at least IMHO from many years in IT, which are still ongoing) so much to pump up the interests of users and investors as much as it is to get software developers and manufacturers on board now. For products like Intel CPUs and Windows to be successful at launch, manufacturers and software developers have to get on board with the future at least 12-18 months before one of these prodcuts launches.

Randal makes a good point. The only thing is that much of this so rarely comes at launch time. I don't see all that much software that really exploits either the CPUs or even the 64bit OS capabilities. There's much more that seems beholden to legacy users than what moves forward.

I'm not sure what the requirements are to make something 64 bit ( it used to be just newer development tools), but a lot of it will undoubtedly make the majority of computer users mad since the software probably won't run on their older machines. Functionally the software would allow greater computational ability and use the multiple cores of the newer CPUs.

Would love to see a 64 bit version of Logos. Guess that is a ways off.

I'm sure they are thinking of 64 bit, but I am also convinced they are not going to do the year ahead crowing of Microsoft and Intel. Logos 5 would probably be more than a couple of years from now. FWIW, if they rev up L4 as anticipated, we'll probably be in fine shape when it happens.

I know it is a growing frustration with me at the speed that
the next generation of a product is made public. Windows 8, next generation of MS
Office, Ivy Bridge, MacBook Pro, and they are even talking about IPad 3 coming

I think Intel is working hard to crush AMD. Notice the CPUs
